wietkoning said: ( we should really have these guys interact at some point )
((Oh, definitely!
I should hopefully have a lot more time to RP in the next few months, since I have no more big travel planned, and there isn’t another conference until December...))
10 12 16
10. If they had a choice, would they prefer a subway or a bus for public transportation?
Both of them are actually very attached to becak as their main mode of public transportation, even though you can only fit two or three people into one at a time. Not only are they ubiquitous, they’re actually a big part of both cities’ economies, and the people who operate them would be pretty screwed if some other mass transit took over. Neither Darman nor Ardiyanti would want to see that happen to some of their citizens!
That said, if push came to shove, they’d both pick the bus over the subway. Buses do exist in both cities; Solo has some particularly nice new ones. Part of that would just be preference to see the city as one travels through it. But Darman in particular would also be extra skeptical of traveling underground, seeing as the earth has tried to kill him (by way of volcanoes and earthquakes) repeatedly.
12. Describe 5 unusual characteristics your muse has.
Solo/Ardi
Her speaking voice is of a pretty moderate register, so the incredibly high notes she can sing come as a complete surprise in comparison.
While she is generally calm and composed in her person to person interactions, put her on a motorcycle, and all bets are off. While she is not ad hominem aggressive, she also has absolutely no qualms about weaving around and making close turns. She is fearless about navigating tough traffic. Which is, to be fair, pretty typical for her residents, but surely likely to freak out people from places with more organized traffic laws. Even Los Angeles would be skeptical!
When she gets stressed out, she relieves it by cooking.
Though you’d never be able to tell from her expression, it is hard for her to resist from offering suggestions and tutoring in artistic fields when she is not explicitly in a position of teacher. But this is because she genuinely wants to help people get better at things no matter their level, not because she thinks people suck at things.
She is one of those people who, when concentrating on something, will completely lose track of her sense of time and also of any possible physical discomfort.
Jogja/Darman
He really doesn’t need very much sleep. He manages to conserve enough of his naturally high energy level by keeping relatively composed that he can keep going for hours.
He is totally fine with simply not sharing details he doesn’t want people to know, but when it comes down to overtly lying about things, he feels deeply guilty. Not to mention, he’s bad at it - if he actually does try to lie, it’s something that can crack through the rest of his expression. So, he’ll stick to just not sharing things if he doesn’t want someone to know.
He is absolutely an heir of the Mataram kingdom and an immortal not-quite-human thing, but when he dances, he’s less inclined toward the royal and sophisticated roles. He actually has more fun dancing the parts of the clowns or ogres.
Though it could easily be argued that the Sultan serves him, as he is the city and is older than any one ruler, Darman doesn’t see it that way. If the Sultan says hop, he hops, no question.
He makes Ardi look like a good driver.
Whoops, I guess this was less unusual characteristics and more random facts, but OH WELL.
16. What are their best school subjects? What are their worst? List five of each.
This is actually a really tricky one, since neither of them were raised in a situation where they went to a standardized school with specific subjects taught by different teachers over multiple class periods. That just wasn’t so much of a thing in the era when they were of school age, and especially not given their heirs-to-the-kingdom status. Soooo, I’m going to punt on the list of five best and worst aspect, and just be more general.
In general, both of them would do very well in pretty much every creativity-based class you could think of. They’d both be at the top of their music and dance classes. Jogja’s better in the creative writing/storytelling class and Solo’s better in the visual art class, but they’d both still do very well in both of these. Given that both of them were raised with a clear sense of their background as cities, they would also both do well in history classes.
Yogyakarta is known as a city of students nowadays. It’s home to many universities with many strengths. This has absolutely influenced Darman; his natural curiosity feeds into this as well. He likes learning things in general, and won’t brush any subject aside. That said, he does particularly well at writing and public speaking, in addition to all of the arts and history classes. He does less well, however, at government/civics classes, because he basically goes by whatever the Sultan says, and would zone out in a class that goes into the nitty gritty. He also wishes he could do well at earth science, since his region is so threatened by natural hazards, but his superstitions and beliefs about the hazardous personalities of local volcanoes and faults and tsunami-laden oceans make him incredibly nervous and on-edge about the whole topic, to the point where he wouldn’t do well on any test he might have to take.
The most prominent university in Surakarta is an arts institute; this reinforces the fact that Ardi’s best subjects would all fall into that area. She really devotes herself to studying and teaching the arts, but would likely be the kind of student who was more lukewarm to the other stuff. She is smart and would not necessarily do badly, but would get the kinds of grades that reflect the fact that she’d rather be singing than discussing economics, for example. Aside from those arts classes, Ardi would do well in literature and in classes about teaching itself. As for her weakest points, that would be the kind of more abstract math that has no immediately apparent application to the real world. She’s quite good at geometry and trigonometry and math with visuals, but she gets bored at the stuff that’s really just numbers.
