60 years ago today, the Penguin returns in âFine Finny Fiendsâ & âBatman Makes the Scenesâ to end the first season. Unlike his previous 2 misadventures, Penguin is not pretending to be reformed. Rather, he has his eyes set upon âfeathering his nestâ by absconding with the annual charity donation given by numerous Multimillionaires who select a worthy charity to donate to that year. The Multimillionaires have a bathing suit beauty burst out of a cake to end their annual dinner and toss their $1,000,000 cash donations apiece at her.
We begin with Alfred shopping for âcut rate caviarâ, answering an advertisement flyer that directed him to a Fish Store. A sandwich board sign outside claims, âSpecial Today CAVIARâ. Its windows also have this special painted on them. Alfred needs a pound of caviar per guest with 20 guests planned to attend a rehearsal dinner for the annual Multimillionairesâ charity dinner.
It turns out this store is a merely a storefront made up to snare Alfred. It is run by a Penguin Henchman, Octopus. 2 other Henchmen, Shark & Swordfish, are disguised as women customers sampling the caviar. When Alfred goes to the barrel with the caviar to sample it, its overhead umbrella collapses on top of him, trapping him underneath it. Octopus takes an umbrella and expels Penguin Gas underneath the protective folds of that umbrella. Alfred is unconscious.
Shark is portrayed by a cousin of Charlton Heston. Swordfish is portrayed by the brother of actor James Stacy.
Chief OâHara reports to Commissioner Gordon that several witnesses saw Alfred being carried to a waiting car by âhoodlumsâ who also had umbrellas. An umbrella was left at the scene. Its tip smelt like caviar. Gordon concludes the Penguin is behind this kidnapping and calls Batman to apprise him that Alfred is the victim.
After discussing the situation with Gordon and OâHara. Robin states thereâs been no ransom demand yet. Batman believes Alfred had been kidnapped due to his involvement with the Multimillionaires Annual Award Dinner. A dozen multimillionaires donate $1,000,000 cash to a chosen charity. That rehearsal dinner is slated to have the dozen select which charity shall receive its $12,000,000 cash donation this year. Alfred is the major domo responsible for the Annual Awards Dinner eveningâs meal and festivities.
Batman notes that it is not common knowledge that Alfred has this role. Bruce Wayne faithfully attends this dinner. The location of this dinner has always been kept very secret to avoid publicity and for security purposes to deter any potential crimes. Robin realizes that if Alfred oversees the food and service then he also knows where this dinner will be held. Thatâs what the Penguin is after so he can get his felonious flippers on the $12,000,000.
Even though the Batmobile has almost always been shown parking on the street in front of Police Headquarters, OâHara almost forgot to call the parking lot to clear all exits for the Batmobile.
Penguin and his Fine Finny Fiends have a waterfront lair where Alfred is kept inside a shark cage. Shark uses an umbrella with an extended point that is actually a harpoon to constantly poke Alfred hoping this torment will result in Alfred talking about where the dinner will be held. Penguin knows Alfred has not yet been told where it will be held. Penguin puts Alfred in his Penguin Box to teach him âhow to waddle like a Penguinâ by brainwashing him.
This part of Penguinâs plot is to have Alfred report later when the secret location has been told to him. âNever! It simply isnât done to betray oneâs master!â Alfredâs valiant attempt to resist come to naught. Alfred will not remember his kidnapping but will remember the time and place of the dinner to reveal it when Penguin asks. He will also remember the charity chosen to receive the $12,000,000. However, a side effect will be a twitching of his right eye.
Penguin also plans to have Finella, his Moll, to impersonate whichever charityâs gorgeous representative had been chosen to receive the $12,00,000 donation and is already clad in her bathing suit sheâd wear at the dinner.
The Dynamic Duo race to the false Fish Store which had been searched âstem to sternâ by the GCPD. The Fish Store has been cleared out of everythingââexcept the very flyer that had drawn Alfred to it. Its interior is completely empty. Even the various store fixtures have been removed. The âthoroughnessâ of the GCPD somehow overlooked a crumpled piece of paper in plain sight on the floor.
