You know, even if we could objectively measure suffering and oppression, it would still be a dick move to tell someone that they can't talk about what they're going through because you have it worse.

Friendly reminder that you're not required to publicly take sides in any geopolitical conflict you don't understand.
tags too good to leave in tags @hyperrbolic-orange
also way too valuable to leave in tags! from @carolinanadeau
everyone eat more vegetables NOW!!! and mention the last vegetable you ate in the tags so we're all on the buddy system. I'll start: bok choy
i feel like we've completely killed the ability to just gently tell someone when they're wrong or that their opinions don't pass the vibe check. we have to accommodate every single type of person and all their dogshit opinions OR we have to drive them off the internet, no in between
Young men today being SHOCKED and APPALLED that the girls they're dating are reading dark romance like the closet in my grandma's spare room wasn't totally chockers with Mills and Boon books when I was a kid. "Our generation is RUINED because the young women are reading NASTY PORN" if you saw the shit 50 year old women were reading in the nineties you'd hurl.
Queer leftists abandoning Jews and thinking Muslims are their allies when they're the second/third largest homophobic religious group in the country - behind Jehovah's Witnesses and white Evangelical Protestants depending on the poll - will go down as one of the greatest self-owns ever.
Y'all really need to get over this hurdle of thinking that just because a group is a minority it automatically makes them your ally. The majority of American Muslims have shown over and over again they hate LGBT people (especially LGBT Muslims, since nonbelivers are already going to hell) and they don't want their tax money going to help us. You'd literally be better off casting your luck with Mormons.
Muslims deserve freedom of religion and freedom from intolerance, just like everyone else, but they're not uwu smol beans, they're the second largest religious group on the planet.
If they don't support LGBT people, they don't deserve your support. You wouldn't give it to the Baptist preacher telling you you're going to hell. Have some fucking self-respect.
And can we PLEASE stop with the belief that because Muslims are an oppressed minority in the US, that's true everywhere? Muslims aren't oppressed at all in the Middle East. They're fine. Islam is the state religion of several countries. Jews are not oppressing Muslims worldwide. The idea that Jews have more power than Muslims in Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, etc., is fucking laughable.
Christianity isn't always the oppressor, either. There are marginalized Christians who are being harmed. (In Palestine, that happens a bunch. Christians are very much the minority!)
The demographics in your country apply to your country and that's it. Stop thinking that racial issues will map onto another country half a world away with an entirely different history.
i have understood so many things about online leftist culture by the fact that when i said "your local community has people you will morally and politically disagree with but you cannot lock them out of accessing any tangible service youâre organising" one of the tags responding said "this isnât about proshippers in here youâre not welcome" like. folks. focus with me. some of us are homeless here.
There's a disconnect happening here because the primary function of social media for most casual users is to form a circle of friends around the usual things that friendships are built on: shared interests and lifestyles and ideas of what is important and what is unacceptable. When people are mainly doing leftism on social media, this encourages thinking of leftism as centered around establishing high-minded social clubs.
For anyone who still isn't getting it from someone who helps people IRL: There's a difference between whom you're helping to feed at the mealshare and whom you're choosing to hang out with for fun after the mealshare. You don't have to invite a hungry person with opinions you don't like to play board games with you, but you do have to help keep them from starving if you're serious about leftist organizing.
maybe iâm crazy but iâm not actually convinced you care about human dignity and inalienable rights if your outlook on the world is primarily about who should die and suffer
HAPPY TORK TUESDAY!!!!!!
Possibly my spiciest take is that it's actually good to have people you respect and like that have some dogshit takes.
I think part of what is making young people lonelier, in discussing why they're increasingly isolated, is that they're so afraid of meeting someone who doesn't hold their same beliefs, and instead of being just core beliefs it is kinda ancillary shit.
It's actually okay to disagree even on social topics! Even on some political ones! But I mean, online you can start with "i love this mutual but they have a really bad/uninformed opinion about x media"
I know this is IMMEDIATELY going to be taken in bad faith, and yes babygirl, you are so right, I DO want you to go make best friends with both the KKK grand wizard AND your nearest nazi leader.
But seriously, as someone who has spent two decades doing community organization: finding ways to connect with different people is so so so important. There are people i follow here who ate 80% smart and their brain falls out of their head 20% of the time and that is GOOD FOR MY MENTAL ECOSYSTEM AND GOOD FOR LEARNING HOW TO BE A PERSON
LET'S ALL GO PISS ON THE POOR
Itâs also good to assume you probably are the friend whose brain falls out 20% of the time.
We all have blind spots, assumptions, and dogshit take from time to time. They canât all be winners.
The ânobodyâ scene in the odyssey is absolutely not just a clever punâitâs a character defining moment for Odysseus because he refuses to be nobody. He devised an incredible plan that worked and he could have saved his men and returned home much sooner but he just had to yell to the cyclops that he isnât nobodyâheâs Odysseus, king of Ithaca so now Poseidon knows who to curse which severely fucks up the rest of the journey.
The ânobodyâ scene highlights both Odysseusâs cleverness but also his arrogance and those two traits define Odysseus throughout the entire story. Itâs a foundational aspect of Odysseusâs character and cutting the scene displays a shocking level of ignorance and disregard for the themes in the source material.
i just donât know if that many of us need to be on the roads driving. we should live in a world where more people can sit that one out
im confiscating bob dylan and leonard cohen and simon & garfunkel and janis ian and joan baez and neil diamond and lou reed the mamas and papas and the band from the antisimetic music nerds on here who love to say casually horrific things about jews and have ZIONISTS KYS in their bio while making their blog revolve around musicians who are/were most definitely zionists
.
genuinely saw a 'zionists kys' blog with a Leonard Cohen header ????
I think it got nuked though

i think people really under sell the physical side effects of mental health disorders sometimes. like sure the depression and anxiety may be 'just in your head' but when what's in your head happens to disrupts your sleep schedule and prevent you from going outside regularly and eating consistent meals and exercising and generally taking care of your body. well it sure takes its toll huh.
by the way. it never is too late to decide you want to be happy. the woman who helped me get hormones didnt start hers until she was 70, and i met her at 73, beautiful and smiling - and told me that the last three years of her life had been her favorite. your favorites might be ahead of you too. why not hang around and find out?
âI donât care if men benefit from feminism, they shouldnât have to benefit from feminism to support itâ okay, but they do, though. everyone benefits from feminism. you donât live in a hypothetical, you live in the real world where feminism has real material benefits for the men in your life. so are you gonna take that in stride and move forward, or are you gonna keep pitching a fit that feminism not being Girls Onlyâ˘ď¸ means itâs tainted.
