i think the most upsetting thing about american-flavor puritanism is how fucking patronizing it is. it's 2026 but the whole world still has to deal with a cultural hegemony grown from the gnarled vestiges of victorian-era paternalism. tax-paying adults with passports and the right to vote are treated like wayward children because of the antiquated idea that authorities must protect the weak minds of the unwashed masses from depravity and corruption. the average american can send a fellow citizen to the chair, but they can't piss in a ditch without being declared an outlaw. american entertainment media is saturated with sex, but you can't talk about it online without getting your account suspended. it's such blatant censorship at a universal scale, but because sexual content is framed as inherently dangerous, this restriction on basic adult autonomy, this blanket denial of moral and intellectual adulthood, can be reframed as protection, an expression of care, a moral duty. Something that I think Steven Universe did that was really funny and underappreciated was titling their lighter filler episodes like "Mega-Diamonds: Shit Gets Real" and then their plot heavy episodes like "Lion Goes to the Beach :)"

Oh people had countdowns to the dramatically titled episodes specifically and it was wrong every time. "Oh maybe this time it'll be heavy and plot relevant for real" they'd say, and they'd be treated to a cute no-stakes episode about getting pizza. Meanwhile some episode titled some shit like "Barnyard Hijinks" that people wrote off as skippable would have a major plot twist reveal.

You have got to stop peddling the idea that your brain isn't developed until you're 25 or in your 30s, which is what I'm seeing now. You have got to stop supporting bogus and debunked scientific claims that are used to deny people their rights and autonomy by constantly raising the threshold for who's considered an adult and capable of making important decisions.

Not only is it stunting our youth by taking away vital milestones that help them actually develop their brains and grow as people and adults, it's also being used to do things that restrict what medical procedures someone can consent to, like denying HRT and other gender affirming care to people under 25.
