those were the days... Picture the scene: Monty Python's Flying Circus ran from 1969 to 1974. Nothing, I mean nothing, had been seen like this before on TV. To really appreciate their courage and brilliance you need to know something about these days when gay marriage was not even on the horizon and most people would lose their employment if they were outed at work. The first Pride Parade was in 1970 and it was only in 1973 that the American Psychiatric Association in their generosity declared that homosexuality was not a mental disorder. Being LGBTQ+ was gradually decriminalized in various parts of the UK and a bit later in the US starting slowly in the late '60's.

Meanwhile, Monty Python was winning over hearts and minds through the funny bone. Groundbreaking.

I think Graham Chapman, the 4th man to join the scene, being gay and being a member of Monty Python is worth noting. He had a partner, David Sherlock, and was publicly open with his homosexuality as early as 1972. I just think it makes a difference in how Monty Python treated queerness in sketches when one of their members, their good friends and collaborators, is himself gay.

Not gonna lie this makes me a bit irritated. Here's the real version of this photo:

Instead of a cutesie reference to film censorship it was an explicit statement of defiance of Maryland's criminalization gay sex, which was not repealed until 2002. This wasn't a guy saying "Oh they can't put what I do in the movies according to a completely voluntary industry code" he was saying "The State of Maryland wants to put me in jail for being gay and having gay sex."

It wasn't a guy being cheeky about sex in an ambiguous, cute way. It was a man stating, in no uncertain terms, that a whole state of the United States considered him a criminal for being homosexual.

I was genuinely not prepared for the radical empathy and genuine appreciation for differences like mental illness, learning disabilities, addiction, and neurodivergence in 100 Girlfriends.

Therians, object sexuality, nonverbal autism, age regression, and more are taken seriously and treated as just another way to be. One girl is chubby and nearly seven feet tall, and she's considered just as desirable as the model. The girl who's always grinning vacantly because her brain doesn't get enough blood? Rentarou understands and learns how to read her emotions in other ways. Everything about these girls, even the "bad" things, gets celebrated.

I feel like people are sleeping on this one because of the ecchi content, but this series seems to genuinely, truly LOVE women.

You know, if they do put a trans girl in 100 Girlfriends, even if they exclusively he/him her and call her a crossdresser or femboy instead of a trans woman, it will still be the best representations we've had in years because there will be something deeply, DEEPLY wrong with her completely unrelated to any existing stereotypes. Like being obsessed with spiders or something. Then Rentarou will clasp her hands, stare sincerely into her eyes, and say, "I don't care if you're a boy or a girl. You're beautiful, and I love you. That's all that matters to me," while deadly venomous spiders crawl all over him.

I’m absolutely fascinated by a claim that’s come out of TRF circles a few different times now, which is that “transandrobros” are the newest iteration of truscum.

I’ve seen the claim a few separate times now, and each time the only support that this claim has behind it is the “logic” that:

1. Truscum were a group of trans people with bad ideology

2. Truscum were almost entirely trans men (citation needed, even though I’m just going to take it as true for the rest of the post)

Who else (to the people making this comparison) are a group of almost entirely trans men with bad ideology? Transandrobros!

Which is… an interesting way to try to make a connection. Because if we look at what the ideology actually is, the fact that it’s just “bad” ideology, or ideology a particular person doesn’t agree with doesn’t exactly marry these two concepts together.

If anything, the people arguing against the idea of transandrophobia employ more of the tactics and follow more of the ideology traced out by truscum.

Truscum ideology was about defining who is trans by way of, basically, if they’re trying hard enough to become a stealthing trans person. If you weren’t trying to pass as a cis looking person of the opposite binary gender as to what you were assigned, then you weren’t really trans by this ideology. Nonbinary? By truscum ideology, that’s just a fake identity made up by cis people who want to feel special.

Where, exactly, does this mesh at all with what people are taking about when we talk about transandrophobia?

In my experience, as a nonbinary transmasc, who in arguing about transandrophobia existing has used my own experiences as counterpoints and counterexamples to people’s assertion that there’s male privilege given to all trans people who were AFAB…

I’ve been called a trender (truscum term)

I’ve been told I’m obviously not trying hard enough to pass (the definition of truscum ideology)

I’ve had my name mocked for being ambiguous instead of masculine (seeing the trend here yet?)

Are we seeing why I find it really fascinating that people are trying to say that I’m on the side of the truscum? Simply because trans man/masc + ideology someone doesn’t like must always be the same?