FOR BOTH: 2, 7, 18, 22
2. Does your character have any noteworthy features? Freckles? Dimples? A scar somewhere unusual? etc.
((Neither of them have any particularly striking unusual features - though people from most parts of the world would see the both of them as very short. Jogja does have some light scarring on his torso from repeated eruptions of Mt. Merapi, but he has generally managed to recover pretty well and the scars wouldn’t really qualify as disfiguring. Solo has managed to escape this affliction only because she’s further from the volcano.))
7. How does your character perceive themselves? Positive? Negative? Neutral?
((They both think highly of themselves; they were brought into existence as heirs to a powerful kingdom, and neither one of them has lost sight of this. But neither one of them manifests this as holier-than-thou arrogance; it comes through as poise, and a sense of responsibility to citizens to be a place that is worthy of that kingdom. (Ok, to be fair, the ego comes out a little more overtly when Jogja and Solo are interacting with each other, but even that snark is usually expressed in the form of out-artistic-ing each other.)
In general, Jogja is more confident and at ease with his status and stature. While Solo doesn’t really have self-doubt, she does feel like she has to work harder to keep up. Some of this ties back to her losing status as a special region and being a mere city in a larger region, and some certainly has to do with the fact that she knows not many people know who she is outside of her own country. But she is deeply confident in her positive self-image when it comes to arts and culture, so she leans on that when she’s on edge about something else.))
18. Are they a leader, do they prefer to follow, or would they rather just stay on the sidelines altogether?
((This depends entirely on the context. As cities, they are both cultural leaders, and Jogja is also the government center of its own region. But as people, Cip and Ardi are not generally stand up and be the leader types. They both recognize that, as cities, they are shaped by the people who are residents and the people who lead them. Even with the free will that comes from them being embodied as humans, the way their personalities are shaped is ultimately a form of following what happens, and they do recognize this.
On a smaller scale, they are both comfortable in leadership positions in an artistic context, though the role of leader is often subtle and organizational rather than flashy and obvious. Jogja is an amazing dhalang (shadow puppet master) and Solo does like to lead the occasional class.
One on one, Jogja is more extroverted and is very much someone who will take the lead in starting a conversation. Solo is more introverted; she’s more content to let someone else start the conversation, especially since that m.eans they are surely interested to talk with her.))
22. Does your character trust people right off the bat or does it take them some time to warm up to someone?
((They’re both pretty trusting and hospitable. This has screwed them over in the path (read: several centuries of Dutch colonialism), but that still hasn’t substantially changed the fact that they largely think of people as good, and treat them nicely and warmly because that’s just what you do.
In terms of warming up one-on-one, Jogja needs basically no time for that. He likes people and likes conversations, likes getting to know about people’s day to day lives in his city, or where someone is visiting from and what they’ve done. His default state is that he probably likes you until you’ve done something to un-earn that. Solo’s default is also trusting hospitality, though she is calmer about it, and needs a little more time and interaction to mentally elevate someone from “person I’ll be polite and nice to” to “I like this person specifically.”))
[oc of your choice + C5!]
((Decided to go with Ardiyanti (Solo), because she’s new and I have very little practice drawing her!))
((I did that thing.))

Both! 。゚(TヮT)゚ , ( ⌒o⌒)人(⌒-⌒ ) , (・∀・ )
。゚(TヮT)゚。 = What makes the character laugh
Jogja: He’s not a big bold out-loud laugher. Where your standard American might chuckle, he’s more likely to just smile really big, and where others might guffaw, he has more of a quiet giggle while grinning. But he has a good sense of humor all around. Both wordplay and slapstick will get him, particularly when combined with well-executed dance or theater. If it’s poking fun of some current event, all the better. He also tends to smile or laugh a little when he’s stumbled over something (figuratively or literally) and realizes he can’t hide that he’s a little embarrassed. And, if he’s smiling or teasing you while you’re in earshot, it means he likes you and it’s all good.
Solo: She’s also pretty restrained about laughing out loud, but also still has a good sense of humor. She just shows it more in her expressions than in vocalization. Wordplay and snarky commentary are definitely high on the list of what gets her, though she is definitely not above appreciating a good fart joke in the second act of a wayang. Small children being awkward and adorable push basically all of her humor buttons at once. She’s also likely to smile or laugh awkwardly if someone else is doing something that really ought to embarrass them but somehow hasn’t.
( ⌒o⌒)人(⌒-⌒ ) = Friends the character has or would like to make
They are both, in general, friendly people who like other people. Jogja is certainly more up front and outgoing about approaching random visitors and residents alike just to chat. Solo is less direct about it, but still happy to interact and get to know who is in her city. Being on friendly and peaceful terms with people and neighboring cities, and minimizing need for conflict (other than the well-established arts rivalry between the two of them) is definitely a goal they can agree on, and they’re doing pretty well.
