Okay so it turns out if you were raised to believe that demons and spirits are around you at all times waiting for you to slip up so they can fucking GET you it's actually really difficult to let yourself relax

#So it turns out I still have a deeply rooted fear of demons #I see my therapist later today and might talk more about it but we've developed a 'fail safe' or 'plan Y'#where if I do get possessed by demons I'll just return to the church #but that'll be a 'if/when that happens' thing #right now it's testing little by little until the demon does get me #(IF it ever gets me) [it won't but my nervous system doesn't know that]#ex christian #religious trauma

Ex evangelical people I have a question for y'all; is it like, an at all common experience to get anxious about the supernatural being real? Because I do, and I feel so stupid that I feel this way over a joke about a curse, or people talking about ghosts and/or demons like they're real.

I think this stems from being taught that demons and the like are real things and they're out to get you. Hell my PASTOR apparently claimed he saw something one night in his kitchen (? I think?) that he thought was supernatural. I can't really remember details of this, I think I was told the bare bones version of it when I was like, 7 or 8, but I do know that he and all the other adults around me at that church just talked about this stuff like it was real and could very well be a threat.

#I think it's fairly common yea #my family was the 'spiritual warfare' type #I don't have much anxiety about the supernatural #but that's because I have a belief that if you don't mess with it it won't mess with you #a ghost or demon can't touch you if you believe it's carbon monoxide and a too-low dose of mood stabilizers #curses are the ones that get me tho cause of prosperity gospel and the power of the tongue type shit #Update: turns out I do believe in demons but not intentionally
