SURPRISE! A STORM.

‘don’t worry about staying in,’ they said, ‘the weather will be clear today!’ they said.

weather channels were liars— he should just never leave the comfort of his gym or his home, maybe ask garchomp if he could create some sort of underground passageway from his home to the gym to avoid mishaps like this again. fooled by the forecasters on his television, he decided to take a hike in the geumjeong mountains with little teddy, and only the little teddiursa since he wasn’t expecting anything to happen. it started raining, but they both loved it so they endured it and continued their journey around;

 that was until it had gotten a little too dark for the teddiursa’s liking followed by loud thunder and bright lightning when teddy began wailing.

his only option was to scoop the little pokémon into his arms and sprint for the nearest cave he could find. even when they were out of the rain, attempting to dry off as the storm, teddy wasn’t getting any quieter. the thunder was loud in their ears no matter how much deeper into the cave the gym leader would go, and the flashes of lightning could be seen reflecting on the walls from the entrance. what he was more worried about was the fact that teddy was still young, thus prone to getting sick more often than he should— he needed to find some source of warmth soon.

“hello? is anyone around?” there were only two places someone could appear, and that could be his left where the entrance into the cave was, or to his left where the passageway continues, deeper into the mountain and deeper into pokémon territory. for all tatsuya knew, he could wake up a whole bunch of pokémon and anger them into coming out for an attack, but he was desperate. he stays put, holding a shivering teddiursa to his chest with only a teeny bit of panic laced in his tone. “helllllo! hello?!”

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS.

oh, this was bad.

usually, tatsuya was great at keeping his dragons in check. while they were rowdy and frequently mischievous, he knew how to keep them in line the majority of the time. since he’s lived with dragons for a large portion of his life, he likes to think he’s a good enough dragon tamer... but then a dragon like druddigon, who thinks of himself first before anyone else, proves him wrong and goes against everything he tries to prevent.

today, druddigon managed to anger a snorlax.

from the gym leader’s knowledge of normal snorlax, they were usually peaceful pokémon that don’t get involved in much battling unless provoked. this was one of those rare times where a snorlax was provoked, and it unfortunately was caused by his druddigon stealing its food. had it been any of his other pokémon, he would’ve apologized immediately and try to compromise, but druddigon was practically giving him a look, daring him to do it to see the consequences, so he goes against the snorlax’s trainer and tries fighting for him instead.

“listen, i don’t think it’s a big deal! it was just one little piece!” pathetic. “it’s already gone, there’s nothing i can do! what do you want me to do— put my dragon in a dungeon for punishment?”

ELECTRIFYING.

"are we allowed to be here? it’s dark and unwelcoming— this place doesn’t even look inhabitable.”

he didn’t like the vibe this place was giving off, and he wasn’t even sure if the fact that there were little to no ghost types around was a joke or not. this looked like one of the places that ghost pokémon would love to roam, with dark corners and even darker rooms. the echo was also a bit unsettling, but he was more determined to find this pokémon than he was terrified enough to leave.

as advised by professor go, there was a rotom down in the basement of one of the abandoned warehouses and tatsuya wanted to find it. he was given agave nectar to lure it out, so he’d have to eventually figure out how it works. he doesn’t have an electric type on his team, but he was interested in having one— and since felix happened to be an electric type specialist, there was no one else better suited to accompany him.

“why do electric types like dark, empty places? i thought they’d like places with more ... buzz in their life.”

repeat ball :: any pokémon you raise multiples of? or, what would you want to breed? ( timer ball. )

“right now i’m raising a dratini, so i guess you could say i’m raising dragonite’s evolution line. however, i didn’t raise dragonite from dratini up, as she was a gift from my father when she was still a dragonair. other than that, i’m not really sure if i could raise multiples.” he is a fan of new experiences, and although the pokémon itself would definitely be different, he’s positive that their needs will remain the same. “perhaps i’d enjoy breeding pokémon with more than one evolution line like tyrogue, rockruff or, if given the chance, maybe even the rare cosmog.”

“i don’t know what you mean by lost, but i lose teddy all the time. he’s always running off and it takes a team of three pokémon and myself to find him. if you mean the other lost … then no, nothing like that hasn’t happened yet. i did let go of a pokémon though! i once had a mightyena that i had raised when she was a poochyena, and she was one of the first pokémon i ever caught. i was really attached to her, but eventually she found a family of her own when my family and i were on vacation in another country— she looked so happy being with her new pack, so i released her from the ultra ball i caught her in. i wish i could visit her.”

regular pokeball :: who was your first pokémon and how did you obtain them?

“my first pokémon was garchomp, who was a gible back then, but i already explained how i received him so i’ll tell you how i caught my first pokémon since i never technically had to catch gible. the first pokémon i caught all by myself was zorua, who is now zoroark, who was actually playing a trick on me at the time i caught her and i didn’t know until i tossed a pokéball at her. she was pretending to be a bagon, and when the pokéball hit her forehead she just transformed back into a small zorua and i was … i wasn’t sure what to do since i didn’t know a lot about dark types back then, i almost considered releasing her back into the wild for a few days. she really wanted to stay though, and i didn’t have the heart to let go of her since she was the first pokémon i ever caught. it all worked out though, so i’m quite happy.”

park ball :: what is your favorite district/location to go encounter wild pokémon?

“i’m not saying this because i’m the geumjeong gym leader, but i really like going into the mountains and just seeing what happens. usually pokémon there are fairly strong, which is a good thing in my opinion since there’ll always be training opportunities, as well as good opportunities to catch some nice pokémon. since i’m a dragon type specialist, i’m always on the look out for dragon types there as well.”

