Today’s intended reading is Nabiel Kanan’s “Exit - `Under the Sun,’” published by Caliber Comics in 1996, and prior that that as individual issues beginning in 1990, achieving award status in 1993, during which “Exit” won the Comic Creators Guild Award. I began reading this a few months ago and lost track of where I’d put the book, so I only got a few chapters in originally, but flipping through I recall a clear sense of individual characters existing in a vivid world conveyed successfully on each page. Experimenting with handheld time-lapse videography on the iPhone 6 as I walked the NYC High Line from one end to the other, ending in Hudson Yards at “Vessel,” the mile-long weaving of stairways to essentially nowhere, which seem like it would do surrealist artist MC Escher proud. This was my first visit to either attraction and sadly Vessel was closed until further notice due to storm clouds rolling in from Jersey and the structure being made of metal and all. Otherwise it’s free to walk up with ticket. I learned that if I want to showcase something, giving enough pause so a person can at least briefly take in a single shot before the video moves on, I’ll need to try holding the camera steady for at least 30 seconds without movement, perhaps longer. I thought ten or fifteen seconds and a sllllowwwww pan and/or tilt might be enough, but it was clearly not enough. It must’ve taken about 15-20 minutes to walk 1.45 miles, with stops, while filming only turned into 21 seconds of time-lapse video. Plus I got my damn finger in the way a bunch of times, so I need to be way more cognizant of that next go around. After the “Stranger Things” event at the LEGO Store in Rockefeller Center, I hear chants from what sounds like a large crowd. Mark comments it might be protesters at one of the nearby Drumpf buildings. Around the corner, turning into Rockefeller Plaza comes a small, yet powerful contingent of trans folx and allies, each holding signs with the names of PEOPLE. These are DEAD friends and neighbors and lovers and family who are gone, likely because they were MURDERED, killed by hateful actions of people I have little empathy for, but whom I recognize as part of a fucked up, destructive system. Indeed, ALL LIVES do NOT matter until trans lives matter and Black lives and brown lives, and so many other maligned and marginalized lives. If YOU don’t understand this, I invite you to consider some internal reflection about your attitudes and why you hold the beliefs you do. Do you have compassion for other people who want to live and love and be who their god(s) or Mother Nature made them to be? If you know me and call me friend or family, if you see MY humanity then I beseech you to recognize that I fall under the umbrella of the term “transgender.” I don’t conform in a number of ways to so-called traditional gender roles, don’t always wear my assigned clothing, or particularly care for “male” pronouns. Also, one of my partners is soon to have top surgery and at worst, they might be seen as a “faggy guy”, which comes with its dangers, but at least won’t be as likely to be murdered if they’d been assigned male at birth and transitioned to feminine or female identifying. I have friends who have penises AND breasts. I have friends with breasts who wish they didn’t and also wish they had biological penises. Wait, fuck that. They wish they had gloriously hard and wonderful cocks to fuck with and be sucked, to enjoy with wild, consensual abandon, the power and pleasures of sexual congress. The scientific vocabulary is important, but so is the poetry of the human experience, as varied as it is. Sometimes I wish I had a different body, different parts. Sitting in the living room I hear what sounds like dry wood cracking, thinking somebody’s tearing dead branches off the tree. “They’re Here!!!” “SPRING ‘95 TOYS - in stores now!” “Later this year be on the watch for fall 95 Spawn Toy Line and the brand new Youngblood and Wetworks lines!” Before there was McFarlane Toys... Before toys were basically tiny, yet beautiful plastic statues and the visual quality of most toys improved... There was... the alliterative Todd Toys! Featuring your favorite Image Comics anti-heroes and villains ...and maybe even one character we could call an actual hero (Badrock, formerly known as Bedrock, before some potential legal scuffle with Hanna-Barbera that never came to be because of Liefeld’s forward thinking changed the name of that stoned kid turned anthropomorphic rock being...). Spawn, who was not wearing underwear, hence the commando status; Angela, a hellspawn-hunting angel of sorts who would later turn out to be Thor’s sibling in Marvel Comics’ Asgardian realm...; Pilot Spawn, because you don’t drive a boat, you pilot it; and the impossible-to-find and I know this because I was at ToysRUs all the damn time, devil of McFarlane’s mind: Malebolgia, who I was never gonna pay $40 for at the local comic book store on Long Island! This second series of Spawn action figures was rounded out with two cool figures from the @robliefeld Youngblood comics series: Chapel (because you need to get married somewhere) and the ever-lovin’ blue-eyed Badrock, probably one of the heaviest action figures at the time, plus two spring-loaded shoulder missiles. When you go to your local KTA grocery store on Hawai’i’s Big Island and get excited about a claim of a whole section of postcards, but find there’s only a small display on the side of an end-cap an aisle or two away and it’s not as significant as you’d hoped... Still, KTA is a pleasant supermarket with some cost-effective coupons and sales, and with good-hearted workers who will run and grab another carton of eggs if one of yours turns out to be cracked. The journey into the valley concluded with some meditative moments sitting on some driftwood, facing the vast North Pacific as the breeze danced with moisture, feeding these dear shelf mushrooms. I was told one could hike, with a full day ahead of them, up the next set of cliffs into the next valley over, and again into the third valley beyond. The day before our vessel’s engine had troubles. Rather than be stranded, we turned back for a checkup and repairs for Hokulani. @quercus_pal and I rebooked for the following morning, Sea Paradise waiving the difference in cost since we would then have to get a room for the night on the Kona side of the Big Island. This turned out to be fortuitous in numerous ways, allowing us to snorkel with white tip reef sharks, to see Spinner Dolphins play with other vessels in the Marine Sanctuary of Kealakekua Bay, and to be the playmates of these lovely Bottle-Nosed Dolphins who saw as back to port. The crew of the trimaran Hokulani were fantastic and we recommend their tours.
