@hato-mercenary
Plugged our windows computer back in at the office. It takes like 20-30 minutes to fully boot up. What a piece of shit. Bill Gates is an asshole he can suck start his Glock.
People are retards for putting up with this low quality of a product. If cars or condoms were made this poorly people would have just stopped buying them.
I hate how the standard response to this problem is "Just get an SSD bro". The problem isn't that mechanical hard drives are too slow to keep up with the demands of modern software. The problem is that the operating system is so bogged down with spyware and bloatware. If Linux can offer an operating system that runs as fast as Windows 7 while still being secure there's no reason why Windows should be such garbage.
It's low quality and rushed programming. I've seen the programmers talk about how bad the quality management is. Some issues in windows I have seen where you have to go into the terminal (I refuse to use windows terms) and reprogram the OS itself.
Yeah I tried that to reduce bloat and it didn't help. Next PC I think I'm gonna make the plunge back into Linux.
I have like 7 virtual Linux machines I run off of my Windows computer, lol.
When I finally replace my piece of shit MacBook I'm going with linux. Proton is good enough for most games now and I don't want to spend hours fucking around with Chris Titus Windows Tools just to have a passable experience.
You've been inactive for a while. I hope you're okay
Hi, I hope I didn't cause too much worry with my inactivity. I am alive, but I don't think I'll be posting on tumblr anymore.
This blog began with the intention of making the ukrainian perspective on war in Ukraine visible for the foreign audience, and with most of the interaction coming from other Ukrainians, I feel like I'm in an echo chamber.
Not to dissmiss the foreigners who still care - rest assured, your support is seen, appreciated and much needed.
But the majority of people on this website are actively hostile, condescending and dissmissive towards Ukrainians, and my time is better spent elsewhere than arguing with privileged teenagers who think the peak tragedy of the war in Ukraine is that "russian culture is being destroyed" (reality check: russian artists are thriving in Europe on foreign grants, while ukrainian artists and art are being destroyed every day, together with everything we have).
If anyone still cares, please donate to any trustworthy initiative (if you don't know any, United24, BackAndAlive, Serhiy Prytula Foundation and Hospitaliers are always sound choices). The word "desperate" fails to describe the atmosphere right now. We feel like we are left to die.
The vibes are definitely some "darkest hour" shit right now. Things in the eastern front are bad. Really fucking bad. Worse than the media makes it sound.
My team leader was wounded in action last night on what was supposed to be a "quick and easy" last second op. I spent the entire night at the command center while he was stuck on the line and out of contact due to EW. It was more draining than the incident on my last deployment where a KH-55 almost got me. This is my third deployment with him. He's my best friend. For hours I thought I was going to have to make the worst call you possibly can to his parents.
The rest of my team basically told command to get fucked in the morning, took a humvee, and went and pulled him along with several other badly injured guys off the line. My TL had multiple shrapnel wounds including one 2cm above his right femoral that he packed a roll and a half of celox into by himself. He's going to be fine in a couple of weeks. We got so lucky this time. There was a 2-3hr period during the rescue attempt where I genuinely thought that I just might lose most of my friends in a day. It didn't happen. Thank fuck.
I'm so fucking glad he pulled through, jesus christ.... Thinking about ya, homie
Our CO had a 30mm grenade dropped by a drone hit directly on top of his helmet. It split the helmet in half and gave him a nasty concussion, but otherwise it didn't leave a scratch. His legs got torn up a bit by some other explosions and he spent most of the night slumped over unconscious against a tree in no man's land, but we got him out and he's going to be fine. We got off super easy all things considered.
Holy fucking hell, those HELMETS. that grenade basically just went 'DONK' Keep rolling those nat 20s out there wtf I'm glad you guys got him, and you made it out okay. FUCK THESE DRONES???? HONEST TO FUCKING GOD
Drones suck. Outside of transition hours you are constantly being watched if you're not under cover within 3-4km of the line. And the drones have gotten bigger. There are heavy lift drones now that drop 120mm mortar rounds. Evac is insanely high risk now because when you try to go pick the wounded guys up you have a great chance of getting splattered by multiple FPV drones. The Humvees we have are a godsend. Enough armor to bounce the smaller drones, and fast enough to be harder for the big ones to hit.

