So I’ve seen the post comparing treating a chronic illness like dealing with a house that’s on fire, where you have to have a conversation with the firemen about which fire is the most critical to deal with.

I was thinking about that post today, and I don’t think that’s how it usually goes.

I think, in most cases, it’s more like this: The firemen pull up to your burning house. They take a look at the 10 feet at the end of your front yard. At most, it’s a little wilted. They look at it, look at you, and then say, with just a hint of outward doubt, “well I don’t see anything wrong, it looks fine to me. I think you just need to water it a little more.”

Anyone who’s ever had their test results come back as textbook-perfect knows it.

It has nothing to do with these women on the video but the discussion here reminded me of a situation when I was at a club a few years back… a girl was completely passed out on a corner and a guy approached her and started touching her breasts and pulling up her skirt. I was with some male friends and I asked them to go there with me to help her and all of them said no (“not my business” “but it looks like they’re having fun” “I don’t want any problems”). I asked a random girl that was just dancing nearby to go there with me and she just agreed without any objections. The guy freaked out when we verbally confronted him and took off, we found the girl’s friends eventually, everything ended well. But it was terribly disappointing that my male friends, those that call themselves feminist-allies and communists couldn’t care less about a woman being raped and wouldn’t do anything to stop it even when they were called to action.

I read somewhere that one aspect of Toxic Masculinity is believing that being part of a “We” will erase the “I”; that selfhood is threatened by relationships with other people. It reads then that Healthy Masculinity (indeed, healthy people in general) create a “We” that enhances the “I”; that we can become more powerfully ourselves through relationships with other people.

All these men listed (and many more unlisted) live this type of energy, the one that builds connections without fear of losing the self - and in fact builds the self more with the building of connections.
