As a writer, it's more interesting to me to write Hayden and J.J. as good friends to Shane. (I'm talking from a purely TV show angle for this post, I have Feelings about book Pike and J.J. that can go elsewhere).
Do you know one of the easiest way to build bonds with people? Ask them questions about themselves. We joke about Shane's thousands of question to Ilya, but that only fails with Ilya because Shane is unwittingly touching so many pain points. Hayden and J.J. would eat up with a spoon. This generational player wants to know more about them? He's interested in J.J.'s restaurant hobby and Hayden's children? He dryly funny and fantastic at the game you all love? Fucking sold.
Hayden is so excited (tv show here) to get Shane over to his house. He calls Shane to update him about the baby and wants Shane to come with him and the kids to the aquarium. Shane joins family dinners with ease and holds a baby like he does fairly regularly. They're not just co-workers who are kind of friendly. They're genuine friends.
When J.J. sees the X-Squad people, he doesn't hoard the experience, he calls Shane who he must know likes the movies and invites him to come along immediately.
They like Shane a lot! They hype him up and get excited for him when they think he's getting laid. When Hayden figures out Shane is uncomfortable he even re-calibrates the joke (if poorly) to "Get laid weirdo, or NOT, I don't care". Trying to tell Shane as best he can that he knows it's none of his business and he just wants Shane to go have a good time.
The ways that Shane can be awkward don't seem to phase them. When Shane doesn't respond to J.J.'s 'I'll fuck him for you' moment fast enough, Hayden even steps in to turn it around J.J. and draw attention away from Shane. J.J.'s intention in that moment is to tell Shane he has his back anyway. He has no clue how it comes across. Shane is his teammate and friend and if Rozanov is an asshole to him, J.J. will square up, not to worry.
And as how that will play out as things get revealed is way, way more interesting than 'these two always sucked and weren't real friends'. We have plenty of background characters to give that to us. Let's get into the meat of how painful in is when the people who do love and trust us, let you down in crucial moments. And even if it's not true, you can't help but think it's a little your fault. You could never let them get to know you the way you know them.
Shane finally agrees to go to a club with Ilya but only if he can bring Hayden. Ilya reluctantly agrees but plans on having the rest of the Centaurs get Hayden too drunk to bother them. Ilya underestimates how much Shane and Hayden missed each other now that they’re on different teams and what lightweights they are. Hayden and Shane are very quickly plastered dancing all over each other in the middle of the dance floor. Ilya steps away for a second to call Jackie to come get her husband and in the meantime the Centaurs have completely lost track of Shane and Hayden. The last thing they remember was them talking about how awesome it would be to be double married. Ilya is freaking out, how dare Hayden Pike try to steal his husband?? When Jackie finally gets there she tells Ilya not to worry because she knew this would happen, there is an unofficial rule that they’re not allowed to go drinking without JJ for this exact reason, so she slipped a tracker into Hayden’s wallet. They find Hayden and Shane down the road playing in a fountain downing soggy hotdogs. They don’t seem to have made it to the 24 hour chapel, but the next morning they find out that they did get matching tattoos
I know a lot of the fandom hates Hayden and JJ but I always feel really sad when I read a fic and Shane’s off to Boston/wherever and they’re never mentioned. Like people will give Shane completely new friends from characters he’s never interacted with, and ignore the two people who canonically love him so much. Like HR mentions Hayden and Jackie as being his best friends! Because yes removing Hayden removes Jackie and the pike children! They’re his nieces/nephew!
I don’t how to articulate it but Shane’s friends are important not just Ilya’s. They mean a lot to him that’s why when they do let him down it hurts! I don’t see why people can’t change their characterisations into something ‘better’ if they dislike them, rather than completely gut them from the story.
I have feelings about Hayden Pike and how people portray him and how I feel like it reflects specifically on Shane and more specifically his autism.
Long story short, why does everyone is Ilyas life (see Sveta, Cliff, the Centaurs etc) get to be ""unrealistically"" supportive and fleshed out but Shane's friends either don't or are not talked about? Why isn't the autistic character allowed to have close friends that care about him on his own merit. Yes he gets accepted and loved by the Centaurs, but that's after Ilya. Yes in a lot of fanon he gets accepted and loved by Ilyas friends, but they're Ilyas friends first!
The one friend he is explicitly shown as having, a very common fanon I see is him being a bad friend, or not liking Shane that much, or them drifting apart when Shane moves or whatever. And the other person shown as being friendly is JJ but he very rarely gets developed into a character at all, is rarely even mentioned.
We see Hayden and Shane being friends! They're at each others house! They spend weekends together! They call in the office season! They are dinner together enough that Jackie knows Shane's very specific diet!
Let Shane have friends that care about him and that he cares about. He is allowed and able to have people in his life beyond his Mother and his boyfriend. They are even allowed to be close.
Idk man, it just pisses me off. But this maybe because I'm sick of the autistic character being the outsider even in a group of friends. Let them be loved platonically. It doesn't take a soulmate or a mother to love an autistic person.
Also I think Hayden has great fic potential. He can absolutely get into shenanigans with Shane. They're silly dude jocks together.