Examining the flyer, Batman calls attention to the name of its proprietor, âKnott A. Fishâ. âIf heâs not a fish,âŠâ, Batman queries Robin. Robin replies, âOf course,âŠhe must be the Penguin!â The Bat-Phone inside the Batmobile rings, signaling the Duo to leave the store and carefully cross the street to the Batmobile. Gordon claims Alfred has not been kidnapped. Alfred has returned âsafe as a dollarâ back to Wayne Manor.
The Duo race back to the Bat-Cave to talk with Alfred. Alfred claims he had purchased the 20-pounds of caviar through the Iranian Embassy as usual. Alfredâs morning coat reeked of caviar so he left it out to air dry. Alfred flatly denies he had been kidnapped. Alfredâs right eye twitched.
Batman decides to use the Memory Bat-Bank on Alfred. Alfred is asked to look at some photos to see if he can recognize anyone. The first one shown is William Dozier (Mugshot #362436), the showâs Executive Producer, followed by Howie Horwitz (Mugshot # 382235), Producer. Dozier is called a smooth criminal that can be the most dangerous by Alfred. Horwitz is someone Alfred is glad to say is a total stranger.
Shark (Mugshot # 2598467) is an âinteresting appellationâ. Alfred denies seeing him before yet his right eye twitches again for the third time. Octopus (Mugshot #1824113) is next shown. âA rogue!â, followed by another denial. A fourth twitch.
Finally, Penguin (Mugshot # 9215143) is shown. âA fiend! Obviously, a perfect fiend!â Alfred asks what his name is. Alfred denies knowing Penguin followed by a fifth twitch. (NOTICE the numerical progression of these 5 mugshots: Penguin has the highest which means he is a far more recent criminal apprehended than the 2 Henchmen shown and that the showâs producers have significantly lower numbers).
Alfred excuses him to prepare for the guests due to arrive for the Multimillionairesâ Rehearsal Dinner being held above in Wayne Manor. âA good but,er never forgets!â, Alfred says as he realizes he has to immediately pop in the crabmeat canapĂ©s into the oven. The Multimillionaires, the ladies, representing the various charities, Aunt Harriet and Dick Grayson attend this dinner. We learn that Bruce Wayneâs great grandfather had founded Skull and Bones at Yale University.
One of the Multimillionaires talking with Bruce Wayne bites into one of the crab canapés and discovers a fishhook inside. Alfred apologizes profusely claiming it must have fallen out of his morning coat he wore earlier that day. Bruce and Dick excuse themselves from the dinner to race down to the Bat-Cave to analyze this clue. (Aunt Harriet must be been horrified at this breach of social propriety, abandoning his dinner guests, especially before dinner had been served!)
âA fishhook! That must mean the waterfront!â Analyzing the map of the waterfront that runs for 146 miles, the Fish Storeâs proprietor, âKnott A. Fishâ is entered into the Bat-Computer to narrow their search. The North Pier is shown but that has George North as its proprietor. The South Pier shows its proprietor as âKnott A. Fishâ. Naturally, a Penguin would be found on the South alien as Penguins are found in Antarctica and not at the North Pole. the Duo race to the South Pier. Robin fears Penguin might be prepared for their arrival.
Penguin is indeed prepared for a âsurprise visitâ from the Duo. Waiting outside, Penguin, Shark and Octopus, observe the Duoâs arrival. Penguin tells his Henchmen that he knew the Duo would be coming as he had planted the fishhook. Octopus quivers at the thought that itâs the finish for their felonious follies. Penguin counters his âquaking cohortsâ that itâs the finish for the Dynamic Duo and heads back inside the lair and are each armed with umbrellas. They quickly conceal themselves to ambush the Duo.
Upon entering the Duo discover a quacking toy penguin atop a table. Suddenly, âa forest of umbrellasâ shoot JP from the floor and open up. The villains attack. The Bat-Fight starts off with the umbrella armed Henchmen getting disarmed fairly quickly. Batman casts a fishing line onto the back of Octopus and reels him away from a struggling Robin. Penguin uses his umbrella handle as a hook around Robinâs neck to pull him up against a wall where a giant fishhook appears to pin Robin against the wall.