From a standpoint as cities in particular, they also both would like to make more friends outside their own region. They both feel like they’re more aware of other cities around the world than those cities are of them, and they’d like some more mutual recognition/interaction levels.
(・∀・ ) = The character’s emotional state most of the time
Jogja’s mind is constantly going. He’s the embodiment of a city that is constantly going and never fully rests, and there’s some constant energy source fueling thought and observation and curiosity and possible interaction. Even if he appears outwardly calm, he’s trying to take in and assess everything around him as a person, in addition to some deeper sense of what’s going on around him as a city. But he thrives on that activity and thought, on all of the stories that come from being such an active city full of so many human interactions. As such, he is generally content and cheerful, and almost never worn down.
Solo is also someone who is generally content and cheerful most of the time. Like her brother, she is very attuned to what is going on around her directly, and more diffusely around the city that she embodies. But even if there is a lot going on, she digests it all in more linear trains of thought, not so all over the place. If Jogja is a person who processes things by jumping in directly, Solo is more someone who processes by observing and taking stock before interacting as an individual. But this absolutely does not mean she is detached or disengaged - it’s just a different way of handling being a busy city.
So in general - they’re both in a pretty good place emotionally, as humans and as cities. Of course they have their down moments, but who doesn’t? Those moments are not dominant for either of them.
OOC: Slow this week
((Hate to make an OOC post like this so soon on a new blog but - things are going to be a little slow this week, since I’m going to be at another research conference.
I do anticipate having time to check in on things in the evenings - and I also do expect to have time to answer that one meme-releated ask tonight! But apologies if some RP starts with either of these two and then it’s slow until the end of the week...))
submit form | tags | faq & about A community directory for original personifications of countries, states, cities and more! IMPORTANT! Before submitting, please read the FAQ first!
Hey guys, I’ve been discussing this with a pretty cool friend of mine to make this directory for a while.Because we figured to do this so we can organize many the interpretations and creativity going on. (We actually were going to name this State Tan Directory but then we realized the acronym was going to be STD so it was “SHIT” so… haha.)
So if you can send your OC ( Whether it be State, City, County, Country -) that would be cool. Both Hetalia and non-Hetalia based are accepted.
One of the problems in the State/Country OC fandom is that we noticed how individuals consistently had to know someone else to get into it. And not only that, it was hard to find people. I loosely did a OC list back in the day, but I often neglected many creative Hetalia based OCs and also on top of it ignored many outside of Tumblr. I eventually lost track and it no longer cuts it. So instead I decided to with another awesome individual to make this instead for organizational purposes to lead people to other interpretations, who people can click with and so on.
There will be a lot more things added later, such as basic tips how to avoid toxic people and so on but for now it’s very bare bones. Please send in some submissions, and make sure to read the FAQ.

Reblog if you are willing to roleplay with an ESL student
For those of you who don’t know, ESL stands for English as a Second Language. It has happened to me more than one time to be discriminated because my sentence structure is a bit different and since people care so much for being literate, I would like to know those who don’t really discriminate, as long as it is understandable and it doesn’t show horrible mistakes that makes it hard to read.
*This is a busy enough street that it’s hard to keep track of everything that’s going on, but then, that’s part of the problem, isn’t it? It’s only because the small man trying to catch up to you has been persistent that you eventually notice him.*
Hey, you dropped this!
((Oops.
My hand slipped for basically three days straight and I personified the cities I visited while I was in Java.
On the left is Yogyakarta (Jogja) and on the right is Surakarta (Solo). They’re the cultural centers of central Java, but they’re quite different from each other despite this shared role. Jogja’s a lot more chaotic and all over the place in terms of its attractions and activities, while Solo is calmer and more focused on classical arts in particular.
In this picture, they’re all dressed up for a wayang kulit performance - that’s shadow puppet theater, accompanied by gamelan music. (This is what we did on our tour, in fact.) The thing in the middle is called a gunungan, which most basically sets the scene. Jogja is the dhalang - the master of the show, who controls the puppets, their voices, the story, and the musical cues. Solo is the pesindhen - the featured female vocalist, who is basically just as big of a star as the dhalang.
(A brief note about their batik - my headcanon is that, even in the era when this particular pattern was forbidden for everyone other than people associated with the palace, the cities themselves were still allowed to wear it. Yes, their respective sultans might’ve been ruling over them as people, but they also would’ve been serving them as cities. I also figure that a region with animistic beliefs in general would take particular note of their city personifications walking around.)
It’s a good thing these are not their everyday outfits, because I don’t think I could stand to draw this much detail regularly. Holy crap.
Also, I apologize for this detour halfway around the globe and will get back to Riverside’s askbox now that this particular drawing is out of my system. But I absolutely cannot promise I’m done drawing these two.))
((I am a weak-willed human being and I made them a blog. Say hi to Cip and Ardi!))
