What I say: I’m fine.
What I am thinking: How come Victor Frankenstein is always played by older people? One of the main points of Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus is to show that Victor was a young college kid who made huge mistakes that came to bite him in the end. If he isn’t played by someone in their early twenties, it loses that point entirely. He can’t be a young idiot who makes bad choices if he isn’t played by a *young* person.

I can't stress enough how much I miss StumbleUpon
StumbleUpon once sent me to a supercut of Lion King, Lion King 1 1/2, and Lion King II, the main edit being that the scenes of Lion King and Lion King 1 1/2 were interspersed so that they happened in the order they actually happened.
stumbleupon not existing anymore can be directly traced to a dramatic decline in my mental health, I could do a thesis on it.
bestie stumbleupon very much still exists its just called cloudhiker now. i use it all the time.
mini compilation of suggestions from the replies:
The Bored Button - "Press the Bored Button and be bored no more."
The Useless Web
Cloudhiker - "Discover the most interesting, weird and awesome websites of the Internet" (not really a rebrand, it's a different person running it but they have the same intention in mind)
Astronaut.io - "These videos come from YouTube. They were uploaded in the last week and have titles like DSC 1234 and IMG 4321. They have almost zero previous views. They are unnamed, unedited, and unseen (by anyone but you)."
Marginalia - "This is an independent DIY search engine that focuses on non-commercial content, and attempts to show you sites you perhaps weren't aware of in favor of the sort of sites you probably already knew existed."

The common Archangel.
Humans from the neighboring villages pay tribute to the newly born Cherubs in the form of rye bread and simple cornmeals.
Cherubs stay in their infant stage for over 50 years and need constant attention before reaching adulthood. Their songs are said to be beautiful and differ for each listener.
Angels huddle with their brood under a halo nest adorned with the branches of the most sacred cemetery trees.
Brood parasitism occurs amongst different angel species, particularly from the Genus Bypochtbonia. The angel will snatch the cherub and replace it with a near identical offspring. The angel parents will then raise the parasite baby, unaware of the exchange.
Cherub parasites give out an incessant wail known as the ‘song of flesh,’ persistently demanding human souls to feed upon. Their fits of hunger are insatiable and the angel parents have no choice but to accommodate the parasite to the point of bursting.
Once the stomach lining of the cherub infant bursts, it leaves the nest to hunt for more human souls. Over time, a new intestinal system grows, along with a feathered wingspan to help it glide short distances.
Archangels build large circular structures embedded with reflective glasses and crystals to ward off predators from their territory.
Most ‘ophanim arcs’ are built meticulously from dead trees and woven with vines. The arcs cause a feeling of unease in most life forms.
I am obsessed with this and keep coming back to it, one of my favourite concepts ever. David’s brain should be protected at all costs
I do often think about how the origin of “he would not fucking say that” was in reference to a post which depicted Cartman SouthPark responding politely when asked for his pronouns
meme phrases are so mobile and versatile and that's really really beautiful but i'm always thinking about the first "she x on my y til i z" being "she ebbin on my neezer til i scrooge" and the first "fork found in kitchen" coming from a tweet about sehun from exo being spotted at a gay bar. like sometimes you just utterly nail it the very first time and no variation of the joke is going to be better.
EXACTLY.