The 3 Henchmen overpower Batman and Cary him over to the wall where he is also pinned with another giant fishhook. Penguin quickly gases the Duo. Shark observes that the Duo are still breathing and is about to smash an umbrella over Batmanâs head when Penguin says he has a better idea. âWeâll remedy that by putting them in the Vacuum Tankâ. Octopus says, âNot the Vacuum Tank, Boss! It ainât human!â The Vacuum Tank is labeled Vacuum Room and is the same room where the Penguin Box had been used on Alfred.
Nevertheless, the Vacuum Tank is the cliffhanger. Itâs filled with dozens of inflated balloons. As the air is vacuumed out of the tank, the air depletion will first cause those balloons to burst. Once those balloons have each bust, all that remains is to vacuum out what little air is still left inside so the Duo suffocates.
Shark & Octopus man the Gigantic Reversing Bellows that hasten the vacuuming. Penguin smashes Shark overhead with his umbrella to get the Henchmen working faster on these bellows. The balloons inside begin to burst one by one. Thereâs an Air Indicator monitoring the air levels inside the Vacuum Tank. Full of - Enough for all - Elephant - Gorilla - Football player - Dog - Cat - Mouse - Butterfly- and finally No Air at all. The Air Indicator looks like a giant thermometer.
Then air indicator reads âMouseâ when we resume this cliffhanger. It needs to drop below âButterfly â. An impatient Penguin wants the bellows to be working even harder when he canât fathom how the Duo are still breathing. âButterfly, Batman! Butterfly! Watch the bouncing balloons! Going! Going! Gone!â
When the last balloon bursts and the Air Indicator reads âNoneâ, Penguin believes the Duo have expired. The villains celebrate. Penguin wants them to establish an alibi before they return to destroy the evidence, including getting rid of the bodies.
Batman had managed to cut his bonds by using his Bat-Knife. He then used his Emergency Tank of Bat-Oxygen in his Utility Belt which had quickly replenished the air inside the Vacuum Tank once the last balloon burst. Playing opossum, once Batman realized Penguin had fled, he resuscitated Robin and reported to Gordon in his office.
Obviously when the Penguin returned after establishing an alibi, the villains would discover the Duo escaped. Batman wants to trap Penguin red-handed with the $12,000,000 at the Multimillionaires Annual Award Dinner. Gordon volunteers to ask Bruce Wayne about where this dinner would be held. Bruce reveals it will be held in the Captainâs dining salon of the flagship of Wayne Steamship Company, the S.S. Gotham Neptune.
Gordon relays that information to Batman. Batman then asks Gordon to give specific instructions seeking the Multimillionairesâ cooperation to Bruce which he does. Inside the Bat-Cave, Batman reveals to Alfred the location for the Dinner. âWord has been leaked via the underworld grapevineâ that the dinner will be held at Wayne Manor. âBut it will not be held there, instead it will actually be heldâ in the Captainâs dining salon aboard the S.S. Gotham Neptune.â A twitch of the right eye. âThe Penguin and his criminal cohortsâ will get apprehended at Wayne Manor by the GCPD. Batman and Robin will attend the dinner as a precaution, taking the places of Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson.
Batman also reveals that the chosen charity this year is Miss Natural Resources. Another twitch of his eye. Robin has a horrible thought. âCan we trust Alfred?â Batman replies he trusts Alfred implicitly.
Alfred is tending house cleaning when Penguin calls to extract the desired information. It is clear that Penguin is calling from his lair on the South Pier. Alfred repeats what has been leaked via the underworld grapevine the false location of Wayne Manor. When Alfred as, âbutâ, Penguin pushes for the actual location. After Alfred is compelled to reveal the time and place of the dinner along with the chosen charity, Penguin orders Alfred to forget. Alfred does. He believes that there was no one on the other end of the phone. His twitching also ceases.
