Please understand, if I sob about how basically any characters in this series care about each other in any capacity, it's not the same as saying it isn't toxic as hell. Every dynamic in this series is in some way toxic as hell. Some are worse than others in the same way a hurricane is worse than a tornado; that tornado is still incredibly deadly. There are no healthy romances. The only things resembling healthy friendships are probably among Nona's gang and not even all of those.

I'm just interested in the times and in what ways people enjoy each other's company in spite of that, in spite of ways they also use and hurt and sabotage each other. I'm interested in devotion despite it being self-destructive and zealous, in love that refuses to die despite being almost entirely suffocated in overwhelming resentment and misery and hatred that exists right alongside it.

And I don't get why people only seem to condemn it sometimes. Harrow for their whole lives treated Gideon worse than most characters are ever treated and we're still all insane about them. Cam and Pal have probably the (relatively) best relationship in the series and it still has inescapable problems and ways they make each other worse.

Like, this is the Horrors Of Love Series. It should go without saying that it's all gonna suck. It's just interesting how human everyone is and how connections form or persist despite how bad everyone sucks. It hurts worse (better) to look at the parts that didn't entirely suck and think about how it didn't HAVE to be this way. That there was anything that might have been better, in a different life. Much like people often do with college AUs, it's lamenting the seeds or remnants of something that didn't have to be as miserable as it is. But it still is so miserable. I'm never saying it's not.

harrow the ninth is really like. what if orpheus didn't turn around. what if he wasn't going to turn around. what if he kept his face pointed resolutely ahead and trusted that she was there even not knowing what he was hoping for. what if orpheus had to be cajoled and threatened and eventually forced to turn around. what if eurydice hadn't been told the rules and also had a crippling fear of abandonment and spent the whole time pleading with him to look at her. what if orpheus trusted that she would follow him but eurydice couldn't trust that he would care. what if orpheus was told point-blank that eurydice was almost certainly not actually behind him and he chose to keep walking anyway. what if eurydice touched sunlight again and orpheus wasn't there. what then.

Nona the Ninth says important things like "even in the cruelest most broken world love can still matter" and "righteous fury is still fury and can be so destructive" and "mass suicide cancelled I forgot there was a dog"

Hear me out:

Gideon the 9th x Pacific Rim.

They're already all in drift-compatible teams!!

There's even precedent in PR for teams of 3, to account for the Tridentariii.

6th House would definitely be the smaller but lethal unit.

The 9th would have the "relic" jaegar pulled out of storage, with fresh paint to hide the rust.

The 7th's bastard move is exposing the necro-pilot to Kaiju brain via neural drift so that they better understand the opponent, or to a cancer-causing core like Cherno-Alpha (the Russian husband-wife team from PR).

The 4th compensates for not having much high-quality steel with extra missile power.
