She didn’t want him to see her like that, but at least Bruce wasn’t the one who was home. It was easier to lie to Alfred. “No one.” Maddie replied, letting her brunette hair fall over the black eye. “I caught an elbow in gym playing volleyball.”

It was probably easier to lie to Alfred because she had him wrapped around her little finger. She always had, really. So he’s overprotective and easily worries about her, but it was because she meant so much to him. He didn’t let her go with just that excuse, instead stopping her with a hand. Reaching out, he gently took her chin in one hand so he could examine her face more closely. Already, it was beginning to bruise. “That must have been quite the volleyball match,” he retorted dryly, but it was a bit more subdued than usual because of his concern. Still, it was obvious he didn’t entirely believe her.

Of course Maddie wasn’t supposed to see Alfred like this. It was very late at night, and he had done his best to sneak back into the manor undetected. Unfortunately, it would seem his luck had completely run out. When he turned a corner, heading toward the kitchen… there she was, and the lights came on. “I’m fine, Maddie,” he reassured her. “I assure you it looks worse than it actually is.” Oh, it would definitely be sore tomorrow, and already the aches and pains were creeping in, but he’d be damned if he’d let her see that.

OOC: Death of a loved one.

I know I haven’t done much with this tumblr lately anyway, but I wanted to apologize for not being around much. One of my oldest friends lost his fight to cancer recently, and I’ve been a little out of it. He was married to one of my best friends, so understandably she and their family are having a rough time right now. Thoughts and prayers are always appreciated. Be patient with me, and I promise to return eventually.