The real Miss Natural Resources has an assistant helping her get ready. Instead of Bruce Wayne escorting her to the Dinner, Batman would be. Batman is en route up via the elevator. Meantime, Penguin, Shark and Octopus descend via umbrellas from the rooftop onto the outside terrace where Finella had been secluded. The villains quickly race in and Penguin Gas the pair. They quickly take the unconscious pair out of sight while Finella gets the Miss Natural Resources sash and fur coat on with Penguinâs help.
When Batman arrives, Finella meets him at door. Rather than invite him inside where Batman might be able to detect some lingering small of Penguin Gas, she claims itâs drafty and they could put on her orchid corsage inside the elevator.
The Multimillionaires Dinner seems to be going along fine. Batman and Robin are at the center of the head table.
Just before the giant cake is brought in, Penguin, Shark and Octopus are seen through the portholes sneaking about outside the Captainâs dining salon. Batman realizes he needs to keep the festivities moving and asks Alfred to have the cake brought in. Finella pops out of the cake and the Multimillionaires begin tossing their $1,000,000 donation at her.
From a porthole window, Penguin gestures to Finella to take out the umbrella attached to a large hidden tank of Penguin Gas. Going from one side to another, Finella manages to gas all, including The Duo and Alfred.
Penguin, Shark and Octopus enter and begin gathering all the millions. Placing them inside Penguinâs opened umbrella. The Duo are unconscious at the head table. Penguin reveals that they will head back to the South Pier. Shark reminds him that the cops know about the pier. Penguin says thatâs the last place theyâll look as they had found it empty so they would expect that to be the last place theyâd look. When the villains flee, Finella forgets her fur coat.
Upon arriving back at the South Oier lair, Swordfish had been stationed to ensure the GCPD or the Duo wouldnât head over there and lets the other villains inside. The 3 Henchmen are extremely anxious for their cut., making their mouths water for the haul. Penguin tosses a few hundreds as âhors dâoeuvresâ for them while he opens the wall safe to store the loot. Octopus plans to go to the South Seas to open a school for pirates. Penguin plans to use his giant share to âescalate the cause of crimeâ by bribing, burrowing, stealing and connivingâ. Penguin has unlocked the safe and opened it, but hasnât open put his giant share inside it.
Finellaâs conscious has her regretting her participation in this heist. Exclaiming, âWhoâs going to save our natural resources now?â, the Duo leap out from the safe. The Dynamic Duo prepared with Anti-Penguin Gas Pills to fool the villains at the S.S. Gotham Neptune and get over to the South Pier before the Villains returned. They had managed to enter the lair, crack the safeâs combination, open it and conceal themselves inside without Swordfish noticing somehow. Penguin tries to gas the Duo again but Finella misdirects his umbrella so he gets gassed instead.
The climatic Bat-Fight results in the villains getting their comeuppances. Like the Riddlerâs Museum capture, each villain will get individual comeuppances.
Shark battles Robin with a giant three-pronged fishhook. Batman grabs a small net to out over his head that distracts Shark, releasing his grip on the fishhook which Robin promptly uses to push Shark inside the safe where he is locked inside.
Swordfish had been knocked out onto the floor after he got his head smashed with a crate.
Octopus kept onto Batman and pounded constantly on his back. Batman leads him over to the front of the shark cage. Batman gets Octopusâ tentacles off him and gut punches Octopus inside the shark cage where he falls down onto the small seat unconscious and gets locked inside.
Robin had managed to grab Penguin by his tuxedoâs coat tails. Robin manages to toss Penguin into a large net that when Penguin lands inside it his weight causes the net to rise and suspend the caught Penguin hoisted and suspended from the ceiling quacking.
The Multimillionaires Annual Award Dinner had been rescheduled to be held at Wayne Manor. Apparently, part of Batmanâs instructions to the Multimillionaires were to pretend the dinner at the Captainâs dining salon was actually a ruse to snare Penguin. Finella is allowed to attend even though she has been sentenced to Prison. Gordon escorts her. Finella has been given a fur coat by the Multimillionaires as a reward for her help in capturing Penguin.
This ends the first season. The movie, âBatmanâ will premiere late July.
