hate to break it to you but the entire concept of dr strange appropriates asian culture. the story was created in a time when eastern culture was considered exotic and mystic (still does to an extent)… and yet society still had rampant discrimination against actual asian people (and uh, discrimination still exists. also, there are basically no asian actors in this movie/ which is based on asian culture. and set in asia). solution? white guy gets Magic Asian Powers. white guy saves the world.

Then why was no one attacking the comic writers for making Doctor Strange white? Then why is no one mad when in the Flash tv show they made Iris and Wally West black? People only care when a white person is playing a non white character. No one says anything when it’s reversed. Plus why are you attacking me? Benedict literally isn’t in yellow face and that’s what I said. I’m not trying to attack anyone I’m just so confused as to why people only attack white people when it comes to things like this. You either have a problem with everyone playing a character that’s not their race or you don’t have a problem with any of it.

2. im definitely not giving the comic writers of dr strange a free pass for the inherently appropriative nature of the dr strange story

3. dr strange does not exist without asians. tibetan culture and traditions are integral to the very existence of the dr strange story, and yet dr strange and the ancient one were cast as white people. there are definitely people out there who are legitimately mad about iris and wally west being cast as african americans, but it hasn’t caused the same kind of backlash as dr strange because their stories don’t depend on whiteness the way dr strange depends on asians. casting people of color in previously white fictional roles like iris and wally west doesn’t affect the core of the story and often adds nuances to the character that don’t exist if portrayed by a white person. it’s not as simple as supporting “racebending” or not. casting white people in roles meant for or better suited for people of color is a form of erasure and disregard for the history and culture that form a large part of poc characters’ stories.