The room is slightly smaller than the examination rooms that she’s used to at the center, but it doesn’t mean that it’s any less equipped. She spent a pretty pokedollar getting all this equipment, but it’s well worth it for visits like these. She’s pretty sure tatsuya would have exploded if she told him they had to go to the closest center. Not to mention she wouldn’t want to make him worry anymore. She sets the sleeping eevee on the examination table and prepares a few small pieces of equipment. “Mkay, she feels like she’s running a slight fever. If it’s just that, I can give you a some over the counter medication to help with her recovery. I don’t think it’s anything worse than that, but don’t quote me on it just yet.”

he almost decides to say nothing after, but he couldn't help but find her words just a little alarming. he was the type to also sleep much too late in the night ( most of his pokémon prefer the night, so by default he's learned to prefer it as well ) only to end up sleeping in past his numerous alarms that his dragons break every time they make noise. "how long have you been awake?" now that he got a better look at her, she did look a bit tired; it's not immediately noticeable, so surely it's nothing to worry about, but it's still something.

he's been in her examination room before, a couple times after he had adopted mochi for routine check ups, but it still amazes him how she's been able to turn the room into ones he'd usually find in pokémon centers. when he was studying in the pokémon nursing program, he's always wanted to be able to take care of pokémon the same way pokémon nurses do, but he just knows the basics and a little more thanks to what his mother has taught him— but even then, it's not much since she was a normal doctor, not a pokémon doctor.

he wants to be able to take the pokémon medical program eventually, but he's taking a break for a year before waiting for a chance during the fall semester.

"a slight fever?" he's nearly relieved, because maybe it's no longer as bad as he thought. he shouldn't get his hopes up like this, especially since a proper diagnosis hasn't been made, but he feels a lot less distressed about the entire situation. he may be attentive to his pokémons' wellbeing already, but it's only going to increase tenfold after this. "do you have everything here that would usually be in the pokémon center? you're allowed to have it all here?"

“- so you’re saying if you ever had a daughter or son, and they wanted you to participate in a contest with them, you would just what- whats the thing you say all the time? It’s just not your thing?” Kitae pouted at him. Luckily for Tatsuya, Kitae’s nagging was put to a halt the moment he saw the beautiful Purrloin step into the room. “Oh my god- who is this?” Kitae squealed, immediately bending down to take the kitten into his arms. “She doesn’t have to leave me alone, I’ll give her all the attention she wants.” He beamed, his finger scratching lightly under his chin. “Um- no Nickname yet. I’m usually bad with nicknames, unless you come up with something cute.” He adjusted the Purrloin in his arms, the shining coloring lighting a bulb in his head. “That reminds me- is Noivern around?”

he hides some laughter, shaking his head at kitae's words. "apparently most pokémon want spring babies. my mom said when they're born in nice weather they usually end up being more friendly." of course that's a myth and there's definitely no scientific evidence that it was true, but considering she wasn't technically wrong he liked to think it was true. he perked up at the idea of taking care of an egg, never really being given the chance to, but his eevee, teddiursa and purrloin were still young, and they were a handful as is. "one day i'll take care of a small pokémon egg. maybe in the new year." he says hopefully, shrugging his shoulders.

he almost groans at kitae taking a photo of him, but azurill caught his attention again as she continued giggling.

he couldn't help but laugh at his friend's annoyance; he's been adamant for so many years, he doesn't think anything will change. "yes, i would tell them it's not my thing but i'll cheer the loudest on the stands! besides, if they really want an adult in it they could ask someone like you who's experienced." he watches as purrloin quickly drinks in the attention, putting out all the works on him with batting eyes and purring to match. they will become best friends, he's certain, but what he's not sure of is whether that's a good thing or a bad thing. "oh no, i'm bad with nicknames too. you can't ask me."

tatsuya lifts his head from looking down at azurill, squinting at his friend. "noivern? he's sleeping upstairs— why?"

safari ball :: who is the rarest pokémon you have and how did you obtain them? ( nest ball. )

“rarest pokémon? shiny pokémon are considered rare right? to be honest, i think my rarest pokémon is my best companion, garchomp, who’s got a slightly oddly colored coat? i received him as a gible when i was around six years old, as a birthday gift from my father. garchomp was a rescued pokémon that my father’s colleague found, but apparently they couldn’t take care of gible and gave gible to my father before giving him to me! still the best gift i’ve ever received in my life.”

fast ball :: what’s your favorite pokémon to travel/ride on and why?

“i personally like travelling on salamence’s back, mostly because he’s really stable and doesn’t get distracted in the skies unlike charizard, and garchomp goes too fast and the journey is rough. i still have a bruise from the last time i tried with garchomp so i personally like travelling with salamence best.”

nest ball :: do you prefer raising pokémon up or getting them already fully evolved and why?

“i personally prefer raising pokémon myself, mostly because i feel accomplished when i see them grow up because in a way it’s like they’re your child, and there’s that sense of pride in seeing them develop into the amazing pokémon that they are you know? out of experience, fully evolved pokémon can be harder to train depending on the circumstances. it’s been three years since i met noivern and he still gives me attitude daily, but then on the other hand i met altaria a year ago and she’s probably the most involved in training than the other dragons. i think training a pokémon from the bottom up could be hard work too, especially if it’s something like a magikarp, but it always ends up being really satisfying in the end.”

heal ball :: have any of your pokémon ever gotten injured? how did they heal?

“as someone who frequently trains pokémon to battle if they’d like to, there’s no doubt that they get injured from time to time no matter how much i wish they couldn’t. luckily i’m always prepared with several potions or medicines or even just bandages that will cover up whatever wounds they may get. there was this one time with dragonite where—” he pauses, remembering the number one rule. “she got injured pretty badly. she insists she’s fine now, but i’m scared to battle with her again.”