I feel the need to specify that revolvers are objectively worse than automatic pistols in almost every way with the exception of a couple applications. But then the revolvers that fit those niches are so difficult to shoot with any kind of sufficiency, while having more recoil and lower capacity than a comparable automatic handgun, that you really really need to know your shit to be able to actually use the things. Choosing a revolver over an automatic pistol is like choosing a vintage motorcycle over a new honda civic.
A .357 revolver provides the same terminal performance as a 9mm handgun with more recoil, more noise, less capacity, significantly higher cost, while drastically more difficult to shoot efficiently, all wrapped in a package that is objectively more dangerous and slower to operate, and more prone to failure while requiring more maintenance than a 9mm automatic handgun. If you spend a significant amount of time shooting, you understand revolvers are anything but "point and shoot" because of their heavy, long double action trigger and complicated manual of arms. You have to train significantly more to do significantly less. I'm a firm believer in the idea that the most important quality of a gun is your likelihood to carry it, but even so. The only practical application where these tradeoffs are warranted are fringe cases of extreme deep concealment and sketchy shit.
Revolvers suck.
I'm kinda blown away by how bad this comparison was. "A spear can kill"? Who the fuck is out there carrying a spear? Nobody! Because they're obsolete!
Revolvers were obsolescent by the 1950s at best. By the 80s they were fully obsolete for most applications. Today they're barely even acceptable in niche cases. Their legendary reliability can't even be counted on anymore because frankly, the companies that make them don't take their customers seriously and expect them to put a box of ammo through them at most and then forget about them. The debut of the modern Colt Python was one of the most embarrassing things I've ever seen. The most common manufacturers of "affordable" revolvers, Taurus, is widely known for churning out crap.
I love revolvers and I highly enjoy shooting them. I will never carry one for defense.
I will say. Taurus is startlingly pretty good now. They're ironing out some production stuff here and there but in general they're like actually a great value now. My TX22 is so good its fucking stupid. I've shot several thousand rounds through it with no cleaning and the only failures i get are one of my magazines with an extended basepad noses up sometimes.
That's good to know. I might be getting old because I mostly remember Taurus as being the company that was like "do you want a Beretta or Smith & Wesson but are too goddamn poor? You can have our versions, if you're willing to take your life into your own hands. Also we made a revolver shotgun for some reason."
No, I remember that too.
Sorry I'm still stuck on the part where this guy asserts that full power .357mag isn't any better than 9mm.
Yeah I said that because .357 magnum doesn't do anything 9mm can't. The highest power .357 loads I can find are a 125gr projectile going 1700fps. This is not fast enough to cause anything but crush wounding; the temporary wound cavity will most likely not cause any additional tissue damage. 9mm is capable of sending 124gr projectiles around 1550fps in modern weapons when loaded to 9mm Major spec. Sending projectiles at that velocity is liable to cause them to over-expand and underperform via the projectile disintegrating, thus under-penetrating. If the projectile doesn't over-expand, then all you accomplish is having a projectile that overpenetrates with enough energy to kill another person. Congrats. Only at the low cost of having 1/3 the ammunition on hand and drastically slower followup shots.
.357 is shit and i know more than you.
This is a huge logical leap. 9mm Major won't chamber in normal handguns. It's used for competition shooting almost exclusively in open class race guns. And there's different kinds of expanding ammunition for those higher velocities.

Eldar deserve to be more evil. As a treat.
The Eldar hatefucked Slaanesh into existence. They've been evil enough.

