Happy Pride Month from my Angel Dust !!!!! I was going for Drag Queen/Carnival/Vegas showgirl vibes for his look. I also wanted to give off peacock vibes for the MLM Pride flagās palette, fits his sense of flair, and for a peacock jumping spider reference!š¦š·ļø Oh & Angelās fan batons, the symbol is the apple eye(for my Hell Hotel Key symbol)
I added a lot of green & spade symbols for a certain feline he has feelings foršāā¬š°ā ļø If he was to be on his own float, itād be a giant version of Fat Nuggets/like Blitzās being a horse, with spiderweb motifs. š·šš·ļøšøļø
Also, I def see him want to share his float with OG Angel Dust and have a fun party with himš I also can see him have the real versions of their Fat Nuggets with them, dolled up for the Parade as wellššššš
What do u think? How would u want Angel or the others to dress for the Pride Parade? What kinda float would u want them to be on? Iād love to knowš
I've seen a lot of talk of why Alastor was so popular in the first place and I can answer the question as someone who was back in 2019 when the pilot dropped.
It was because of the things we were promised with Alastor.
Sure, his design was fuckass but his personality was so interesting and being the supposed foil to Charlie's ideas drew us in. On top of a lot of the information and a prequel comic to Hazbin. It was said that Alastor had morals, he treated the women with more respect, it was heavily implied that his mother was abused by his father, and does NOT like abusers. He literally killed that pig butcher guy trying to kill that purple lamb gal, literally eating him. It's clear Alastor DID NOT like misogynists.
He also had a weird moral code of he wouldn't chase after someone if they got away from him. On top of the fact he was in contrast with Charlie's ideals and that he would've been the big boss to "can sinners be truly redeemed?" because while Alastor did a lot bad, knows he's bad, but there was still positive qualities to him.
But the fact of that matter is... The writers of Hazbin took this and LITERALLY put it on Vox. The fight against Charlie's ideals and him literally saying: "Do you think *I* could be redeemed?" that was quite literally supposed to be Alastor's moment. Him being the foil to Charlie's ideals and wanting to be a passive roadblock to her problems.
They gave the intrigue to a white, abusive, racist, cult leader instead of the black creole man whom they've made into a sanitized version of himself. Pilot!Alastor I'm so sorry king. THAT'S why Alastor was so beloved back then.
She literally gave everything interesting about Alastor to a white man who basically took over his position.
looking back on the hazbin pilot and the alastor we were promised back then is LEAGUES better than what we have now. they butchered his character all of 5 minutes into the first episode with him chickenscratching "HAHA I MADE THIS ! -> " in the margins of that drawing from the tv advert. its like, they don't understand that sometimes,, having a character be stupid and crass just ruins their whole deal from the get-go. it's lazy as hell writing and it pisses me off bc it is truly. not that difficult. to simply not do that.
it would also definitely be worth looking into *when* spindlehorse confirmed alastor was creole and seeing if that coincides with when his character began to be butchered. it's always a really interesting character choice to me when an awful person has a strict moral code they follow - who do they kill, why, ect. shame literally none of that was in the show
The issue was using voodoo in the first place! Voodoo is demonized by people, represented in media as evil and harmful.
Many people had pointed out, but out of touch others just said he's white he can't do voodoo
Because this is a show about hell, where evil people go.
You have a demon that does voodoo, that actively is doing voodoo to harm others.
This is the cultural appropriation. This is the harmful representation.
ok this might be partially my fault for not clarifying in the original post BUT - if you are talking about alastor, which i assume you are because i do not remember making any of my other rewritten characters practice voodoo - my alastor doesn't practice voodoo at all. its just been removed from his character full stop. if this is actually about something else that i just forgot abt lmk and ill make sure to fix it
The Hazbin Hotel fandom is guilty of cultural appropriation in regard to handling Alastorās Louisianan-Creole culture and his characterisation. Albeit Alastor has very little compelling characterisation to begin with.
Discussion ā¬ļøā¬ļøā¬ļø
How many times does Alastor mention jambalaya and his appreciation for the dish? Once. Barely even once - at the very end of the pilot episode that is barely considered canon anymore due to the official show contradicting established ideas from the pilot [ Eg. Lucifer Morningstarās characterisation ].
It should also be acknowledged that Vivsiepop had to change Alastor to identify as a Creole man because she was receiving backlash for his usage of voodoo magic, which I think should be explored more rather than flashy displays of nothing in his battles [ such as against Adam in Season 1, or The Vās in Season 2 ]
Due to the ashy complexions of her two explicitly black/mixed characters, the mention of jambalaya mustāve been to reference his culture more directly. However, because of this, a particular side of the fandom [ specifically on TikTok ] has done nothing but base his character around this one aspect of his dialogue.
