I am not that old, and I didn't have a smartphone until probably late high school. For most of my life, many if not most people were not walking around with a magic internet machine in their pocket that they pulled out and used constantly for everything.

Happy migraine and headache awareness month. This may seem like a minor terminology nitpick, but it’s a serious misconception about migraine: nausea is an actual migraine symptom, not a thing that happens because of the headache. When people with migraine experience nausea during attacks, it’s not because the pain is so bad (the idea that migraine is always excruciatingly painful is also a myth), it’s because migraine causes a lot of symptoms that aren’t pain, including nausea.

This goes for other symptoms as well: although pain can definitely contribute to people’s experiences of these symptoms, fatigue and brain fog are actual migraine symptoms, not just pain symptoms.

This is also your friendly PSA that nausea is not a normal tension headache symptom, if you frequently get nauseous with your headaches, you almost certainly have migraine.

The death of school Computer Labs, and actually teaching kids how to use the computer.

In my last years in the Australian Taxation Office when older Gen Z were just starting to get management positions, was when I started to notice that these younger people didn't have skills Millennials have always mocked our Baby Boomer colleagues for lacking.

It's not even their fault. They went through school with the myth of the "Digital Native". They weren't taught typing skills, they weren't taught how to convert a .PDF, they weren't taught how to make a digital slide show, but they sure were taught to use Adobe Photoshop as though it isn't a comparatively niche use skill.

Humans didn't evolve to use the computer, or computer programs, this is tool use and tool use is transmitted culturally... We have to teach it to the next generation or the knowledge is lost in as little as one generation. We already knew this and invented the myth of the Digital Native anyway.

Gen Z got fucked over, Gen alpha are being fucked over.

If I may, teachers desperately want to teach these things but are given no time and space in the curriculum. Digi-tech curriculums are more focused on the more advanced ideas of coding or using programs rather than really basic skills. There's also an element of (not to sound incredibly fucking old here) "I don't need to do that, boomer" from students when we try to incidentally teach some basic computer skills like keyboard shortcuts or digital file organisation.

Honestly, that level of actual taught computer skills haven't been a thing in schools since the 80s. Even millennials (at least the younger half) weren't taught computer skills - but what we did get was a lot of time on proper computers/laptops that required picking up those skills. There was no autosave - gotta learn to save. Search functions a bit dogshit? gotta learn to organise my files. I learnt to touch type from typing stories so often and playing mmos that required I learn touch typing or get demolished by a meteor. A lot of us learned because we wanted to learn and all the things we could do on computers required all those skills.

Now, students start being taught tech on ipads because they are considered "easy" levels of technology to get them to learn on, but ipads are made to make a lot of those old skills unneeded so once they get to proper computers there's been no real skills to build off.
