@lura-valentine has once again ambushed me with a gorgeous Kalas reference sheet. He’s from Blackbird, my conversation-driven brainworm that happened after I went tit-for-tat with Apple TV’s Foundation. Listen, I know they had to take Asimov and turn it into compelling modern television. I get it. I’m not mad at it. But my brain simply cannot reconcile the literature with the screen, so I married it with The Things They Carried, and Blackbird happened. The ref sheet turned out beautifully, and apparently this is going to be a Blackbird upload week. If you’re interested in this sort of Asimovian/O’Brien (The Things They Carried), you can check out the first 12 chapters {here}. The first fic is complete and rated T; I just haven’t finished editing/uploading yet and have been saving it for weeks like this, when TORIMONO turns into a beast. (We’re 2 scenes into chapter 8, and we’re at 5.2k. It’s becoming a confrontation)

Around him, the city continued to move in its natural chaos as the street continued to narrow. Laundry hung from balconies above, dripping water onto the pavement. He stepped around the wet spots without looking down. An older man swept his storefront, the broom scratching steadily against the concrete. The man glanced up as he passed. Kaskel nodded once, a shallow but polite acknowledgment. The man looked away. A delivery scooter cut across an intersection. Two schoolgirls in matching blazers shared earbuds and bobbed their heads to something he couldn’t hear. A tarp was being pulled off a rack of discounted produce, revealing a pyramid of carefully arranged persimmons. The world is normal. You are not. The thought arrived as they tended to do—unbidden and unwelcome. Kaskel let it sit. He examined it with the same brief, dispassionate consideration he had for the persimmons, and moved on.

AUTHOR NOTE: Holy hell, chapter 7 pushed the fic over 50k. At the current average and the original chapter count estimate, this fic would end at 5,700,000 words. And that doesn’t include the sequels and the companion pieces. That chapter count is also inaccurate, based on an original 10k zero draft, where *this* version of chapters 7 and 8 was *just one chapter*, and the Flare series was only three chapters (it ended up being 17 in the fast drafts, ranging between 2,000 and 5,000 words each).

Its edges were darker and uneven, spreading across his sternum like spilled milk. It didn’t hurt the same way the pin feathers had hurt, but it itched in a way that scratching never relieved. He reached for the small jar of cream on the shelf beside his bedding and applied it with the same practiced, detached motions he’d used to smooth his feathers. The cool salve soothed his skin. He lay back, staring at the ceiling as the lesson settled over him clearly, taught through Reiko’s absence. Through the space where question and concern should have been. Disappear, and no one looks. Break, and no one comes. Need nothing. Be nothing. Stay still.

I know I’ve moved meta to my other blog, but this affects content tied to this account, so bear with me. A discourse as old as AO3 has resurfaced on my dash: authors marking dark, explicit, or violent content as “skippable.” Hi, yes. It’s me. I do this with TORIMONO’s explicit chapters. And I think there’s a conversation that isn’t being had: the craft of accessible fic. Because here’s the thing: On the surface, I agree with the criticism. A lot of the time, when I see “skippable” notes, the content inside the brackets feels like it carries less narrative weight. It feels like it was added to encourage viewership. The emotional depth isn’t there. And I’ll be honest: I see a lot of characters whose trauma doesn’t seem to inform their behavior, which feels more like a shiny badge than character building. But this all comes down to craft. And craft can be taught. It’s good that people want to support readers who choose not to engage with certain content, whatever their reasons. But this is where distinction also matters: calling a scene “skippable” signals it wasn’t important in the first place. That’s just how many readers interpret it. So how do we make it accessible instead? Well, the first step is always admission. If you can look at the scene and say “missing this would leave out this important information,” and that information is qualifiable, then it is not skippable. Stop lying to yourself and your audience. So, then what? Make it optional. “BuT iSnT tHaT jUsT ‘sKiPpAbLe’ WiTh FaNcIeR cLoThEs?” I mean, sure, you can argue that about the wording. So let’s talk Accessible Craft, and I’ll use TORIMONO as an example. Chapter 4 of Torimono, which is Explicit, is crucial to the narrative. It raises important questions, highlights the biological and neurobiological mechanisms I created, shows us character trauma, and uses clipped prose to recreate anxiety and dread. It is not filler. It is not an afterthought. It is not meaningless smut. So how is it “optional”? How is this accessible? By sitting down and systematically deconstructing the narrative into the key points that readers would miss if they chose not to read this chapter. This allowed me to do two things: 1. Draft a fade-to-black in the previous M-rated chapter. This fade-to-black highlights the biological mechanic. Readers miss the surrounding conversation, but the core mechanic is still present. 2. Seed the aftermath with context clues. The characters’ thoughts, conflicts, and navigation of the aftermath reveal what happened without having to ELI5. A reader who can see beyond the surface should be able to pick up what I’m putting down. And, as a bonus, these clues make the aftermath feel more believable. This does not replace reading the explicit chapter. But it does make the content optional. Think of it as DLC for a character’s backstory. Some people might choose to play it and get the experience firsthand; others might just read the Wiki summary. Both understand the story; those who played might understand it more deeply and resonate with it. But the wiki readers still get the gist. This is the conversation we need to be having. Everyone starts at a different place on any learning curve, and that’s wonderful! But it’s also time to shift the conversation away from “skippable content” to accessible content and consider what we’re actually trying to accomplish. TORIMONO starts out dubious, transactional, and deeply traumatic in ways the character cannot even name at the time. It gets better. But it has to start there. I just enable people to read between the lines.
