Ex-Beatles Solo Albums through the McLennonlens: Part 6 - Wild Life (1971)
Previous instalments
Mumbo: I'm so high :)
Bip Bop: I'm so high :))
Love Is Strange: Still high, but also missing you.
Wild Life: I'm pretty worried about you.
Some People Never Know: Why did you say all that stuff? What did I do wrong? (By the way, you're the only person I'll admit to being wrong to).
I Am Your Singer: Gotta write a love song for the wife to sing, god knows she's earned it. I'm kind of phoning it in, though.
Tomorrow: Felt guilty about phoning it in, so here's a proper one. With a pointed message to you, of course.
Dear Friend: Why did you say all that stuff? Unfortunately I can't stop missing and loving you.
The Boys of Dungeon Lane listening party: Paul blessed me with freebies! There’s also an A3 sized poster of the postcard.
There were about 25 people there. One lady I felt a kinship with bc I overheard her earnestly asking someone if they loved Paul.
I have a LOT of thoughts about the album but can’t trust myself. I’m foaming a bit like John Lennon when there wasn’t a lyric sheet to Ram.
But We Two. *whale sounds* That is a song about John.
And there are sure are some lyrics in that song.
Anyway, I’m getting it on Tidal on Friday and we can review.
"His spirit's sort of still in mine-- in me. And I'm very glad about that." PAUL MCCARTNEY, May 2026
I’ve signed myself up for a The Boys of Dungeon Lane listening party on the 26th May, at the behest of Paul McCartney via email. He’s forever emailing me these days. I get a free tote bag and postcard! It’s in a tiny record shop, and I have no idea what sort of experience this will be or who else will be there, but I’m doing it.

I was curious as to your theory about the "promise"?! I saw your post and I wanted to hear about it!
Hi anon! My theory—or thought—is that Paul at least feels, or remembers, that he and John made a promise to each other to be in each other’s lives forever. Whether that was as friends, closeted lovers, writing partners, or soulmates (or all of the above).
In “Get Enough,” Paul sings:
It was a time when we walked by the docks I told you, “I need you all of my life” And watching the tugs rolling by together Do you remember?
I'm 100% sure this is a reference to a real event that occurred in their early days together. Paul writes about himself saying "I need you all my life" but I've no doubt it was mutual, otherwise it wouldn't mean so much to him. And to be fair, they managed to achieve that for a long time. Their success as Beatles, and the unusual life it allowed them to live, meant they achieved that. By that, I'm mostly suggesting living together as closeted lovers or romantic partners (on top of everything else). Until, of course, John left him for Yoko and broke that pact/promise, something that now, after the release of Man On The Run audiobook and film is quite obviously something that broke Paul's heart.
He admits to that heartbreak very plainly these days, and even to waiting for John to change his mind, to decide that the thing with Yoko was a fling and come back to him. He even mentions putting off building a table up in their Scotland farm during that period, one he eventually built when he realized John wasn't coming back after all.
That table even pops up in “Hey Diddle”:
I wouldn’t make her Her wooden table I wouldn’t care
The table story was only shared publicly for the first time in the Man On The Run audiobook, and honestly that detail sealed the deal for me. It paints a picture of Paul living with Linda but still emotionally waiting for John to come back. Only when that hope finally faded did he begin building a life with Linda properly—symbolized, in a very literal way, by building that table.
I’ve no doubt that Paul was nevertheless waiting, in one way or another, for John throughout much of the 1970s. After all, they had a pact. They made a promise. We’ll never know what might have happened if things had turned out differently.
In the new song, Paul sings:
We met at Forthlin Road And wrote a secret code To never be spoken I stand by what I said The promise that I made Will never be broken
Paul admits this verse is about John. Geographically, the way I understand it, Dungeon Lane leads down to the Cast Iron Shore, which in my mind is exactly the kind of place where the scene by the docks in Get Enough takes place. It all seems to speak to the same memory—a promise he (they) made, kept secret in code, that he still stands by and never broke (after all, John was the one who broke the pact. Paul never actually 'left' John). These days, with John gone, I believe it means that he still considers John his soulmate and perhaps his first—albeit secret—love.

Welcome
In 2021 Paul McCartney released his book The Lyrics which contains 154 of his lyrics. Each is accompanied by some discussion of the song's origins and what it means to Paul. The book also contains many photos.
After the title page, the following quote is given a two page spread to itself:
To Thine own self be true. --William Shakespeare, Hamlet, Act I, Scene 3
Shakespeare's sonnets number 154. They are famously homoerotic.
This blog is simply going to juxtapose each song lyric with the sonnet of the same number. Most of them have no obvious connections, but a few make the hairs on my neck stand up. I'm going to share them all for completeness.

I wrote a fic! Mclennon running around in Paris in 1961 with yearning, angst and eventual happy ending hurray. Ty to @beatleskinkmeme for organising another amazing secret santa! My to-read list is long, which is just how i like it.
you know what I think about every time I watch the tos star trek movies is how much paul loves star trek (to the point of having plotted out a whole galactic battle of the bands movie starring wings he wanted gene roddenberry to direct) like walk with me here
imagine it's june 1982 right before your 40th birthday and a new star trek movie comes out and you're so pumped bc you fucking love star trek and you probably go and see it in theaters and then you have to sit there and watch one half of the gay soulmate situationship die tragically while his boyfriend watches and can't do anything. I would have left the theater and walked home in silence.
Happy Beatlemas @heartsinthebasement! Here is your Secret Santa gift!

A prompt fill from the @beatleskinkmeme: The first time John and Paul have LSD together and do "the eye contact thing," they notice a magical string connecting their hearts. Dear @heartsinthebasement, you said you "like fics that deal with them struggling with their sexuality, or having to come to terms with who they are," and I hope this story delivers this for you, along with some weird psychedelia and geodesic dome action! And a happy ending, of course. I wish you and everyone all the best for the new year, whether that means a YES in the right place, a polaroid of your fucked-up face, meeting the boy with the pink carnation, stepping out, growing old together, taking your friend to bed, or being one of the beautiful people!
