the way rr/tierney introduce ilya is so funny to me because when you first see him you're just like jeez this guy is such an asshole why is he like this. and then seconds later it's just like um it's because he has a 1) dead mom 2) who killed herself 3) an abusive dad 4) with alzheimers 5) a brother 6) who verbally abuses him on the phone 7) when ilya refuses to wire him 50 bands all at once 8) all while he spends new years eve all alone in the grossest motel you've ever seen 9) and he's bisexual.

#groundbreaking idea. Heated Rivalry X Divergent AU. Shane is born Abnegation? Erudite?? And transfers to Dauntless. Ilya is such a good fit for Four — Dauntless transfer with crazy abusive dad / dead mom past who is not a cocky asshole brute. Rose or Hayden works well as a parallel for Christina.

Marlow is born Dauntless. Hayden is born Erudite (doesn’t fit in because he’s a moron) and switches to Dauntless. Sveta is born (plot twist) Abnegation with Ilya. Rose is Amity or Candor.

One thing I keep getting stuck on in the fanfiction AI usage discourse is that beyond the water waste and negative environmental impact and willingly using a machine built on theft and claiming that as your own writing and giving them free use of your own ideas and writing that you post in there, using AI to write fanfiction for you necessitates you admitting to AI that you write fanfiction and I just… I could never.

I think a big part of what makes Shane so incredibly compelling as a character is that he doesn’t give into stereotypes that have been perpetuated for so long that many people don’t even recognise them as anything out of the ordinary when they see them. Like, he’s autistic but he is shown to have deep connections to the people closest to him, he’s shown to be a person whose opinion is respected, he’s shown to be a person people are actively drawn to and want to be around, he’s shown to be funny and, yes, a little bitchy. He’s submissive but he’s never weak. He’s a top athlete who’s competative to a fault, never cowers from a challenge, and is a natural leader, and none of those facts are shown to be in conflict with his longing and need to submit. He’s a bottom but he’s overtly masculine, he’s physically large and unafraid to take up space; unafraid to push back. He’s a full fucking person and that is so refreshing to see, especially for those who share some of his traits and have only ever been allowed a representation of themselves that reduces them to that one trait, washing them of anything that adds nuance.

You are forever a genius in my book. This edit was so simple but so beautiful. The perfect selection of lyrics to the scenes. The way, when you layer the music over you can see exactly what was going on in Ilya's brain at that moment, the depressive thoughts, the pain, the sadness, the way he always felt like a disappointment for everyone and is just desperately trying to find a place to fit in.

And the fact that in the song also Lorde sings 'mama I am so scared' because Ilya is scared. He is scared of what his father will say or do if he ever gets outed, no matter what everyone and Shane thinks, Ilya is scared of getting outed, he may look larger than life but that is his way of coping against the constant fear trying to bury him. It's so beautiful. The song, Ilya's journey, the way both these things mesh together to gimme the FEELS.

I love the opening of Heated Rivalry so much because it sets up the show and Shane and Ilya's dynamic so perfectly. From "not the most sociable" Shane Hollander actively going out of his way to interact (because he's already fascinated by him) to "not liked outside of his own locker room" Ilya Rozanov being a bit of a cocky shit (which we pretty quickly realise is a front) to the instant spark of attraction.

Look at this man experiencing freckles and awkward Canadian politeness and developing a fat crush.

My favourite part however is as Shane is leaving clearly uncomfortable with how their conversation went (he does a head tilt like "well, that went horribly")

Ilya notices and that's when he chirps, immediately making Shane more comfortable as he chirps back. And thus, their lovingly teasing, when they say "asshole" and "boring" they really mean "I love you" dynamic is born.

Also, yes, Ilya's lighter doesn't spark until Shane appears which is just an additional beautiful touch.
