I think that Lucretia didn’t realize just what she had done to her friends until she met them again. Davenport was different, she knew and kept him with her as a reminder of the seriousness of her task, but it wasn’t until she brought in the others—the ones who were supposed to have been safe and happy and well the whole time—that she understood.

Because Merle, the moral core of their group who had laid his life on the line time and again in the name of knowledge and peace, was now a fuck-up who had walked out on his children. The cleric who had mastered an ancient magic and used it well now struggled with the simplest spells. The dwarf who had been so very kind to her, the first to reach out and get to know her, was cruel to a child and careless with new acquaintances.

Taako was still confident, of course, but it had a sharpness to it that alarmed her. The deep foundational love that had supported him all his life was gone, and so he had filled the void with pride and selfishness. His laughter was all for himself now, because every time he turned instinctively to share it with someone, that someone was gone, and he didn’t even know it, but Lucretia could see that it still hurt.

And it must have been worst of all to look at Magnus. The man who had learned the true meaning of strength and had made it his mission to preserve life, now hurled himself into danger at every opportunity, reckless and even joyful at the thought of death. Having no idea of the true value of his long, heroic life, he stood in the nothingness that was left to him and cheerfully waited for a battle he could die in.

She saw them, how they had changed, and she understood with horror. Magnus had lost his hope. Taako had lost his heart. Merle had lost his soul. And it was all her fault.
