Zane pressed his lips together into a thin line as he eyed Harley. He’d love to get out of the town, even if it was only for a few hours. And he knew Harley really wanted to with him. “If you promise you’ll be careful, then maybe.” Zane said, wrapping an arm around the other’s waist and pulling him towards him. “But I swear, if you try anything remotely dangerous, I’ll drag your ass back to down myself.” It would be different if Harley was mortal all the time. Then he’d know how fragile the human body really was. But Harley had a power that made it to where he wasn’t able to get hurt and therefore, Zane was worried the other male wouldn’t look out for himself as well as others might. 

“Earned something?” Zane asked, chuckling lowly. “You have to do more than dancing if you want to earn anything from me, Hidalgo. You know that.” He teased the other male, lifting a hand up to run his fingers over Harley’s cheek. “I didn’t realize you even wanted a kiss.” Zane smirked as he leaned towards him, his lips inches from the other. “I went ninety. I’m not going the full hundred.”

“I pinky promise I’ll be careful. I’ll even do a blood promise if it means more to you.” Harley teased, a grin on his lips as Zane wrapped his arms around him. “I mean, what classes as dangerous? We gotta have a little fun on the outside, no?” He questioned, the grin turning more into a smirk now as his eyes looked over the blood bender. The immortal appreciated the concern, not many people showed it for him. Usually his promises on being careful were complete bullshit, but with Zane he actually tried to keep them, not wanting the other to have the burden of looking after him if something bad happened.

“Oh?” He asked, brow raising at the others teasing, “Like what, Patel?” Breath caught in his throat at the soft touch from the other, quickly closing the gap between them, lips crashing against Zane’s. “I feel like we’ve not done this in months.” He murmured against the others lips, tongue brushing against the blood benders bottom lip.

“Maybe you should train with people who aren’t your friends then?” Kristen suggested, her eyes tilted to the side. “I wouldn’t mind training with you sometime. I can imitate any animal. You could get fairly hurt. But considering your power, I doubt it would do much to you.” The movie star shrugged her shoulders. “Let me know at all if you’re interested.” She pulled out her phone and then handed it to him. “Put your number in and text me anytime.” 

Kristen took a long gulp of her alcoholic beverage, finishing it off and then reaching into the cooler to pull out a beer. “Yeah. I’ve seen you there before.” Kristen said with a smirk. “You’re probably the best dancer I’ve seen. Most people are extremely awkward or don’t dance at all.” Kristen was being honest. She liked when people acknowledged her own talents so why not do it to someone else? “Call bullshit then.” She waved a hand away. “I’m just wanting to have a little bit of fun. If I pass out on that couch–” She pointed towards the plush couch near them. “Then that’s my decision.” 

“I do, sometimes.” Harley shrugged, though he preferred to train with those he trusted to stop when he’d had enough and not just carry on because they knew he could heal from anything. “I mean, it would. I’d just heal from it.” The immortal pointed out, biting down on his lower lip as he let out a sigh, putting his number into her phone. He didn’t like to get annoyed at people for it, because it was his own mentality too, but just because he could heal from anything didn’t mean things didn’t still hurt, and that it didn’t have affects. 

At Kristen’s words, and her smirk, Harley couldn’t help the blush that came to his cheeks, chuckling softly. “I mean, it’s usually just to impress a guy, but thanks.” Liar, it was for the attention too, but he wouldn’t admit that one so easily. “That sounds fair enough.”

“That is because he’s a danger to himself and everyone else. I suppose anyone could fall into that category but the difference is that he can’t help it. There is no way to control a force of nature like that except for the bracelet.” He knew enough about Harley to understand the slightly jealous undertones to his voice. Part of Brian was tempted to give the guy a bracelet, and study the aftermath, but giving out bracelets was well above Brian’s jurisdiction. “It seems we have the perfect deal then.” He smirked again and gave a nod at his newest subject. “Two then. Three at a stretch. Next one is on me though, as a thank you. But that’s as nice as I get.”

“Yeah well I’m sure I could come up with a reason as to why it would be good for me to have it in the long run, but that’s too much effort to delve into with a non-psychologist.” Harley snorted, drinking from his beer as he looked over the other. “And psychologists are too much fucking effort in themselves.” At that comment, he finished his drink. “Well if you’re buying this round, I’ll have the best tequila this place has, and I’ll have it double and on the rocks.”

“That’s probably true. Although, I doubt the government would add such a building in either of the towns.” It was an assumption, of course. “And then there’s the fact that you have to have people to pay to even run the strip club. I don’t see many people around here that would be interested in that.” Zane pressed his lips together into a thin line and shrugged. “It’s unfortunate, but it is what it is.” 

