I love the idea that Kaz's superpower is everything is according to plan. And having contingency on top of contingency premeditated. But I headcanon he's just mastered riffing. Through the books he's loosing his grip just like everyone else but he doesn't have the luxury of admitting it because he's in charge of 5 teens just like him who he would loose control of with panic if they didn't trust him. They are at constant risk of flipping the script on him when he's doubted, so having them believe "oh kaz probably planned this the whole time it's gonna be fine" is the thinnest thread of keeping them all together and it unreliable at best.

These kids weren't long time friends before the start, Kaz is just an excellent magician, redirecting attention from the dominoes that don't topple.

Just thinking about how Kaz heard her laugh and wanted to bottle it and get drunk off it every night and how that terrified him. Just thinking about how he was broken but not so broken that he couldn’t pull himself into some semblance of a man for her. Just thinking about how Kaz ‘Dirtyhands’ ‘Bastard of the Barrel’ Brekker, someone who’s trauma and need to survive had made him cynical and practical and then one look at her with her eyes closed and the sunlight on her face was enough to make him believe in magic. Just thinking about how she is the only person he takes his gloves off in front of. Just thinking about how he is drowing and all he can think about is her and how he needs to live just so he can make sure she survives and so he can thank her. Just thinking about how he doesn’t make her get the dregs tattoo because he respects her and doesn’t want to be the one to mark her again. Just thinking about how this boy has so much trauma and pain in his life, and he tries over and over again to heal and show her that he can be there for her and love her in the way they both deserve. Just thinking about how he literally brought back her parents and gave her a boat so she could go and live her dreams.

Just thinking about how Inej always notices Kaz’s eyes, whether they are a bitter coffee brown or the softer colour of strong tea in the sunlight. Just thinking about how she always believed he was worth saving. Just thinking about how she views the items and freedom that he gives her as geraniums, her parents symbol of their love. Just thinking about how after he shows her he is trying, she knows without a doubt that they belong together. Just thinking about how she spent years on Kaz’s windowsill as he planned and fed his crows. Just thinking about how even though it is hard for her too, she still is willing to try if he is. Just thinking about how she has so much faith in the person he is, and how she knows he is what Ketterdam needs.

Just thinking about how no matter how broken they are they fight their way out together because that is what they do. Just thinking about how they are the two deadliest people in Ketterdam and yet can barely touch each other with both of them keeling over. Just thinking about them.