I think victors unrealiablity as a narrator is strongest in the rose coloured glasses he views his family, and its strange even among people who agree hes unrealiable as a narrator his descriptions of them as this idealistic loving and supportive family are often taken uncritically to heart. Ive seen numerous people just in the past few days, and even in the interview for That new frankenstein movie( who ironically,is tackling the cycle of familial turmoil itself but doesnt seem to recognize that theme in the book) parallel Victors family to his dynamic with the creature, and hes made out to be unique in breaking the trend of benevolence nurturing he was raised under .
Taking a more critical lense to his descriptions of his family, though,it becomes to me pretty glaring the ongoing unhealthy flaws of his family that have either simply become normalized to Victor for his entire life or are omitted from the narrativr due to his grief stricken state. I also think this plays into how people view Elizabeth and Victors dynamic, that shelley was conveying this uncritically somehow and dismissed as a simply 'normal for the times' thing for her to put in (even though she had to make changes from 1818 to 1831 because of the backlash).
I think most glaringly the observation i think the Most about is the painting on the mantle, whos addition is so strange and jarring it feels almost on the nose on how much it breaks Victors narrative of this purely idealistic family he had
“It was an historical subject, painted at my father's desire, and represented Caroline Beaufort in an agony of despair, kneeling by the coffin of her dead father. Her garb was rustic, and her cheek pale; but there was an air of dignity and beauty, that hardly permitted the sentiment of pity.”
We know right off the bat from Victors introduction this is how his parents met,Alphonse, Beauforts close friend, swoops in and 'saves' Caroline who is left stranded by her fathers death, right by his final resting place. In this moment of mourning we see the same sort of distortions of perfection Victor relays onto his family exhibited in the painting. Seeing such a tragic moment preserved by Alphonse in such a strange way ,especially given what we know that happened in that moment, clearly tells that there is something very strongly amiss about the family then beyond the surface. I feel personally that the painting itself directly reflects the circumstances leading to Elizabeth and Victors arranged marriage . Elizabeth is made to follow in Caroline's footsteps in any way she can throughout her life the moment she is taken in,and on the deathbed of Caroline, just like how Caroline was 'saved' at the tomb of Beaufort,Caroline ensures that Elizabeth is 'saved ' by the marriage to Victor by making her final request their union.
Going back a few chapters,I think about the dream in Ingloslaght, where Victor moves in to embrace Elizabeth only to find her morphing into their mother's rotting corpse . To me,an embodiment of how he is pressured to follow in the path of her dying wish. I think I could dig into this further, and how Caroline (and possibly the pressure he feels trapped under her dying wish) relates to Victors obsession w death and his subsequent creation of the creature, but i feel like its a tangent that id get too far on here. Also my braincells right now aren't all together for it.lol.
Beyond the cycles we see in Alphonse and Caroline's marriagr with Elizabeth and Victors arranged marriage ,is the repression of emotions and the set up of Victor and Elizabeth as pillars of support for the family. We see this with how Elizabeth is constantly made to take on the roles of Caroline, especially after her death ,and in Victors case we see how Alphonse deals with his emotions of grief. Most evidently with him making him repress the grief with Justine and William so that he could act as support . (Extra note,I was unsure if im grasping straws here but I feel like this cycle of emotional repression is sort? Of exhibited with victor and ernest, also directly after the introduction of the painting ironically. Ernest comes in distraught and is immediately told to get it together so that Victor could not be miserable as soon as he arrives, but again,I feel like this might be a reach .Just something of note tho)
I feel to an extent, that this emotional repression hes raised to live under is likely a factor in his trends of isolating himself in his guilt and grief, and also plays into the afformentioned 'creature as a product of victors unprocessed grief of caroline'
Idk how to end this and i could expand on this more as I get thru my reread .aogh. but something ive been thinking abt w the growing trend of 'victor defying the nurturing he grew up with by failing to embody that w the creature. ' thing. Buh.
Absolutely agree. I also think Victor actively is emotionally neglected while being pressured into continuing the family legacy by going to school, becoming successful and marrying Elizabeth to have children to keep the cycle going. He's terrified of failure. Terrified to read as anything less than worthy. He never brings up his true interests to his father after the first rejection, instead becoming more private. The Being in many ways is a physical embodiment of the expectations thrust upon Victor, that he's built up to be something incredible and beautiful but instead is imposing, terrifying and "hideous". The Being is of course also much of an extension of Victor while also being his own entity; he is Victors fear of not being a good future parent. So he elects to run from said responsibility and expectations and parenthood.
Victor deeply cares for Elizabeth but she is his friend, his sister, who he loves but he has not been taught the difference between platonic and romantic feelings especially towards those who he's expected to feel romantically towards. He assures his father of his love for Elizabeth but he's also basically been told since childhood he was going to marry her. It's expected and its the one thing he can follow through on. Elizabeth doesn't have much of a choice either and she likely considers it a better fate to marry her childhood friend then refuse and be booted out. They're doing what is expected of them.
I have heard people saying Victor is an entitled, narcissistic brat but that's if you're being uncharitable while ignoring the fact he's an unreliable narrator. He is talking about the dead. He is viewing his family through what he misses most about them. The fact he can hardly bring up many good memories of say his father, but brings up multitudes of Henry who seems to be one of the only people who really cares for him says something. The fact he speaks on Elizabeth very kindly and fondly but in the way you speak of family says something.
I think Victors obsession with death is also an obsession with escape. Death is an escape. He has been obsessed with morbid topics most of his life. It is an outlet to process things, to understand things. Death is a very final thing. In a sense I think theres a sort of messaging to what could be passive suicidal ideation. Thats a much looser theory ofc.
Anywho. I think he experienced significant emotional neglect and was a product of that. Just because some needs are met, like physical needs, doesn't mean the emotional and mental needs have been met. His lack of emotional stability directly ties into his emotional immaturity and emotional neglect. He is repeating the same exact cycle his family has set up. Whether it had been through the being or through marrying Elizabeth. I think people are so used to straight relationships and using the word love towards someone of the opposite sex to always mean romantic/sexual love that they can't fathom that platonic love, especially close platonic love can be hard to differentiate with romantic/sexual love. Especially when someone is comphet, which Victor likely was because of the expectations placed upon him.

