destroying and betraying yourself for nothing all by yourself, handsome?
Fell deeds awake. Now for wrath. Now for ruin. And the red dawn!
do you think the catholic church effectively utilized wokeness by funneling money into the colonization and rape of the americas after issuing the doctrine of discovery which effectively legalized the subjugation of indigenous peoples?
Maedhros and Nerdanel :"(
I love every exploration of why Maglor ultimately submits to Maedhros' will after briefly considering doing the right thing for a whole two hot minutes; whether it's Maglor still acting as Maedhros' vassal, or more personal reflections on their relationship (affection that borders on codependency; Maglor's guilt, sometimes coupled with manipulation on Maedhros' part) I find all of it compelling. But also I feel like the simplest answer lies with Maglor himself aka confronting the implications of giving up the Silmaril for good and what that would mean for him/them. It would entail returning to Valinor and facing the consequences - not merely as a vague, self-centered horror he has been part of but in relation to the people he has wronged. Which grants Maglor more autonomy in that moment as his choice is not simply one of submission to Maedhros but a *conscious*, *personal* refusal to confront what repentance would truly require. BUT. If the blame cannot be shifted onto external pressure or another's will, those 2 fleeting minutes of repentance lose some of their weight.
But perhaps it is all of these factors at play at once (codependence and guilt and refusal to face the obvious consequences of true repentance). Which is precisely what makes it so messy and so awesome.
and then what happened?
Viking dresses by Savelyeva Ekaterina
Another visual demonstration that historical clothing wasn’t dingy and monochrome.
All of these colours can be obtained from vegetable dyes, producing different shades depending on what mordant (colour fixative - alum, different metal filings, different vinegars) was used. See here and here for examples.
BRING THIS FASHION BACK.
Not clothes, but this was a palette developed by the National Museum of Denmark based on paint residue from archaeological finds for the purpose of painting a reconstructed hall.
Apparently, they can tell from the chemical composition that the colours wouldn’t be mixed with black or white to mute them, but be used in their brightest form. Bright yellow and red was achieved with expensive dyes (orpiment and cinnabar) and was thus fashionable. (Source in Danish)

What is a man? An ecstatic little pile of pigments.
^reblogging for that comment
Forever reminder that the ancient world was colorful everywhere, and every attempt to brownwash it in modern fiction is sheer laziness.
Beren saying "even now a silmaril is in my hand", then showing off his empty stump, might be the best play in the whole mythology. Absolute king shit
you know the drill.... put that gayass character in a little oufit!!!!!
An idyllic stream of cold mountain water, running out of a copse of trees that turns into a mysterious fog, decorated with blooming heather, and alive with dippers searching for their lunch. Being the only human here for all this was one of my favorite experiences out in nature in my life. Instantly memorable. Cascades, July 2020.
the saeros episode is an all-time hit because on the surface túrin has not yet suffered enough to be acting this unhinged. like it’s a level of escalation that is really shocking so early in his character arc and seems to exist to demonstrate how destructive this guy can be. like battle to the death or not túrin’s behaviour is far too drawn out to be dismissed as a momentary flare of temper - what he does to saeros is an extended exercise in cruelty and humiliation
but also túrin has been subjected to this fucker’s racist abuse for a long time now and no one has stopped it. this elf is a high-ranking counsellor to túrin’s foster parent and his attitude has gone completely unchecked - he may be described as ‘cunning’ with ‘his malice veiled’ but he’s also openly talking about how he doesn’t want men in doriath - come on, there is wilful ignorance happening here. meanwhile túrin is an already-traumatised misfit who we know prefers to suffer silently until he explodes.
the aftermath of the event is familiar to members of minority groups or even anyone who just got bullied: the abuse is dismissed, downplayed or obfuscated until the victim retaliates, and when they retaliate it often seems sudden and disproportionate because the buildup was only palpable to them. no wonder túrin doesn’t even bother to defend himself. no one in the city seems to have given him any reason to trust that they’ll treat him fairly, and his willingness to leave seems to imply that he never felt particularly welcome in doriath to begin with.
but also because he has nuance as a character he’s also just a bit wrong about all that and a lot of that may just be his problem. when thingol and friends get the whole story they’re very much on his side. he doesn’t afford them the proper trust to understand him and care for him and that’s one of his flaws. but also you can hardly blame him for that flaw because he’s a 20yr old with a lost father (abandonment issues) and a mother who sent him away (abandonment issues x2.) he just fucking rules he’s just so well written for an author who is not imho great at character writing
1 or 2?
Wheat Field with Cypresses at the Haude Galline near Eygalieres (1889) by Vincent van Gogh
‘While bats can only sense the outer shapes and textures of their targets, dolphins can peer inside theirs. If a dolphin echolocates on you, it will perceive your lungs and your skeleton. It can likely sense shrapnel in war veterans and fetuses in pregnant women. It can pick out the air-filled swim bladders that allow fish, their main prey, to control their buoyancy.
It can almost certainly tell different species apart based on the shape of those air bladders. And it can tell if a fish has something weird inside it, like a metal hook. In Hawaii, false killer whales often pluck tuna off fishing lines, and “they’ll know where the hook is inside that fish,” Aude Pacini, who studies these animals, tells me. “They can ‘see’ things that you and I would never consider unless we had an X-ray machine or an MRI scanner.”
This penetrating perception is so unusual that scientists have barely begun to consider its implications. The beaked whales, for example, are odontocetes that look dolphin-esque on the outside—but on the inside, their skulls bear a strange assortment of crests, ridges, and bumps, many of which are only found in males.
Pavel Gol’din has suggested that these structures might be the equivalent of deer antlers—showy ornaments that are used to attract mates. Such ornaments would normally protrude from the body in a visible and conspicuous way, but that’s unnecessary for animals that are living medical scanners.’
-Ed Yong, An Immense World
Cetacean echolocation is one of those things that boggles your mind once you really start to think about the implications. They can see each others' hearts beating fast with fear or excitement. They can see if another dolphin is healthy, or pregnant; how the fetus is doing; if they have ingested debris. Their echolocation is also incredibly precise: a bottlenose dolphin could discriminate between cilinders differing in wall thickness by just 0.23 mm (0.009 inch) from 8 meters away!! And they certainly notice when something is off.
I'm not sure if I ever shared this story before here, but in Curacao, when I was allowed to assist in a guest interaction programme, there was suddenly consternation in the pool behind us. A guest had entered the water and the dolphins were going crazy, paying no heed to the trainers anymore. The lead trainer that was with me gave the dolphins to me to watch over while she went to help. When she came back she told me what had happened. The guest that had caused so much uproar had left the water again and was asked if he had done anything to upset the dolphins. He hadn't, and he couldn't imagine what was wrong... until he mentioned he had a pacemaker. The younger dolphins in the pool had never seen someone with a pacemaker before and apparently it rocked their world.
It was such a wild experience, and offered such a cool insight into how dolphins experience their world. I'll never forget it.
just realized ive never posted haleth on the haleth blog.
