Decolonize Witchcraft and Spirituality!
That means:
Respect closed practices! Either go through the proper channels to be initiated or leave them alone!
Respect indigenous and diasporic cultural traditions! Many of these cultures were nearly wiped out by colonization. Respect the boundaries of what you can and can’t practice as an outsider.
Purchase crystals from reputable sources! Some crystals are mined unethically and through minimally-paid or slave labor.
Stop supporting shops and authors who appropriate from closed cultures! It should be obvious, but don’t buy dreamcatchers from a non-Native person and avoid metaphysical authors who perpetuate racist stereotypes about marginalized religions and magical traditions.
Listen to and prioritize witches of color/practitioners of color in dialogues about racism, cultural appropriation, and exotification in the magical communities.
Examine your own craft and see if you are unintentionally appropriating any cultures
Educate yourself on practices outside of your own so you don’t unintentionally invalidate or appropriation marginalized religions and spiritual practices.
My only advice for y'all about tarot is that the fool and death do not mean what u assume they mean and u should relax
Ppl will pull death and have a twenty minute panic attack then pull the tower and be like that doesn't bother me
been on tik tok recently, and i'm starting to get some witchy videos on my for you page and a lot of them don't put enough credence in UPG. widely agreed upon things are great, yes, but in the end we're all the weird hippy relatives so who can say what's actually correct and what's not a lot of the time. personal beliefs, so long as they aren't somehow damaging, are just as valid as anything else. i think some of us are starting to forget that.
To be a Local Witch
Throughout history and our legends, Witches and Wizards were the crazy men and women that lived on the outskirts of the village. Their craft was wild and strange to those that lived in the village, but, nonetheless, people would seek after their wisdom of the land, the plants, the local spirits, and for wisdom or guidance in their path. These men and women, often bachelors, would know the ins and outs of the region and often went walking alone.
Today, our villages are less rustic and more like local towns, and suburbs. But one can still be a Local Witch, and develop special connections with the land you call home.
Become a Local Witch:
Learn Local Lore Folktales, legends, and even tall tales develop the culture of a town or area. Learn these. Retell them over summer campfires, and over drinks with friends. People will start to LOVE your stories.
Start Frequenting locally owned shops and stores Develop connections and relationships with the owners and those that work there every day. Learn their names, and introduce yourself after visiting more often. Supporting locally owned shops helps small business owners and provides nourishment to your community. This is putting down roots, and develops your connection with the people that shape your town.
Find a Local Bookstore This is an extension of 1 and 2. Locally owned bookstores always have a Local Writers, Local Plants, and Local History sections. Ask inside where these sections are, and start devouring these books. Not only will you be supporting a local shop, but you have a direct source of helpful information. Oftentimes, employees and owners also know a lot of Lore. Talk to them about what you’re interested in learning. They probably have some hidden gems of information.
Learn about your Indigenous Plants Start researching and learning about the flora that grows locally, learn their lore, their uses, and magical or folklore associations. If Natives from your area used these plants, find out how. Learn where these plants grow and research local foraging. If you’ve never foraged, see if you can find a local group that can serve as helpful guides to stay safe. Never ingest anything unless you are SURE.
Start a local Plant Grimoire Keep dried presses of flowers and plants in it, draw and diagram to help you remember what they look like.
Learn about the indigenous animals Research their folklore and mythology. Start finding out what they eat, and what their habitats are. (Safely) Do your part to help foster their growth and health. This could be making insect houses to help local endangered pollinators, or leaving out special birdseed for endangered bird species in the area. (Safely) Start interacting with the non-aggressive species and leave them treats. This is great for birds, deer, rabbits, moles, chipmunks, hedgehogs, etc
Join local Conservation Projects Getting directly involved in wildlife conservation strengthens our spiritual and natural ties to the land we call our home. Taking personal responsibility and interest in it’s stewardship is honoring the spirits of the land, and the Gods.
Use Google Maps while exploring parks, or protected open spaces to drop pins and places where you find animal habitats or useful plants for foraging.
That’s all for now. More will come later I’m sure. Now go be the best local Witch or Druid you can be!
@ baby witches
As I’m making a post about fire witches, I’d like to remind my baby witches out there:
You do not have to work directly with fire.
As someone who has fire-related triggers to PTSD, I can reassure you that you can work with the energies of fire without having to deal with fire itself. Fire, along with any other element, has its own correspondences. All that matters is your intent.