The corner of his lip twitched into a small smile as he felt Harley’s arms wrap around him and his lips move against his ear. “A trip out together?” Zane asked, turning to watch as Harley pulled away with a smirk. Zane didn’t really like leaving the town, even if they could. His power was part of who he was and he didn’t like losing it with the negation bracelet that the government forced them to wear on the outside. “And what if something happens?” Zane asked as he eyed Harley closely. “We won’t have our powers to protect us.” While he wasn’t against it, Zane still liked to weigh out the pros and cons.

“I guess it’ll just be a pipe dream, then.” Harley joked, laughing softly, hands moving to grab Zane’s hands. “Come on, Z. I know you don’t like it, but it can be fun. It can be what we make it, you know? I’ll be careful, you won’t have to worry about me. We’ll have fun, but keep a low profile still. We can handle ourselves without our power, Zane. It’s one night. Twenty four hours. I know we can get pretty messy, but I’m sure won’t make enough trouble to get us into any real trouble, right?” 

Harley sighed, moving closer again as he wrapped his hands around Zane’s shoulders, fingers moving through the back of his hair before tugging softly. “How about we talk about it in the morning? Don’t you think I’ve earned something for my dancing, hmm? Do I really gotta beg you to kiss me?”

“One song.” Zane promised with a nod as he moved towards the DJ booth. It was definitely not set up the way he would have. The blood bender snorted and rolled his eyes at his best friend as walked up to the booth. “Push it by Salt-N-Pepa.” He informed the DJ. “Now.” He was stern about it, eyeing the other male until he nodded and began changing the song. It was then that he finally turned and moved back to Harley. 

He raised his eyebrows as Harley began to dance around him closely. Zane couldn’t help but snort at the other. He knew that Harley was being serious, and this was something he enjoyed doing, but Zane just had a hard time taking the other seriously when he was moving his hips in such a way that most couldn’t. “So you’re saying Lake Grimstone should have their own strip club?” He asked, the smirk remaining on his face as he watched Harley.

“Well it’d tip better than the bartender gig.” Harley replied, a small laugh leaving his lips. They were joking, but still, part of him were serious. If it would make him money, and it was something he would likely enjoy, then sure he’d go for it. It wasn’t like he wasn’t physically fit enough to perform the demanding job. Though there likely weren’t enough people in Grimstone that would actually go to a strip club, so it remained only a dream in his head. 

Harley’s arms wrapped around Zane’s waist, pulling the other towards him, “You could be the DJ there instead and have the pleasure of watching me every night.” he murmured against the others ear, lips grazing his jaw as he pulled away with a smirk, letting go of the blood bender. “We should arrange a trip out together. I still have all my hours left for this month. We can go somewhere where no one knows us, just have some time away and have some real fun that this town can’t offer.” Harley had only gone out a handful of times, when he felt he needed to get away. One of the last times that happened he found a friend who ran underground raves where the drink and certain drugs were free-flowing as long as you paid entry. Of course, you could buy more if you wanted something harder, or wanted to take some outside of the rave but ever since then, he’d wanted to experience that with Zane. Plus, when he was outside he actually got to experience that shit as a mortal, considering they had no choice but to give him a bracelet when he left.

Kayleigh rolled her eyes. It seemed like all her friends were always on the edge of trouble. Why she was friends with so many people like that, she couldn’t say. Probably because they were her opposites. “Oh, only the finest drinks for me,” she told him, doing her best to keep the voice despite her giggles. “Tequila. And I’m almost always out of trouble. Or at least I try to be. Do you think you’ll go to the festival this week?”

He grinned as he ordered Kayleigh a tequila, getting himself a spiced rum and coke. As he paid for their drinks he shrugged, “Yeah, I’ll probably go at some point. It’s something different, I guess.” Harley had always liked rides and rollercoasters, so he was interested to see what they had to offer but he’d probably try to do everything in one day. He didn’t think he could handle more than one day of so much social interaction. Plus, just because the festival was there didn’t mean he didn’t have to work still. “What about you? Are you gonna go?”

Had you met Harley a few years ago you would agree with everyone when they said that he was probably the cheeriest guy they had ever met. Whenever you saw him he was always with a smile on his face— one that was almost contagious and made you smile back just by seeing it. He was a great friend to have and everyone liked him. If you didn’t like him, then you were the one with the problem, not him. Whenever anyone needed some cheering up, they went to him, and it was almost a given that he would cheer you up— he was just that kind of guy.

