It’s February 1st, happy World Hijab Day! World Hijab Day empowers women who are sometimes viewed as out of this world. “Why would you want to wear that?” is a question hijabis hear more than often. This day acknowledges the lifestyle millions of women worldwide chose for. New York resident Nazma Khan came up with World Hijab Day to invite others to walk in the shoes of hijabis for one day. This way, she wanted to foster religious tolerance and understanding from both non-hijabi Muslims as non-Muslims. I give you 10 reasons why we should all celebrate this day. The awesome 12-year-old who wants to be the first Muslim president

Yusuf Dayur, a 12-year-old from Minnesota, is getting a lot of attention for posting a YouTube response to Republican candidate Ben Carson, who said he couldn’t support a Muslim as president of the United States.

In 2009, Dalia Mogahed became the first hijabi in the White House, when she was appointed to a position in President Barack Obama’s administration.

In early April 2009, Obama signed an executive order setting up a new body at the White House called the “Office of Religious Partnerships” to support religious institutions and strengthen inter-faith dialogue and government ties. Dalia Mogahed became a part of this administration and received a seemingly impossible task: to improve the United States’ perception towards Muslims. At the end of her term, she had the chance to formulate recommendations on Muslim outreach in an advisory report to the President. (Read more about Dalia right here)

The U.K. just showed the world exactly how to respond to a refugee crisis

On Wednesday, images of a Syrian boy who washed up on the Turkish shore went viral after he drowned during a failed attempt to flee his war-torn country. While some debated the ethics of disseminating such photographs, one outcome is undeniably positive: The world is reacting.

As of Thursday morning, a U.K. government and parliament petition entitled “Accept more asylum seekers and increase support for refugee migrants in the U.K.” had more than 190,000 signatures.