100% agree. Though even people who actually read the books don't fathom how young he is. With the description, I've always viewed him in a manic/psychosis when making the creature. People don't pick up on that either. They don't pick up on how little emotional intelligence he has considering he was generally blown off and forced to be emotionally independent as a child. His age is possibly one of the most important parts of Frankenstein. That and his unmistakable humanity throughout it all.
He was a teenager who could not cope with parenthood. That isn't unique, that's human.

I know this is going to make me sound pretensions but I have to get it off my chest. I feel an unimaginable rage when someone posts a photo and is like "this picture looks like a renaissance painting lol" when the photo clearly has the lighting, colors and composition of a baroque or romantic painting. There are differences in these styles and those differences are important and labeling every "classical" looking painting as renaissance is annoying and upsetting to me. And anytime I come across one of those posts I have to put down my phone and go take a walk because they make me so mad
In case you're curious here's what I mean.
Renaissance(distinct lines, stability and the individual man):
Baroque (bold, chaotic, dramatic):
Romantic(romanticize the simple hard working life):
Do you see the difference?
this post has re-wired my brain in the best way
Hi im being insane about chainsaw man again
There really is a lot of intention behind what each character says, especially the ones who don't get much screen time. Himeno is a decent example of this but a better example is Katana Man
What he says isn't just for laughs or a throw away line. He specifically expresses he believes Denji murdered his grandfather, likely not realizing how horrible his grandfather was. He specifically expresses in part two that he believes the Yakuza are actually the "real heros helping people behind the scenes". He believes there's nothing wrong with the yakuza, nothing wrong with owning a brothel, nothing wrong with sending a teen boy there. He is still bitter about being tied up and humiliated, to the point he HUNTS DOWN DENJIS MISSING BALL to be sure he experiences the full range of pain he did.
And I don't think it's realized what a huge impact Denji has had on Katana mans life. He lost his grandfather, he got humiliated and arrested, hes forced to work for the experimental public safety division, which as we know, the special devision strips you of so much autonomy. Hes likely kept on a tight leash similar to how power was. Hes a grown man who's given constant supervision outside of the bathroom and bedroom. That's it. They're looking over his shoulder when hes dealing with whatever businesses have been left to him, whatever money hes got, when hes reading the morning paper, making coffee.
It's also likely about his pride and feeling emasculated by getting his ass kicked by a teenager. A teenager who DOESN'T KNOW HIS NAME. Doesn't even care to learn it. Still doesn't ask, doesn't care, because hes made such a minimal impact he doesn't even remember him. I mean, thats a bruise to the ego. He's been stripped of a lot of things (I mean he can lose the clothing again imo) but he's consistently stripped of identity outside of "Katana Man" much like Denji is stripped of his identity outside of "Chainsaw Man".
Sideburns, Samurai, Katana, Yakuza, none of that is his name. He is still nameless outside of those things. That's probably to show just how little the person katana man is without the transformation has affected denji. Yet his world has been flipped completely upside-down by this kid. This boy who, for all intensive purposes, has the exact same level of maturity as him. I can go on about this pathetic guy, I can talk about how him being a katana/samurai is ironic, how much indoctrination could've happened. I mean I don't think this will be the last time we see him. He is a persistent reminder of why denji became chainsaw man in the first place. And he's got a lot to work through and realize.
