BatFriends v SuperCritics - The Dawn of Cinematic Experience
For a couple of years now, social networks have changed the way we do things. From shopping decisions, making friends, and establishing memories; social networks provided us with solutions not even possible 10 years ago. One of which is having a global consensus on relevant issues with our peers.
I’ll cut the 'deep intro bull' short: Right now, people are torn whether or not 'Batman V Superman' sucked. Although, to be honest, the boat is 60-70%, in favor of those who say that it's pretty much a GOOD film.
Before you light up your torch and pitchforks with your hateful "The writing was sloppy" "Critics say it was a horrible film" "The only good thing was Batfleck" "It was boring af" comments and swore me off with witchcraft and heresy, lemme say this first:
Those things are also very true*.
*Up to debate. Currently, the critics from Rotten Tomatoes ranked it at 29%, whilst audience score is at 73%. Your call on who to listen.
BatFriends v SuperCritics
Movie critics have been poised as the dominant authority as to whether or not a movie is 'worth' watching. It helps us, the casual movie-goers, become smarter consumers of the art. They have been a shining beacon for us, as they guide us to avoid 'rotten'(pun intended) movies with their wit and eloquent writing.
Their only flaw is that most people find them as 'gods' of the movie industry, and a bad review will break a movie apart even before premier date.
I consider this as a flaw as being 'dependent' on them distorts our cinema experience. Seeing an 11% rating on Divergent: Allegiant will make you think twice about watching this movie. For some, it may save them a few bucks. However, fans of the series and YA addicts will be frightened and be alienated(pun intended) by the sight of a sub-par score. This, in turn, may affect how the general audiences view the movie, and it might create a stigma "This movie has horrible reviews, so it might be truly horrible."
Social networks, on the other hand, provide an alternative source of information. Social networks changed the paradigm of entertainment, and we barely even noticed it. It was once quoted that social networks will be the digital 'water-cooler' of the next generation. We are no longer just the passive recipient, but also the active participant of information. How often have you discovered movies, TV shows, YouTube channels, fan pages, and spoilers via your social circle? We're you also intrigued by 'Heneral Luna' because of the social network buzz they created a year ago?
Although, the information generated and shared to us by social networks is not of the purest form, and is highly preferential. What might be a great movie for your nerdy friends might not be as well accepted by your girly friends.
What does this say to us? Why is that the audience score is so far from the critic score? Why is it that the official movie critics have a very different view of the movie in contrasts to the fans? Did we watch a different movie?
Love it or hate it, there's a reason why the word 'preference' is among my favorite words. It's like me saying "I love black coffee, but I'm not forcing you to love it as well."
TL;DR - Take everything with a grain of salt. Movie reviews from critics and friends can be very biased. The best way to enjoy a movie is to just enjoy the goddamn movie because everybody has their own preference.
My take on Batman V Superman
Guess what: I'm the niche market that BvS was aiming for, and I really loved the movie. It reminds me more of the gritty, twisted, and dark world of Watchmen, made by the same director. He's no Kubrick or Hitchcock, but you get what you expect from Snyder. Personally,
I enjoyed almost 5 hours (I watched it twice) of fantasy provided by Snyder and company, given I loved the easter eggs (how timely it's Easter now). The movie has its apparent flaws that most people will complain about, namely pacing, writing, and consistency.
My rating would be: 34/43
In the end, does it really matter what they all say? Does it matter what I say? Now if you let these 'reviews' rob you of your experience, it's up to you. If you let your friends dictate that the movie sucked, it's up to you too. When I was a kid, nobody give a damn about reviews from critics and friends. We just watched what was out there (I recall I even watched twilight ffs) and had a great time.
Watch it for the sake of the cinematic experience, if you're looking for some.
