would’ve, could’ve, should’ve is one of those taylor songs that makes you want to scream at the sky in anguish and it tugs at your heart because it’s so relatable. not only to other people who were manipulated by older “lovers” but to anyone who has been in a situation where what happened to you was a tragedy, it was manipulative and disgusting and completely out of your control. because it leaves you angry and unresolved, you want the person who did it to you to pay but often times they get to wash their hands clean and you’re left to pick up the pieces of yourself and put yourself back together. it’s watching someone take something from you and walk away without consequences while you suffer in the aftermath. it’s like having a piece of yourself stolen and even though it wasn’t your fault you can’t help but blame yourself and “regret them” because you should’ve known better, or you shouldn’t have let them get to you. but it was never your fault, but you still have that grief for who you would’ve been and what you would’ve done had they not taken something from you.
i know that dessa makes a lot of jokes about how she only ever writes love songs and torch songs, but i think that her songs about family relationships are really some of her best work. annabelle pick up the phone i'm calling from the kitchen, we just never seem to listen when we're sharing the same room. i don't need to know but there's a set of my keys left under your door, and if you need a place to sleep tonight then that's what family's for. i never do kneel beside my bed but it looks like your afterlife is covered, i hope on earth you're careful, kid. the old men call me by my mother's name, she looked just the same they say. choked up riding in the backseat, dad at the wheel staying tough if you ask me, he's always best when the blade's up against his neck, when shit goes wrong the man comes correct. last thing you said was you'd be watching over me, and we both know i don't believe that to be true (i hope i'm wrong). i hope i'm wrong, i hope you're up there after all. my little brother's nearly twice my age, he taught me how to meditate i taught him how to read. and you've learned how to hold your own how to stack your stones, but the history's thick, children aren't as simple as we like to think. mom said it was serious, dad said you'd be fine, i thought you were the prophet of 1989. when the wagon tipped i prayed over your body, i asked god to take the damage out on me. now we've got a grownup love and i know that's how it's supposed to be, same old story, mom gets easters lets dad have christmas eve, but i won't pretend i don't remember how unusual we were, the little mystic and his handler, all some children do is work. there's just... an incredible and luminous intensity to how she writes about family relationships.
I know I could have loved you but you would not let me

KIKI PLS GIVE ME UR RECOMMENDATIONS PLS
!!!!! I'm not as well versed in this as I should be, really, but my reccomendations are pretty solid:
IGOR - Tyler, the Creator: OK so this isn't a rap album, as said by Tyler, but it does have a heavy amount of rap within it so. IGOR is a narrative album following a love triangle between Tyler's character, Igor, his best friend and said best friend's ex girlfriend. It's so good and gets better with every relisten. His style for the era is incredibly iconic with the block coloured suits and blond wig, and it has one of my favourite music videos ever.
Flower Boy - Tyler, the Creator: This one came as a shock to many fans of his, lol. Flower Boy is a pretty introspective and personal album where one of the most reflected on topics is his sexuality in songs like Garden Shed. It's honest and melancholy, but also has some sweet, uplifting tracks. Less narrative than the typical Tyler album, but the songs are still linked together which I think is neat. I think it's a perfect album to chill to in the summer.
Extra Tyler songs: BOYFRIEND, GIRLFRIEND (sooo good for a song that was a scrapped demo)
channel ORANGE - Frank Ocean: How could I not. I've already reblogged his culture changing coming out post earlier today, so I gotta give a shoutout to this album as well. While not as explicitly queer as his third album, Bad Religion hits that angst just right. The songs are sooo chill.
Blonde/Blond - Frank Ocean: HOW COULD I NOT. This is my favourite album of all time, and it's always a perfect hour for me. I just. I think I've talked about this album enough times for people to get how fucking deeply I feel for it. So good.
Extra Frank Ocean songs: Chanel (I love love love the opening line)
American Boyfriend: A Suburban Love Story - Kevin Abstract: This is a very explicitly queer album, which tackles homophobia in a really blatant manner. The narrative does end happily tho, I think the final song is very cathartic to listen to. My favourite is American Boyfriend, though.
(Side note: Kevin was also part of the boy band BROCKHAMPTON, where he also talked about being gay a lot. However, my favourite queer song from the group, SUMMER, wasn't written by him)
Ego Death - The Internet: This is an alt rnb band! They're a splinter off the rap group Odd Future, which had Tyler and Frank, but also Syd tha Kid, who becomes one of the lead singers for the band along with Steve Lacy. Since Syd is a lesbian, a few of the songs talk about her relationships with women. Her voice is sooo gorgeous and I should listen to her more. I assume this is the same for the rest of their discography.
Gemini Rights - Steve Lacy: I feel a bit mean for reccomending this one since it's a break up album he made after breaking up with his boyfriend, but it is queer. The songs are catchy and his voice is as good as always. My favourite on this one I think is Mercury.
Extra Steve Lacy songs: Like Me (long but it is good)
Honourable mentions: Lil Nas X (how could I not mention him.), Lil Uzi Vert (GNC and uses they/them pronouns, which threw so many rap fans for a loop. Also produced one of my favourite tweets of all time), Megan thee Stallion (has talked about attraction to women. Also I owe her my life.), Janelle Monáe (am planning on listening to them, I've heard sooo many good things), 070 Shake (improved every Kanye song she was in)
There are so many more but shoutout these guys fr.
wait kiki you genius i can give Janelle Monae recs, dirty computer, all of it, one of my favourite albums of all time absolute no skip for me. I've listened to some other of their stuff but i feel like you have to start w dirty computer just cause it's self care and you deserve it.
Also Kehlani, i only know them for rnb but they do hip-hop too, i love their song Honey so much.
ya ^^ I'm probably missing someone glaringly obvious but yeah