His happiness didn’t last very long, though. Everything changed for him when his mother fell ill with cancer. He was very close to his mother, since she was the only parent he had. She had been both a mother and a father to him and was always his biggest supporter and critic. To be told that she had a terminal illness and that there was nothing anyone could do about it was heart wrenching for the young teen. He wished he could do something to help, but there was nothing anyone could do. Truly, all they could do was wait. Harley fell into a state of depression shortly before his mother’s death. And after? Things only got worse for him. He shut everyone out—including his girlfriend who had tried to be there for him through it all. He wanted nothing to do with anyone, all he wanted was to be alone and be the happy guy that once would cheer everyone up. Though he knew that was very unlikely. He pushed and pushed his girlfriend away. Sometime he would even go days without talking to her. One day he got a call from her parents, and the news he received only sent him over the edge; The girl he loved, the one he had pushed away, had died in a car accident. He felt so terrible— he, her boyfriend, had not been there. He had never even told her that he loved her or even thanked her for all she had done.

After losing the only two people he had on his side, Harley decided he couldn’t live any longer, and attempted to commit suicide. That attempt was truncated by his cousin walking in and stopping him just before he went through with it. Harley was not about to give up though, and even though his family had kept a closer eye on him, he was able to find another way to go through with the attempt. This time his attempt seemingly worked, but he woke up a day later realizing his attempt had failed, but how? For so long, all Harley wanted was to end it all, and yet every time he did he just would wake up a day later with everything was back to normal. The government caught wind of his failed attempts and stepped in, taking him to Lake Grimstone where he was with people more like him. At first he was still under that deep depression but after a while and after meeting a few people, he began to open up and started really working on getting his life together. He still has days were he wakes up without wanting to talk to anyone, even feeling the same emotions that made him want to end it all, but he knows that he has to take it one day at a time.

» CONNECTIONS

DARCIE O’HANNIGAN - Harley see’s Darcie whenever he’s feeling like his depression is worsening. He feels like she genuinely wants to help him and he is grateful for that.

ZANE PATEL - Harley feels the most comfortable around Zane. They may not have shared every part of their past with one another, but they have a very strong bond. 

SCOTT PAINE - He may only be a couple of years older than Harley, but Scott is a mentor to him. Being around Scott has made Harley wonder if Harley’s own father is still out there and if he had a power similar to his own.

“It’s literally all I do.” Kristen nodded, took a sip of beer and then paused before adding. “That and going to parties.” A smile formed on her lips at the thought. Kristen tipped the beer up to her lips, drinking until half of the bottle was gone. “So how does that work, exactly?” Kristen asked. “You training. Are you training your power or are you training your physique?” She eyed him closely, tilting her head to the side. She knew he had muscles under his clothes. She could tell. 

“Job’s here are mandatory, Harley.” She let out a bored sigh.”Thirty hours a week.” She took another sip. “I work as a bartender on the side. We have that in common.” Kristen smirked and then finished off the beer. “Except I work at a different bar. Prohibition.” She licked her lips. “I usually do go straight to bed, but tonight I just… wasn’t really all that tired.” That wasn’t necessarily true. She was exhausted. But when Kristen got this tired, it was much harder for her to fall asleep.

“My friends don’t like me trying to train my power considering it usually means I have to get hurt first, so I just generally try and keep in shape and use the trainers their to learn hand-to-hand combat. My power’s pretty passive anyway, I’m not too sure how I would train it.” That was a lie. Harley wanted to see if he could slow down or speed up the healing, and how far his power truly went. The immortal had died in many different ways, and been injured in even more, but there were limits he hadn’t dared to push and he didn’t think he would be allowed to, or encouraged to push. 

“Oh, I like that place. It’s where I go usually if I’m staying in Park.” He liked the club he worked at, but he didn’t feel entirely comfortable getting shit-faced there in front of his colleagues and managers. “I’ve probably seen you there and just been too drunk to remember.” Harley teased softly, looking over the other. “Considering the first thing I said to you was that you look tired, I’m calling bullshit on that but you know, that’s your prerogative.”

Rosalie whisked the shadows back and forth between her hands as she walked down the streets and lifted her eyes at the sound of a familiar voice. Smiling back at Harley, her mind made the shadows return to their proper places and answered, “It’s been a while Harley but yeah I’d love a drink! Where’d you have mind?”

“I mean, I was thinking here if I’m being honest. Though if you wanted to go somewhere else I’m open to suggestions.” He shrugged, not minding where they ended up so long as there was alcohol involved. Even if that meant travelling to Point. Still he stayed near the doorway of Prohibition, waiting for Rosalie’s answer.

“Extraction is the key.” Brian offered as his answer before taking another long swig of beer. “A cure of sorts. Although my superiors don’t want me to call it that because they don’t want me to make people feel upset or like there’s ‘anything wrong with them.’ You want your ability gone. Oliver West wants his gone. There are several people who want their abilities gone. Call it extraction, call it a cure, whatever. It is what it is.” Extraction was the first phase anyway. Everything else was top secret, but Brian figured that Harley wouldn’t pry if he was openly honest about most of the project. “C’mon Hidalgo, you know they aren’t going to let me do all that to you. They have set protocols. But…” a wicked smirk spread across his face as he took another drink. “…what they don’t know won’t hurt them.” Harley could be the key. The man, as far as everyone was aware, couldn’t die, so realistically it wouldn’t matter what Brian did. “I’m going to automatically assume you’re in.”

