Oh, and his acting choices. Iāll give you an example. When I got back from Blackwater and I was on the rock and burnt to bits, we rehearsed that scene. And this is a man Iāve been breaking my back for for a long time. His first line was, āI thought you were dead.ā And most actors, theyād stand up and thereād be a moment of recognition, that one of the family had returned. Stephen decides heāll sit down, with his back to me, and he just looked over his shoulder for a moment when he says, āI thought you were dead.ā He gave me nothing! That was really brave, because most would go for sympathy or emotion, but Stephen has no desire to be liked. He just doesnāt give a fuck! But for me, itās brilliant for the scene! Because thatās how my character feels, like, āIs that all Iām going to get?!ā Itās a wonderful, wonderful thing we have, that power shift. Stephenās a joy, a joy.
Liam Cunningham about Stephen Dillane
āIām 31, and I left drama school here when I was 22, so I donāt know why itās all happening now,ā says Fassbender, sliding into the sofa seat of a West London restaurant, shuffling up next to Cunningham. āWonāt be long before youāre under fuckinā house arrest, like Brad Pitt,ā says Cunningham, gently needling him. Michael Fassbender: Into the spare bedroom of my waterfront flat in Belfast.
Liam Cunningham: So every morning, we get up, he puts on the porridge and we start running the fuckinā scene. At one thereās a knock on the door and weāre handed the food, and the door shuts again. We go on till six or seven oāclock until Steve turns up, looks at our progress, gives us some notes, and then off we go again. Running this scene 15 or 20 times a day for five days.
Michael Fassbender: So when we arrived on set we just went straight into it [slaps his hand, clapper-board style]: Take one, 23 minutes, right through. We did four takes, and they used the fourth.

The London-based Fassbender, meanwhile, who admits obliquely to being not quite single and not yet married, says that he was more than happy to be sold as a rippling baby-oiled sex object in 300. āEvery time we were doing squats in those leather Speedos I used to say: āWell, thatās the pink pound covered anyway!ā ā he says, chuckling wildly, and sending Cunningham into paroxysms of laughter.
The two men try to steel themselves for a serious conclusion. Fassbender looks over at Cunningham and asks: āHave we forgotten to tell him anything?ā Cunningham shrugs, smirks, then adds: āOther than the fact that weāre lovers, no.ā