Alastor, and other characters like him, should not be reduced down to a single cultural-characteristic of āenjoying and only talking about this foodā. I believe that this wouldnāt be avoidable if the script was changed to say another dish. The fandom would still find a way to make his personality revolve around their own limited understanding of creole culture;
influencing this representation to be used in the fan baseās discussions of Alastor and potentially other fandoms [ not to the same extent, but one character I can think of is Hajime Hinata from Danganronpa 2 and the fandomās obsession with him and orange juice. Note that this is not to the same extent and should not be treated as a similarity or a direct comparison, but rather as an acknowledgement of fandom and how they treat their characters from my own experience ]
Overall, Vivsiepop and the Hazbin Hotel fandom should be doing more to represent Alastorās culture to the extent that it isnāt forced but also not lazy and rushed.
as much as I sympathize with Angel & agree Charlie messed up with him, and the way she went about everything was wrong. Realistically Angel, along with everyone else honestly shouldāve considered the possibility of needing to address and open up about what you did to be condemned to Hell to begin with in order to redeem. That shouldnāt be on just Charlie.
which leads me to my second thing, everyone really recently just started getting more invested and open to the hotel idea. Everyone before was etheir doing it for their own goals, forced to or were in a tight spot. And because of that, no one really asked her any questions, checked what she had planned, and when a problem did occur, while they would call her out, didnāt get into things further to make sure things were understood. Topped with recent traumatic experiences from S1 & beign told of Sir Pās redemption on the spot, Charlieās behavior didnāt get better until they had to push back even more, and the situation getting much worse.
Not to mention, with her being Princess of Hell, Iām surprised a lot of the gang werenāt more curious about her own understanding of right & wrong, and just people in general. That alone about her isnāt really taken into consideration by those around her in how thatād affect her potentially negatively. Itās focused on connections, authority, which is sued but always executed badly because itās not just Charlie thatās messing up as royal, if anything sheās reflecting off a severely flawed/broken system. Weāve seen HB and how there structure and royalty act, she did NOT have alot of good role models, and thatās not even going into the questionable stuff implied about Lilith. Weāve seen Charlie worry about being too mean using her authority, just what did she see in other authority figures and Lilith, whoās she trying to simulate into believing that?
So much of her stuff isnāt taken seriously, including when she severely messes up. And while I can get them struggle to empathize or take her seriously with how she acts, her actions should be taken more seriously. The way she acts and does, shows a sign of someone who isnāt doing well themselves, and shouldnāt be left alone in a high power situation. So much of her pain and negative feelings are seen usually comical by others like her mourning of Sir P, or come off as self-centeredā¦.even when she has some reasons to feel hurt. Like being lied to, let down by someone who still neglected her, her loved ones going behind her back and making the same mistakes they complained about her doing. Lucifer was motivated by besting Al, who he drove away which isnāt brought up but Charlie thinks is all her faultā¦.and in the end, got more of the sympathy & Charlie left with more for he scorn. For crying out loud, during the rally, Lucifer was tip toeing away & tried to trick Charlie into thinking sheās was having a dream, leaving her to deal with what he tried with Vox.
Vaggi while supporting Charlie, she was still distant with the sinners & just started getting closer/more personally involved because Charlie wasnāt in the place to, was keeping a big secret from Charlie & only just started getting more assertive to her and pushing back. And I imagine she may have thought about needing to address pasts but because of her own, mightāve avoided bringing it up/avoided thinking about that until it came up. At the very least, itās def concerning she didnāt consider that herself.
Iām not saying I blame them for her actions/behavior or that Charlie isnāt responsible for her mistakes. but itās important to consider all the factors. If they had been asking questions sooner to make her re-evaluate sooner, been more firm with boundaries and weight of actions as well as get to know her more and her issues. That mightāve helped things from escalating sooner. At the very least, it wouldāve been good for them all, especially Charlie. Would it have been easy, porbaly not. But none of this redemption stuff is meant to be.
I also Imagien S3 is going to be going into some critical issues with Lucifer and Lilith, specifically how they raised Charlie, leading the gang to realize there was a lot more going on with Charlie than they realized and mightāve unintentionally overlooked some serious underlying issues. With how much s2 was about Charlieās mistakes, I hope s3 goes into everyone elseās.
I have a post talking more into Charlieās issues.
What do u think? Iād love to knowš
š¬ 0Ā Ā š 4Ā Ā ā¤ļø 22Ā Ā·Ā As frustrating as Charlie can be with her actions and behavior, part of me hopes/wishes it could be tied to her neglect/ab
I had this idea of making the actual Scylla a creepy eel monster, and this woman face is how Scylla used to look like before the transformation. This will most definitely not be the design I'll be using for animatics because it's really hard to draw lmao. Just some scary doodles
