The absolute delusion of writing a fic that is 95% done and then deciding to change a major plot point. Telling myself I would only really have to change like 4 scenes. It won’t be that much work…

We're more like... a square peg in a round hole. Ew, no. Sorry. Forget I said that. The thing is, I... I kinda prefer being the hole... rather than the peg.
shane hollander appreciation week: day one favorite moment: shane being very scared, but also very brave ♥

➡️ Content warnings on fiction are a courtesy.
➡️ Not every medium of fiction and storytelling has or is expected to have content warnings or extensive tagging.
➡️ Print novels do not traditionally warn for content in any way.
➡️ Until AO3 came along, fanfiction did not traditionally warn for content in any significant way.
➡️ An author is only obligated to warn for content to the degree mandated by the format they publish their fiction on.
➡️ Content warnings beyond the minimum are a courtesy, not an obligation.
➡️ 'Creator chose not to warn' is a valid tag that authors are allowed to use on AO3. It means there could be anything in there and you have accepted the risk. 'May contain peanuts!'

➡️ 'Creator chose not to warn' is not the same thing as 'no archive warnings apply'.

Shane’s brain cycled rapidly through a half-dozen celebrities, porn actors, Grindr profiles, every attractive bartender who’d ever served him a beer, trying to find a comparison for this level of outrageously concentrated beauty in one person, but he was drawing a blank. The man—Ilya Rozanov, Facilities Attendant, his badge read—gestured around the supply closet. “I help you find something?” -- Canon-divergent AU set during the 2017-18 MLH season. Shane Hollander doesn’t have a single Cup to his name when he meets a very hot and very annoying janitor who works at the Metros stadium.

I am chewing on a crazy and likely controversial thought. I do not like the idea that some fic is written by AI. I do wish folks would just tag it so I personally could filter it out. I have limited free time and would rather engage with art and writing that was done by a person that I can be in community with. Caveat over lol.
But being a threads lurker (gotta freaking stop that) I can see quite clearly that some people do not care. They are asking for downloaded epubs of some of the fics on that list that authors have since deleted (and I’m talking the ones that had hundreds of instances of AI code, not just a couple) and saying things like well this is the only story that ever made me cry so I don’t care.
What if we could somehow create a different word, a different taxonomy for people who use AI to write fics. They’re not exactly authors in the same way as someone who is independently typing out a story. But maybe there is skill in crafting just the right prompt for the LLM. Maybe there is skill in editing and sewing together multiple outputs into one cohesive story. So maybe they are more akin to betas. Tech betas who take the raw slightly unhinged ramblings of a machine and make it into something more human, often hitting more popular and romantic tropes. Maybe we acknowledge there is skill in it and that some people love what this process creates. And then it can be morally neutral and just a different thing. That gets tagged appropriately as that different thing.
Maybe if it’s acknowledged as work even by some of us who are kind of offended by this process, it lessens the need for deception. Still leaves room for them to get their adoration from community. And encourages a more plain stating of people’s process.
I like to imagine that, partially due to the Hockey Robot stereotyping and partially due to his watertight media training, commentators are constantly going on about "What's going on in Hollander's head? What was Hollander thinking there? Can't help but wonder what the Metros' Captain has on his mind right now." and it's like. Well statistically speaking. Cock.
I think it’s important to acknowledge the ways Yuna and David fucked up, and also that they operate trying their best for the son they sincerely love and want to do right by
But i don’t think i will ever, ever be over that they didn’t know what to do when Shane was having a meltdown at the table and Ilya did
Ilya looks to them first, giving them the opportunity to act, assuming they will bc they (in theory) should know how to handle this better than him
But they don’t. Being gay isn’t the only thing Shane has masked from his parents and it makes me want to sit on the floor and cry
@raan-miir-tah WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS
KILLING EVE 1.08 | God, I'm Tired
write fic even if you think it's shitty. write fic you think no one else cares about and you just have an audience of one. write fic that is extremely self indulgent and packed to the brim with all the tropes you like and want to read. write fic for the love of the game, for that fic fest, or that one person who comments on every chapter or work. write fic to have fun, but for the love of god, don't write fic to achieve some metric, a weird nebulous idea of 'success'. people don't come to fandom to compete, they see it as a space for community and to gush over their favourite characters. using ai just deprives you of all of that joy, the rush of caring about something to the point where you put effort into it (even if it's staying up until 2 am) and produce a creative piece of work other people have the privilege of enjoying and sharing as well. don't let ai ruin fandom too, when it's already deprived us of so much.
truly the idea of "this scene is (un-)necessary to the story" is such a fundamentally uncurious and anti-art way of engaging with fiction. the story itself is unnecessary, in the sense that all art is unnecessary, because art is not a fucking optimization problem. that's the beauty of it
Let me show you how to do this good.
ohhh man. apparently when you copy+paste stuff directly from claude into ao3 it includes code. which anyone can find. people have found it in big, popular fics in multiple fandoms 😬. also heated rivalry; some of which the authors fervently denied using AI. link to thread.
link to their complete findings for those without twitter
So many bigger fish to fry when it comes to criticizing The Long Game but remember when Shane proposed and then at some game later on Ilya was like oh you have a chain too? And Shane was like yeah and a ring.
So Shane had to buy himself an engagement ring?? In a romance novel?
HUDSON WILLIAMS for WONDERLAND
it’s so sad to me that there’s no geno to shane’s sid. imagine if hayden was russian and alternately was ilya’s best friend and hated his guts. and squirted gatorade in his mouth like he was feeding a baby bird. and ilya punched hayden’s manager in the face in a club in russia. they’re screaming in russian at each other on the bench and then going out getting plastered and singing russian drinking songs together in public. hayden finds out about shane and ilya and is horrified that his best friend has such low standards that he settled for his on-again off-again frenemy. they love each other and they hate each other and they’re kicking each other’s asses. ilya holds hayden as he cries at the olympics. (also, can’t believe they had ilya winning so many cups! as a caps fan, the narrative of ovi as a guy who can’t win compared to sid’s three cups, the emotional weight it carried when he finally did, all of that meant so much more than just winning a bunch of cups effortlessly would have <- she said, copingly) and then hayden plays on a charity team in russia that ilya made called rozycup or something like that. all those things happened btw to any hr fans out there (obviously aside from discovering any secret relationships). they all really happened in the most dramatic, toxic, over-the-top, hot-and-cold relationship there ever was. and it was beautiful…
IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL. GENO/OVI BEST FRENEMYSHIP MY BELOVED… talk about a situationship but the situation is just drama queen 4 guy who loves to bait a drama queen
