i think a lot of ppl need to learn how to make minors feel safe online without making them feel stupid? like when i was 11/12/13 i shouldnt have been on tumblr. but i was. and everyone going "oh sweetie youre too young to be here :) go play neopets" just made me want to stay out of spite. you know what wouldve actually helped? someone approaching me and being like "hey, there are dangerous people and things on here. this probably isnt a good environment for you". like im not saying disregard that theyre a minor here, obviously dont do that, but dont be condescending. part of keeping minors safe is treating them with respect

Reminder for my non-jewish followers that don’t really know what Hannukah [and all the other attempts to translate it over] is about, think the following:

Ostensibly people just kinda eat fried things and light candles and contemplate. Yes.  But its also “The current ruling party demanded we not be jewish, forced conversion and desecrated our places of worship. So, its time for a rebellion to kill the occupation and take our shit back. Welp we did it, but they fucked up the temple real bad and the way time works says we won’t have the right things to keep our sacred fire burning. Vortigaunt Headcanons

ON VORTIGESE: There are different complexities to Vortigese, but one of the things that Vorts don’t tend to present on human planets or near humans is the more guttural, un-human sounding noises that are part of the language. In Half-Life 2, most Vorts have switched to a form of Vortigese which is less unsettling to human ears, while in HL1 the sounds they make are both idle reactions to their environment and communication with each other. While Vortigese also involves flux shifting and manipulating the vortessence, the original, less syllabic language was more descriptive. (Vortigaunts picked up using syllables from humans, and have since commonly incorporated it into their language.)

ON THEIR BODIES: While Vorts can’t change the patterns or colours on their skin, they can, over a span of a few months to their whole life, manipulate their form (with the Vortessence) to change their body (as in a very minor shapeshifting, which takes a long time to complete). The easiest ways to change their body are to change their hooves, remove or add their outermost eyes (the tiniest ones), add or take away thumbs, and change some of their torso (thus why it looks so different from HL1 to HL2 to HL:A).

FURTHER EXPLANATION: A reason why Vorts tend to get rid of their outermost eyes on Earth is that there is a LOT of pollution. Sand, grit, and smoke can get into their eyes commonly, which was an extreme rarity on Xen (and was somewhat rarer on their original planet). They often remove their outermost eyes to prevent future distractions or annoyances, especially in battle. The same goes for their hooves: Vorts often change them to adapt to Earth terrain, which is less flat and more difficult to walk on with flat, large, A-shaped hooves. Thumbs are often added to operate Earth tools, which are hard to use without them.

ON TEETH: The teeth that are visible (as in constantly poking out from a Vort’s mouth) aren’t actually teeth! They’re tusks/some kind of spike or weapon! The teeth used for chewing are fully inside the mouth. (Some Vorts still have their mouths facing vertical instead of horizontal like a human’s, as shown in HL1.)

as a general rule. if what we’re calling ‘cultural appropriation’ sounds like nazi ideology (i.e. ‘white people should only do white people things and black people should only do black people things’) with progressive language, we are performing a very very poor application of what ‘cultural appropriation’ means. this is troublingly popular in the blogosphere right now and i think we all need to be more critical of what it is we may be saying or implying, even unintentionally.

There is nothing wrong with everyone enjoying each other’s cultures so long as those cultures have been shared. 

Eating Chinese food, watching Bollywood movies, going to see Cambodian dancers, or learning to speak Korean so you can watch every K drama in existence is totally fine. The invitation to participate in those things came from within those cultures. The Mexican family that owns the place where I get fajitas wants me to eat fajitas. Their whole business model kind of depends on it, actually. 

If you see something from another culture you think you might want to participate in, but you don’t know if that would be disrespectful or appropriative, you can just…ask. Like. A Jewish friend explained what a mezuzah was to me, recently. (It’s the little scroll-thing near their front doors that they touch when they come into their house. It basically means “this is a Jewish household.”)

“Oh, cool,” I said. “Can I touch it? Or is it only for Jewish people?”

“You can touch it or you can not touch it,” she said. “I don’t care.”

“Cool, I’m gonna touch it, then.”

It really boils down to three simple things:

Consent. Is the culture open to sharing this thing? (& don’t cheat by finding one person who consents while most of the culture disagrees.)

Context. If a culture is open to sharing a thing but it is a thing of great religious significance, take the time to learn what is a respectful way to treat the thing. Probably don’t use it as random decoration or sexualize it unless that’s what it’s for. 

Credit. Give credit and if possible, buy from the original creators so the money goes where the credit should be.
