maybe i'm just biased but brother they were perfect the way they were, it wasn't broken and it didn't need fixing

like that's why we're so pissed about your work now because it lacks the structure and character it had back then

the glow is nice ig but like the anatomy is so much worse which is really a bummer for this piece in particular because it was originally the framework for the composition in the original and that's completely missing in the draw (like this is a perfect example of how rachel's 'intentionally broken' anatomy ykwim? like it wasn't perfect anatomy but it was way more STRIKING and served the composition a lot more, like in Hades' shoulders and Persephone's legs and hair)

persephone's flowers are gone , hades' laurel crown is gone

it's too dark and it feels like the vignette effect was used purely to cover up mistakes / anatomical issues and not because it was actually necessary

i'm sorry for picking on rachel's newer posts but every time she redraws one of these old pieces it feels like such a disrespect to the original work, like these are pieces i STUDY FROM and still thoroughly enjoy from the original series, so seeing them redrawn like this is painful

and the worst part is most people (i.e. casual viewers) probably don't even realize this is a redraw to begin with, because she posted it on its own as a promotion for vol 10 and a lot of casual consumers of LO aren't aware of the older art pieces that existed way back in the day

i can understand wanting to redraw older pieces (i do it all the time, it's a great exercise!) but this is one of the few times where the artistic development has gone so backwards that the redrawn pieces feel like the work of someone making a DTIYS redraw that doesn't capture the spirit of the original vs. an actual redraw of the original work by the original creator herself

like if this WERE a DTIYS piece from someone else that would be FINE but it's NOT and that's what's so baffling and upsetting about it

i've said this many times before and i'll say it again, it's giving rcdart and i'm sobbing, this is a hate crime towards me specifically (/j)

i'm sure i could give this repetition benefit of the doubt and call it 'symbolic' but that interpretation of intention doesn't make up for how full of shit these two both are and how stupid rachel must have thought we were to try and convince us that these two self-absorbed assholes could possibly be compassionate or kind

like. if someone were reading this out of context they would rightfully assume that hades just choked his wife.

and he did, btw. he choked her after he did a dream dive which EVERYONE KNEW could result in him getting possessed by his dad and yet they did it ANYWAYS and shocker, his dad possessed him and proceeded to choke the shit out of her

so while it wasn't technically Hades who choked her, it is absolutely fucking NUTS rachel put this scene and the aftermath of Hades helping her cover up her bruises in her comic that originally chose to highlight the systemic oppression of women through Persephone being sexually assaulted

and again, it bears repeating, Persephone can heal people. Including herself. So why in the world is showing her bruises from where Kronos-Hades choked her as well as an extended sequence of Hades helping her cover them up in any way necessary?

like either Rachel once again forgot she was writing about greek gods or she's literally that tone deaf

especially when she followed it up with THIS FUCKING PANEL which btw, has nothing to do with the bruising! but it sure SOUNDS like it does, even WITH the context, because he says this IMMEDIATELY AFTER SHE SAYS NO ONE WILL BE ABLE TO TELL SHE'S BRUISED-

some more 'fun' facts about episodes 251 and 252

first up, in Episode 251 (which opens with Persephone getting the shit choked out of her by Kronos-Hades) when Persephone actually reveals her bruises, like many of her conversations with Hades in which she's the victim of violence, the conversation IMMEDIATELY shifts to being about Hades and his trauma.

for a comic that Rachel Smythe herself claimed she wanted to use as a means to "vindicate" the voices of sexual assault survivors, specifically women-

"Who do you know that hasn’t been sexually assaulted? The number is depressingly low, right? Why is that? There is no short answer or an easy fix. I have a platform. I can tell a story that will hopefully educate and help others feel acknowledged and vindicated." - Rachel Smythe, in an interview with Gossamer Rainbow (2018)

but speaking of sexual assault, let's skip ahead to Episode 252, which commits one of the biggest sins and most egregious lies Rachel has ever tried to get away with in front of her own audience-

this. is literally not true. like, the comic itself - a comic which rachel clearly has not read or revisited in the slightest - makes it VERY clear that persephone did NOT in fact find apollo handsome, or feel special when he forcibly grabbed her by the shoulders for a photo

Even Hera herself, the woman who is now connecting with Persephone over their shared trauma, picked up on this shit ages ago. And yet Rachel, the LITERAL CREATOR OF THIS COMIC, seems to have forgotten that.

but hey, it's not like that one panel means that much in the grand scheme of things. it's not like Rachel deliberately tried to retcon the sexual assault or Persephone's feelings towards Apollo at all just for the sake of contextualizing Persephone's conversation with Hera in S3. so i guess i ought to cut her some slack. i mean, if she DID do that, then that would be pretty fucked up, wouldn't it?
