I really think everyone needs to truly internalize this:

Fictional characters are objects.

They are not people. You cannot "objectify" them, because they have no personhood to be deprived of. They have no humanity to be erased. You cannot "disrespect" them, because they are not real.

Your addition is actually completely antithetical to my message. It is literally the opposite of what I am conveying.

Stop telling people to encourage the cop inside their head.

How you treat fictional characters, given they are entirely objects of fiction, does NOT necessarily speak to your own character, and you do not need to be "careful".

It is not dangerous to imagine dark things happening to fictional characters. It does not mean you are secretly a bad person. It does not mean you unconsciously want to hurt people in real life. It is not a "slippery slope" to doing bad things to people in real life. You cannot damage your brain or turn yourself into a bad person by consuming "dark" fanfic.

I can write tentacle noncon of my favorite character all day long and be a fierce anti-sexual assault advocate in real life because what I do in my head is not the same thing as what I do in real life.

Round these parts I follow the advice of the ComicLab Uncles pretty closely. Well, reasonably closely. Well, I pick and choose.

Lately they’ve been espousing the idea of webrings: something we used to do in the days when search engines weren’t very good. The idea is that a group of websites of similar content would each have a link to the next site in a chain, which would eventually bring you back to the beginning, forming a loop, or ring—you get the idea.

It sort of fell out of fashion once search engines became a lot better at finding sites of one’s particular content. Unfortunately ads, and AI, and ads created by AI have meant that search engines aren’t very good again.

Great, I decided, I’ll join a webring! However Knifebeetle isn’t taking new applications, and WEB/COMIC/RING is only for comics on Neocities, and… that was all I could find, really.

I dithered for a couple of weeks. Then I accepted the idea that one should create what one cannot find in the world.

So I did.

Of course, it’s still in the puppy phase, where it’s largely useless and it pees on the floor. But if you do a webcomic that falls within its fairly loose set of guidelines, I urge you to join up! Sharing traffic lifts all boats.

I've had face-to-face conversations with people who use it for therapy, who use it to calculate the safety of pill interactions, who use it for all their emails and grant applications and legal documents and academic papers and finance sheets and for every single question they have about the world, and if you tell them about the ecological costs they just laugh and say "I guess I've used a lot of water." and I've been in multiple gatherings of 10+ people where I'm THE ONLY PERSON who doesn't use chatgpt. it's turning me into a ranting raving pariah, because how don't you people see??? why don't you understand??????? this bullshit didn't exist five years ago, you absolutely do not need it, and it is destroying everything
