I have a client who communicates exclusively via Microsoft Word.

If she has something to tell me, I’ll receive an email with nothing in the body, but a Word doc attached. That’s where she writes her message.

Whenever she wants to email me a photo, she does so via an empty Word doc with said photo set as its background.

But my favorite thing was the first time I witnessed her visiting a website. She had me spell the URL (“W… W… W… dot…”) and with my own two eyes I watched her type it into Word, made it a hyperlink, and Ctrl click it to go there.

I was so fascinated I didn’t even say anything.

In case the links ever go down, Soldier F is David Cleary, a British paratrooper.

He murdered two Irish people in Derry, occupied Northern Ireland, who were demanding their civil rights on what was later called Bloody Sunday, January 30, 1972. He wounded four more. In total 13 irish demonstrators demanding equal rights were murdered by British paratroopers that day.

So she actually said that she does not see the appeal in Senshi at all and that the panty shots weren't intended to be horny - she just has a neighbor who looks kind of like him and does laundry in his underwear. Which she finds kind of weird and offputting, and put into his character to be funny.

But that's the thing. She doesn't exaggerate or grotesqueify or alter people's bodies to fit some standard. (Except insofar as she draws different species differently, and those are exquisitely practiced to ensure they have the same diversity of appearances that humans do.) She just presents people exactly as they are, complexities and oddities and all.

It just so happens that when you present people exactly as they are, what you present will be beautiful and alluring to many. Even the things you yourself might find weird and offputting. Honestly I think it's a touching example of how you don't have to see the beauty in everyone for the beauty to be there, simple honesty is enough to let the wonder of people's humanity shine through.

The thing that fascinates me about janky RPG Maker horror games is that there's a specific level of jank that invites audience participation. Many well-regarded examples of the type do not actually achieve their intended experiences of play, but they get close enough that that experience can be constructed with active player buy-in. As a player you can of course break any game by going out of your way to refuse to cooperate, but when you're put in the position of needing to go out of your way not to break the game, you become a sort of co-author in a way that games which are actually functional typically don't permit.

There's a certain satisfaction in being able to clearly see that the scenery is made of cardboard and taking special care not to tip it over because you're genuinely curious where the game's author is going with this.