World Fencing Championships: Ukraine's Olga Kharlan disqualified for refusing Russian Anna Smirnov's handshake

Fuck traditional sport and fuck that Usmanov-owned federation. Olga did everything right. She really represented our country in that moment. Very few of us would agree to shake that hand in our day to day reality.
Everyone who bleats about 'rules are rules' should be dragged face-first through every Ukrainian school sport hall destroyed by russian ordnance.
Countries need to start refusing to issue Russians visas for any reason.
Nope. Sports should rise above politics. To do otherwise is to blame the athletes for the idiocy of their leaders--and that's wrong.
Counterpoint: the fucking 1936 Berlin Olympics. Also, if the Olympics had happened again in 1940, would you demand that a Jewish athlete shake hands with a German one competing under the swastika?
@hato-mercenary I don't "demand" anything.
Funny you should bring up the 1936 Olympics because Jesse Owens was the driving force behind the participation of the United States in the games. The U.S. had planned to boycott the events:
Amateur Athletic Union president Jeremiah Mahoney argued that participation amounted to support of the Third Reich, but he was outdone by the American Olympic Committee head Avery Brundage, who insisted that the Games were for the athletes and not the politicians.
Like other elite Black athletes who grew up in an unequal society, Owens considered the moral stance against Germany to be hypocritical and wasn't inclined to surrender the chance to shine on a global stage. He eventually expressed his desire to compete in the Games, a position that drew the condemnation of African American publications and NAACP head Walter White.

Jesse Owens got it right. @hato-mercenary got it wrong.
Given the fact that the games served to mostly legitimize the Nazi government and what happened next, I disagree. Sports washing and propaganda are a huge part of international athletics. Why do you think Russia had such a large state doping program? Russia should not be allowed participation in the international community as a whole for as long as they behave like a rogue state.
The original post was about an athlete refusing to shake hands with another athlete after both participated in the match under clear rules that require the contestants to shake hands at the end of the match. Kharlan knew the rules and flaunted them. If you knowingly flaunt the match ruled, you accept the consequences. She deserved the Black Card.
Good sportsmanship on the field of play should transcend politics, or don't participate in the first place.
Kharlan could have chosen not to play the match, but she chose to compete. If she wanted to make a political statement--which she clearly did--she should have done it before the match, not after. Once you agree to participate, you have an obligation to do so in a sportsmanlike manner and according to the well-established rules. Period.
Not to mention which that Kharlan was not even representing Russia at the match. She is Russian by birth.
@hato-mercenary dropped a red herring into the discussion and made it about Russian participation on the international stage, a point the OP did not address. And originally, neither did I.
However, arguing that the fate of an athlete's entire career should rest on the idiocy of their government is short-sighted and ignorant. While I agree with your sentiment, I disagree with how it plays out for those involved and the lasting impact our sentiment has on their careers.
International athletics have largely been, and should remain, as apolitical as possible. The games are about the athletes, not their leaders.
Play by the rules, or don't play.
Look who's making the rules here, shall we? I'm of the mind that if Russian athletes want to compete, they should fix their fucking country. Also the Russian who's hand she refused to shake has post lots of pics of herself in a Soviet Ushanka with her brother that serves in the army. Wearing his uniform. She's openly supportive of Putin. No one should be forced to shake the hand of their oppressors just to participate in international competition. So, would you force a Jew competing at the Olympics to shake the hand of a Nazi while the Holocaust was ongoing? Because that's basically what this is.

About to do some important research on Ukrainian youth culture.
My fiancee, watching me leave the apartment to walk the dog Revo in hand wearing my "Daddy Bandera" shirt: You look like real Ukrainian (derogatory).
About to do some important research on Ukrainian youth culture.
there's writing scifi/fantasy when Catholic Tolkien style and then there's whatever Gene Wolfe did: there's a past messianic figure, the hero is his reincarnation, returning to usher in a new era, except it's all a carefully orchestrated plot by a bunch of time-travellers who decided to brainwash and make the idiot hero into the Chosen One. because he keeps getting himself killed, they keep backup versions. also everyone eats brains. also it's so far into the future the society has become medieval again.
Aight that sounds amazing.
It's called The Book of the New Sun. It's dark and it's weird and I have plans to eventually re-read it and then maybe read the rest of Wolfe's Solar Cycle.
I should look into that. I love weird SF.