So the sun? Fire energy. Chili peppers? Fire energy. Those lil electric candles you can get at the dollar store? Fire energy.
Don’t put yourself at risk for anxiety and any other attack because you think you need to be in the direct presence of actual fire for a ritual.
ive been getting into tarot recently…… here are some cards i keep seeing
i think we should utilize palindromes in spellcraft more. idk how just that we should
Kiss that bitch goodbye
For when someone has wronged you and you’re ready to cut them from your life.
💋Gather toilet paper, a pen, lemon juice, and water.
💋Write down their name and how they wronged you on slips of paper.
💋Write down (and speak if you like) what you hope will happen to them.
💋Tear up paper, place at bottom of cup.
💋Add lemon juice “I remove all the sourness you brought to my life and any sourness you would’ve brought in any future”.
💋Add water and stir. “I wash away your ill-affects and ill wishes”.
💋Flush down the toilet.
💋Optional: Blow a kiss and say “bye bitch” (or other colorful language)
what herbs would you recommend for a hex on someone. i want to cause them emotional strife, nightmares, confusion, bad luck, etc. all i have so far is cayenne and maybe garlic but im not sure?
Ooo, I haven’t had a hexing question in a minute! Let me dust off my best cackle.
Depending on what method you’re using to cast the actual spell, there are several options. If you’re using sympathetic magic through a physical item like a potato or a poppet, thorns or cactus spines are a pretty universal go-to. If you’re using a jar or a bottle, vinegar or eggs (which are left to rot) are also popular. Just don’t keep that one around your house; it’ll stink up the place in a hurry. If you’re using an open-air method, I once heard of a fantastic little curse wherein a piece of paper bearing the target’s name is pinned to an orange, which is then stuck up inside a chimney to rot, taking the person’s health with it. Can’t say I recommend that one for simple pest control reasons, but it’s interesting nonetheless.
But it sounds like you’re more interested in something general or all-purpose. Just a full-spectrum cosmic slap upside the head.
You’re off to a good start with the Cayenne Pepper. That’s my go-to for any sort of hexing. It’s meant to cause discomfort, anxiety, and general pain that’s hard to pin down or get rid of. Most any chili pepper is good for this purpose. I keep small jars of varying types for all occasions. My theory is the hotter the pepper, the more it will hurt. (Do I have a jar of dried Ghost Peppers? Why yes I do.)
Black Mustard Seed is good for general discord, bad luck, or strife. Lemon or Lime seeds are good for bitterness or a general “souring” of situations. Mullein, so often used for sleep magic, can bring nightmares. (Most effective when soaked in vinegar first.) Lemon Grass, Nettle, Paprika, and Wormwood all bring generalized strife when applied to hex blends.
Or, if you’re in the business of backhanded blessings, simply mix up the nicest blessing mix you can put together, the exact OPPOSITE of what you wish for this person, and then add Ash of Roses and burnt Cinquefoil to create an inverse effect. This method is a little trickier, but it’s a good thing to keep in your back pocket if you’re running low on supplies.
If anyone is interested, I have a longer list of plants for baneful magic listed by purpose in the back of Grovedaughter Witchery. Always Practice Safe Hex by cleansing and shielding yourself before and after casting, and remember to close those loopholes!
Happy Hexing!
Heads up, whatever you do, DON’T BURN THE CAYENNE PEPPER. Did that once during a powerful counter-curse and it was AWFUL. We were all choking, the cat (who often participates in workings) threw up, it was bad. Turns out burning peppers makes mace. Just don’t.
Oh my goodness, YES. This is very important safety tip!
If you’re working with any sort of pepper, in any form, DO NOT apply fire to the substance. The regret will be instant, I promise you.
Also, make sure you wash your hands thoroughly with water and dish soap after handling peppers or pepper products. Regular hand soap may not remove or break up the chili oil on your skin. If you touch your face or use the bathroom before washing your hands, well…..let’s just say PAIN. LOTS OF PAIN.