“Yeah, except Oliver’s allowed a bracelet.” Harley wasn’t allowed one, he knew he would never be given one on a more permanent basis like Oliver seemed to have. Every time he saw the boy he seemed to have it on. Maybe it was a Point thing that Harley didn’t understand, but it still felt like double standards, even if the government were just protecting Harley from himself. The immortal let his smirk drop and a sigh leave his lips as he heard Brian’s words, almost opening his mouth to argue back when he saw the smirk appear on the scientists own features. “Yeah, I’m in. And the no one can know thing works perfectly for me.” Harley didn’t want it in his file, and he didn’t want his friends to know. They were things that would prove significant obstacles in this otherwise. “See, now we’re drinking to celebrate our new partnership. So it should be more than one.”

“I had thought of that, but what if one of the people I don’t test holds the key to everything. I can’t go over looking things just to make life easier for myself.” Brian had trained himself to expect nothing less than perfect. Too many times in the past things had been over looked and had the unintended outcomes. “Blood test. Body scans. Brain scans. All under different conditions. The usual.” There were…other tests…but Brian kept those a little more hush.

“Tests to do what, though? Like, what’s the end goal?” Harley asked as he glanced over the other. “Do you just want to find if our powers lie inside us somewhere or do you have other goals?” He would happily offer himself up for repeat tests and not just the standard, but he had to know the reasoning behind it first. The immortal had so often wanted rid of his power, and whilst he was growing to accept it more and more, it was still something that interested him. The only reason he made himself accept it was because he couldn’t promise himself there would ever be something that could take his immortality away. “I know I’ve been one of your little guinea pigs, but why do just one test at a time when you could do many? Take as much blood as you want, scan multiple times without risking radiation poisoning, do whatever the hell else without the risk of killing me. I’m not saying I’d let you cut into my brain, but I mean, if you’re looking for something that could potentially take the powers away I can offer you more.” God, he knew that if Z or Tristan heard him, or even if the therapist Rhea heard him, they’d scream the word no and forbid it, but they weren’t here, and he hoped Brian didn’t care enough about his self-destructiveness to put Harley’s well-being above a cure. “I’ve grown used to it, but that doesn’t mean I want this power.”

Max couldn’t remember the last time he had gone to a bar which was why he was now looking forward to a chill night. “Anything greasy works for me.” He said with a chuckle. “But I can eat just about anything,” he added. “So tell me, anything new and exciting going on? It seems like things are rather calm, at least to me, but maybe that’s because all I ever seem to do is work.” 

“See now that sounds like a challenge.” Harley teased, laughing as he handed over the money for the drinks that were soon sat down in front of them. He wasted no time in taking a good mouthful, chuckling at Max’s words. “I mean, nothing really all that interesting seems to happen to me. The most interesting thing it the hilariousness of drunk people in the club I work at, but even then they’re mostly just annoying.” And yet he happily became one of them on his days off. “What about you?”

“Okay but the DJ sucks.” Zane insisted as he glanced towards the DJ booth again. He couldn’t help it. His parents had instilled pride for work in him. That was about the only thing that he had taken from them and while he was in a profession they weren’t happy about, he still had the same drive. “I haven’t forgotten.” Zane chuckled as he turned his attention back to Harley. “But some things are harder to get out of my head than others. You know this.” Zane just couldn’t help it. “Then distract me.” He challenged Harley as he finished his drink and sat it down on the nearby table. “Let’s see if it works.” 

“One song change, Patel. And you make him do it, you don’t get behind that deck yourself.” Technically that wasn’t work, right? Zane wasn’t really doing anything physically himself. “And pick a good one so I can distract you real good.” He waited until Zane changed the song to something more upbeat, and something more their style. Harley smirked, pulling his friend back towards him so that he could dance around him. He wasn’t shy with Zane, and he definitely wasn’t once he had a drink in his system. Harley didn’t care who was watching, he danced very close to Zane, his hips moving provocatively and in ways that he hadn’t seen many mens hips move before. It was eye-catching, for those that showed any interest, but his moves were for Zane and him alone. Dancing was something that Harley loved to do, but the type of dancing he liked was something that he didn’t think was worth pursuing anything serious for, and to be saved for the clubs or the bedroom. “Whenever I dance like this I feel like I should be taking my clothes off.” Harley laughed loudly over the music, but it didn’t stop him from moving.