They win the second cup. Hayden never thought it could be this good. A dynasty the announcers are saying.
Shane is grabbing his shoulders. He’s yelling in Shane’s face. He grabs Shane by the cheeks and pulls him in for a theatrical kiss, resounding smack. Everyone laughs, even Jackie.
Later in the locker room, so much champagne everywhere. They’re chanting for Shane and his cheeks are flushed and he stands up in front of all of them eyes wet, says, “Seriously this is for all of us. We all earned this. Together.” And he’s looking at Hayden on that last word and Hayden has to swipe at his eyes.
And Shane drinks. Like he actually drinks. Not just ginger ale but real fucking alcohol. And he’s swaying and laughing and Hayden keeps a hand on him to make sure he’s good. And the way it feels when Shane’s breath hits his neck when he leans in to whisper. “We did it. Jesus Christ” like it’s hitting him all over again. Hayden knows he’s beaming. “Fuck yeah,” he says, jostling Shane’s backwards ball cap and then they’re all yelling, thumping each other on the back all over again, JJ loud enough to make his ear drums vibrate in pain. And Mitty jumping in the middle like he’s in a freaking mosh pit and they topple over, a freakish drunken pile of limbs laughing laughing.
He laughs all the way to Shane’s hotel room. He laughs all the way into it. He laughs when he leans in connecting their lips and he swears the wall was right behind them but there’s nothing, free fall, and they’re on the hotel room floor. Shane hits it first with a groan. “Ow,” he says, eyes closed, still smiling. Hayden army crawls back over, kisses his belly button, his waist line, his rib, rucking Shane’s shirt up, Shane’s fingers in his hair. He noses at a nipple, snuffs hard in Shane’s armpit.
“Fuck Las Vegas,” Shane mutters.
“We fucked ‘em dead,” Hayden agrees, his ear lined up to hear Shane’s beating heart.
And when he wake up, a crick in his neck, still on Shane’s chest on the hotel room floor, he gets up as quietly as he can, tiptoes down the hall to his own room, and sneaks into the bed with his wife.

"Make sure you crimp the edges closed. It needs to be sealed tight. We don't want any leakage!"
It was Pie-Making Day at the Pike's. Jackie thought it would be a great way to use up all the fruits their trees produced over the summer. So she took Shane, Ilya and Hayden through it step-by-step, carefully observing as they assembled a pie each.
"Easy as pie! You're getting the hang of it," Jackie said. "Then you just rinse and repeat. So, shall I leave you boys to it?"
Hayden replied, "Don't worry, baby, we got this!"
"Thank you. I'll be over there with the girls, honey bun," she said before she left them.
Honey bun, Ilya mouthed to Shane. Shane and him were sharing the same amused look on their faces.
Once Jackie was out of earshot, Ilya asked Hayden, "Can you pass the flour, sugar plum?" This got a snort from Shane.
Hayden sighed. "Real mature guys," he said before he handed Ilya the bag of flour. "Here."
Ilya grinned wide at Shane, who matched it with his own mischievous smile.
"Thanks," Ilya said. "Ok. I am ready for next step."
"Then, you need to brush the top with some egg wash," Hayden told him.
Ilya nodded and said, "Ah. Eggs are on your right, jelly bean." Shane made a sound from his throat but he closed his mouth before the noise could escape him.
"Dude, stop." Hayden said firmly. But Ilya's smirk just deepened.
"What is wrong, butter cup?" Ilya asked, feigning innocence.
"Shane, your husband is bullying me again," Hayden whined. But when he looked over to Shane, he saw that Shane was pursing his lips, trying not to laugh. Hayden glared at him.
"Ilya—" Shane started, but it came out shakily. He had to clear his throat to gather his composure. His second try was more successful, though not the most convincing. "Ilya, be nice."
Ilya rolled his eyes. "Boooring."
Then after a moment, Shane asked, "Hey man, can you take this to Jackie?"
"Oh, for sure," Hayden replied as he grabbed the finished pie from Shane's hands.
Shane looked at Hayden in the face and winked. "Thanks, cutie pie."
Ilya did a spit take.
All pretense dropped as the couple couldn't hold back their laughter anymore. Ilya was laughing so hard he couldn't breathe, and Shane was wiping tears from his eyes. Hayden was just shaking his head.
"I hate you guys."
It took several long minutes before they recovered.
ilya rozanov is the type of guy to fall for game ads, so when one of the pike kids asks “you got games on your phone?” he unlocks his phone like a man showing off the inner pockets of his trench coat to reveal pages and pages of candy crush, toon blast, homescapes, gardenscapes, mahjong, solitaire, you name the ad he has the game
and it’s crazy because he is at an absurdly high level on each of them, i mean IR81 is topping the in-game leaderboards
and that’s how hayden and shane find the pike kids, in awe, huddled around ilya on his phone playing cooking fever like a madman
i already dread season 2 because it will be bad for hayden BUT do you think more people will see how the tension between him and ilya is the actual enemies-to-lovers dynamic the girls and gays are looking for in HR
whenever they’re eating together hayden plays footsie with shane under the table 90% to piss ilya off (hayden and ilya are both aware of this) and 10% for bisexual reasons (only ilya is aware of this)