HEALING
as witches, it can be tempting to go straight for holisitic and homeopathic remedies for everything. this isn't necessarily a bad thing--folk remedies have been used for centuries for a reason. however, they shouldn't be used as an alternative to real, actual medical intervention, at least not always. for some people, doing simple things like drinking certain teas or doing yoga or using a homemade salve will be all they need. for others, it's laughable to even imagine.
it's also useful to keep in mind what is useful to you may even be harmful to others.
i have constant headaches and severe, daily migraines. i have for as long as i can remember. the headaches really, truly never stop (even doctors can't get this sometimes; it's not that they're frequent, it's that i've never had a moment i can remember without a pain in my head). i don't take medication for it currently because even prescription medication has not been able to help me so far, if you suggest staying hydrated or drinking chamomile tea i will laugh in your face.
i also have extremely average blood pressure. like, EXTREMELY average. i am the poster child for average blood pressure. however, when things are known affect blood pressure as a side effect, they make me bottom out. i've had to be dragged back into emergency rooms while leaving because of this, it's kind of annoying.
i've had someone recommend blood pressure medication for my headaches.
someone who was not a doctor, and doesn't know anything about my physical health.
that could literally kill me.
we know, for the most part, that you mean well. but be careful with advice!
@heatherwitch tagging you because this is sort of in your wheelhouse for topics :+)
Witch’s bevarage
witch tip don't put ingredients you're allergic to in spells for healing
🍊🌙 ||: the "everything but the kitchen sink" money/prosperity jar spell
honestly, this is a very basic spell and if you switch “money/prosperity” for a different intention, you can use this as a basic crash course in how to make any jar spell! also, if you noticed i used parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme, don’t worry. it IS intentional ;~) this is my first time actually posting a spell, too…!!
things you will need —
outside of the jar
jar with a lid or cork (i used an old spaghetti sauce jar #thriftwitch)
candle (any color works, i used yellow. if color plays a lot into your craft, i’d suggest green, yellow, or white; or just whatever you associate with money/prosperity! if you don’t want to seal your jar with wax, feel free to skip this)
incense (i used honeysuckle because i use honeysuckle for everything, but anything you associate with money/prosperity is fine. this is for cleansing–if smoke isn’t an option, for whatever reason, do whatever cleansing you prefer)
sharpie (or other writing utensil that will write on the material of your jar)
sigil(s) for money/prosperity (for writing on said jar. i used the first one in this post, a dollar sign, and the alchemical symbol for earth. if you don’t want to do this, feel free to skip this and the sharpie)
crystal(s) for money/prosperity (i used clear quartz and citrine. this is for charging the jar once it’s finished. if you’d rather not, feel free to skip this)
inside the jar
any herbs/spices/dry ingredients you associate with money/prosperity, and protection and/or happiness, if you’d like a real jack of all trades. here’s what i used, but i suggest doing your own research and following your personal associations:
basil
bay leaf (with sigil drawn on it, if you’d like. i used a green-barreled with black ink pen with the first sigil in this post. it can also be the same one you draw on the jar)
black pepper
chamomile
cinnamon (ground and/or stick, i used both)
clove
coffee grounds
dill
ginger
himalayan pink salt
nutmeg
parsley
rice
rosemary
sage
sugar
thyme
a coin/bill/money of some kind, if you can spare any (i used a nickel, but anything will work. or, if you really need to save every cent, feel free to skip this)
steps —
1. gather materials
raid your kitchen cabinets/herb garden/what have you!
2. prepare for the spell in whatever way you would like
do whatever you normally do to start a spell; cast a circle, cleanse, ward, meditate, dance, clap, scream, call upon a deity or multiple deities, if that’s your jam. you can write the sigils on your jar now or after it’s sealed, i did it after.
3. light your incense and candle, if applicable
use the smoke from the incense to cleanse the jar, and the ingredients as you add them if you’d like. any ashes it produces before you seal the jar can be added to it, or if it’s after you can collect them and use them in black salt.
4. throw it all in the jar
okay, don’t actually throw it. that’ll just make a mess. but you know what i mean! there’s no real order to how you should do this, just do whatever feels right to you. whatever works! make sure to focus on your intention while you do this as much as you can.
5. seal your jar
put the lid on/cork in, and seal it with the wax from the candle, if you want. once it’s sealed, surround it with your crystals. let the incense burn out, then feel free to move your crystals whenever you feel they’re ready. trust your intuition.
6. finished!
or, in other words, profit. put your jar somewhere safe!
i didn't think to post anything about my results on this because i put this post together like, right after i did it, but if you are curious a family friend loaned us $1,000 USD last night, which means i'm going to be able to get my medications refilled!! ymmv, of course, but i did have success with it. happy casting! <3
witch tip!
burn honeysuckle incense in front of an open window to give your whole neighborhood a bit of an upkick; the scent of honeysuckle is said to induce happiness and positive moods!
