Look at that detail - Shrek and Farquaad have subtle stubble, Shrek has liver spots on his scalp, characters have pores on their skin, Shrek’s ears here even have a subtle transparency like real skin and cartilage. His linen tunic has scruffy and rough edges and lint bobbing on the shoulders. Shrek doesn’t just represent a step forward, it represented a BIG jump. Look back at the early 3D Pixar films and you’ll see a progression in what 3D software could effectively render - first plastic toys, then chitinous insects, then scaly or leathery monsters with an enterprising look into the astoundingly complicated field of hair and fur. Shrek is a joke now, but it revolutionised the field of animation. Shrek finally prompted the Academy to add an Award for Best Animated Feature; after Beauty and the Beast lost Best Picture a few years before, Shrek was the point they could no longer dismiss the art and effort that go into animated films.

Update: Chicken Run (2000) was actually what prompted the Best Animated Feature category to be created, but Shrek was the first winner, and even now represents a paradigm shift in the animation industry

The last few years have been extremely difficult for me and my immediate family. Medical problems, car problems, and multiple deaths have made our already delicate financial situation even worse. My dad and I both work low paying jobs with no benefits and together we can barely make ends meet. We’re desperately trying to move back to our home state, so that we can be closer to what’s left of our family and be happier. Going home has been mine and my dad’s dream for years. Now that mom has passed away there’s nothing keeping us here except a lack of funds. I’ve been working very hard to save every bit of money that I can, but because of auto expenses, progress has been slow. Fortunately, the truck should be fine for the foreseeable future since it’s most recent repair. Fingers crossed for no more setbacks. This move has been my dream for a really long time and I’m desperate to make it work. If you’re able to help at all, it would be deeply appreciated!
