Read me out
Draco Malfoy dates. Men and women, and all vaguely familiar to Greg. He just can not put his finger on why they feel familiar.
The looks always differ, yet the feeling he gets from them is reminiscent of something.
So when Harry Potter enters with his best friend to their usual dinner, the pieces start to click .
While at a glance, they shared nothing so plebian as hair color or even shared sense of style. No, he can see now what it was as he stares at the original.
It was the slightly crooked grin that is being sent Draco's way that gives Greg that feeling of deja vu.
" Harry Potter grins like mischief and daring," Draco once said, though he was three sheets to the wind Greg remembers.
He supposes that might be true to Draco, yet he always thought it looked more like a wolf pretending to be a sheep.
The two manuver through the crowd until they stand in front of him when Draco finally manages to look away from Potter.
"Greg, I'd like you to meet my partner, boyfriend, signaficant other or what have you." His hands waving around like he can catch the right word to describe Harry Potter standing sheepishly next to him.
Greg is only slightly perturbed and sticks out a hand for Potter to shake.
The inevitability of them seems so obvious as he stews on it.
He spends the evening watching them, bouncing thoughts/words between each other, like when they fought. Only now, the words won't cut. Potter or Harry, as he said to call him, still ends up with the last words with Draco blushing and looking away. Harry has that grin again.
Greg finally says when Harry gets up for the loo.
"So, all that whinging about Potter and his hair were for real then?"
"What in Merlins are you on about?" Draco's face is red as can be.
" You know, in school? You would go on and on about his hair and scar and really everything about him except I suppose you never did say anything about his smile. Not that you could really without sounding like you fancied the bloke. Suppose that's what you've been looking for, yes? "
"W-what, what has that got to do with anything?" Draco looks slightly confused.
"Really? Oh, you're serious?" Greg asks.
"No, that's my dead cousin," Draco deadpans.
"Never mind all that. I meant I am happy for you." Greg does not want to hear all the ways his friend can wax on about Harry Potter's smile if given a chance now. If his hogwarts rants were anything to go by, they don't have that type of time. So he simply cuts to the heart of the matter in which his friend is happy.
The two are startled when a shot is slammed in front of Draco by none another the devil himself.
Grinning like a manic he leans into Draco's face
"What do you say, Malfoy? Scared?"
There goes that grin again.
This Greg takes as his cue to leave. He may be happy for Draco, but he is not up for the aggressive flirting going on tonight. Greg wonders if it's just the honeymoon stage people talk about. Then remembers, he and Vince also thought their friend would get over being rejected by one person in first year. He did not, in fact, get over it. He really should know better.
Excusing himself, he leaves the two to themselves after hugging Draco goodbye.
Harry pats him on the back, thanking him for not leaving at the sight of him.
Laughing, Greg just smirks at him, making Harry falter slightly.
"I dont think I've ever seen you smile before"
He hums then leans in, "Bit of advice. Draco has a thing about smiles. He likes them to be genuine." He grew up in a Manor with enough insincere ones. "You can always tell what's going on with by his smiles."
"Why are you telling me this?"
"Because he also judges others by theirs. When you walked in, the both of you were grinning at each like the Sun came out in London. Suppose I'm grateful that he finally got the smile he was looking for."
Harry nods, his eyes going distant like he is slotting things into place.
"That is frighteningly insightful"
"What? You think I dont know my best mate?"
Blushing, Harry rushes to correct himself. " No, no! I honestly don't know where I was going with that thought, so just forget it. I just remembered sixth year and well its all sorts of off yes, but Draco smiled at me in the bathroom when he fell and I suppose I dont know how to feel about that. Now I'm rambling to you when we just met again and I'm trying to date him, properly as opposed to just shagging which you probably didn't need to know about. Merlin just punch now."
Greg can't help himself when he laughs at the poor bloke.
"Don't overthink it. Just be happy"
"Yea, alright. Think I can handle that"
