I usually don’t post stories on here but link them to my AO3, however I do have discussion and post any ideas and upcoming stories I have in the works. After some events and personal reasons I have started to write again and am trying to expand more into writing for more fandoms and practice writing darker fics.

Summary:

Kaji is still struggling to handle the beast under Natori's command, but even he comes to realize that no one is safe within Keel. Everyone is hiding some kind of vulnerability and sometimes the shadows of the night light up the cracks in someone's mask.

I absolutely LOVE IT when writers share their ideas and passions!!! I’m super excited rn so super long comment on the overall fic to follow on ao3 probably 😂.

These two are in an absolutely terrible crew with a tyrant of a leader (Natori Shingo, genuinely what is his deal???) and them being soft and vunlerable with each other when they’re both REALLY not soft people-especially letting themselves be vulnerable with someone when they’re in with a crew like KEEL.

That’s *trust*, that’s not insignificant.

Meanwhile, nationwide, federal policies continue to lead to enormous legal difficulties for transgender people. In the latest update, Idaho becomes the fourth-ever “Do Not Travel” state for transgender people, and may be the harshest of all such states, where bathroom usage can lead to 5-year prison sentences. Meanwhile, South Carolina expanded its bathroom ban to universities, causing its risk to rise to “Worst Laws Passed.” For youth, the map remains relatively unchanged, with Idaho likewise elevating to “Do Not Travel.”’

okay everyone gather round i've got a few wbk theories

okay everyone strap in - went looking up some kind of timeline for something and have been putting strings together...i'm metaphorically the guy with the red string webboard...okay now follow me....

First off - Makochi's location has never been revealed, nor do I remember any recognizable real cities or areas nearby being mentioned to gauge anything based on distance. Anyway...I got ideas...

I think Makochi is potentially located in Hokkaido or the Tōhoku region (and if the latter, likely in the northern areas)

I'm suspecting these two areas for several reasons. First and main of all - general time frame of the beginning of the Suo arc is probably September into October. And they're already complaining of cold and wearing heavier/warmer clothes which to me indicates the city likely has to be in the north of the country as much of the areas south will maintain high summery temperatures late into the autumn.

Second - Kasai district (where Bankoku-gai is supposedly settled) is a very real place in Hokkaido (though I suspect Nii-sensei doesn't want to fully label a real place in the manga, it's still possible since Bankoku-gai is the actual fictional place). The Kasai district of Hokkaido is also a collection point of a bunch of rivers which if it being a "river island" is a literal term, would make it possible and realistic.

Now potential counter argument is that Tsuge speaks with a Kansai dialect so potentially need to be close to Osaka or something. However, supposedly only Tsuge speaks with this accent, no one else, so he's an outlier. But also Osaka is the entertainment hub of Japan and Tsuge is very likely into the entertainment scene and that's probably where he picked up the dialect if not from family.

Now here's some more for you to nibble on....

WBK started serialization on Jan 13, 2021 meaning very likely that it's a 2020 based plot, meaning potentially that the "present day" for the media is set in 2020.

Now during the Umemiya backstory chapters we learn that around then was when the outside gangs were starting to pour in and make a scene, riling up the Furin students into more than just infighting. And also that the police had recently given up on helping the town. That Makochi's major central troubles were a recent problem arising that year. Based on Ume's age during present vs. then, we can guess this was about 8 years prior to "present day".

Now what is 8 years before 2020....

2012.

Does anyone remember something majorly significant happening in or near to 2012 in Japan?

In March 2011, there was a major 9.0 earthquake and a massive tsunami that caused catastrophic damage and fatalities in the Tohoku regions (particularly the east/Pacific side). The southern coastal areas of Hokkaido also suffered damage, but less fatalities or injuries.

But, understandably...Japan suffered financial recession and economic issues following the disaster for multiple reasons related a lot to a fall in travel and tourism income, financial recovery etc etc. And places like the more unpopulated towns in Hokkaido suffered.

As Makochi doesn't really show any big signs back in the past of major damage, it's more likely that they were outside the Tsunami damage range but were still major victims of the recession it caused and by the beginning-middle of 2012 were bringing in a slew of delinquents suffering and finding outlets.

And going off that - while I still believe that there is a bigger bad taking advantage of Makochi and I don't think Nii-sensei will make it blatant that their big bad is actually ambigiously a disaster-caused recession - I do genuinely believe that that's exactly what it might be.

kaji and sakura's dynamic is so very important to me even though it's not very emphasized (mostly bc kaji is way more of a watcher than he is a talker)

but though they come from somewhat different backgrounds (granted we don't know much about kaji's family life tbf) but we know he struggled with being perceived and accepting friendship and his own role as a leader. him and sakura struggle with the same thoughts of unworthiness and imposter syndrome - even if its for different reasons.

and we see it expressed several times in their interactions

when sakura goes to kaji after the keel fight and asks him how he allows himself to rely on his vice captains like he does

"you leave everything to your vice captains. how can you let them handle so much?" - Sakura (ch. 58)

and then my favorite thing that is often shown especially with kaji is panels like the above ^^^ - kaji's eyes...as he realizes what sakura is saying - what it means. as his observations fall into place. in this moment i think kaji's recognizing what sakura is truly struggling with, and even more so sees himself - particularly his first year self - mirrored there.

but bc kaji is self-admittedly bad at communicating, we get to see kaji processing these moments in real time, processing what best to say or do and if he has to confront the situation in a leadership style etc. here he chooses to say what's on his mind, to help sakura in the only way he knows how (hiragi-style with his own experiences)

and then during the training with the upperclassmen in preparation for the noroshi fight (ch. 91), we get a moment like this again, with a lot less direct communication. sakura is talking about how he wants - needs - to keep training.

we again get kaji processing...

we get panels of everyone else watching sakura but kaji is the first seen. and he holds a kind of different look in his eyes than everyone else. yet again that realization - seeing himself mirrored in sakura.

and then he steps up to take sakura on in a spar (which the next chapter says got overwhelmingly heated that hiragi had to smack them both lmao) but according to sakura he doesn't hold back (which he technically does but sakura doesn't know this but there's no way kaji crashed out over that askldjaskj) but i do imagine it wasnt angry fighting...i think kaji and sakura's fight was like a sparring version of his fight with togame on some level ngl - two strong fighters wanting to get to know each other.

and i just need more of these two building each other up okay?? they have shared experiences that can go places!!!
