May 25th, when you need to know where your towel is, and to demand a hard boiled egg.
Started watching Due South with the kids over lockdown. Fortunately they love it.
But we just watched "Juliet is Bleeding" and I'd remembered it was a good episode and that Carrie Anne Moss was in it, but not that it was heartbreaking! Noooo!
But it also means I have to go and reread the amazing "Kowalski is Bleeding" by Speranza, which is even more heartbreaking and amazing.

If I told you how many times I'd read this, I wouldn't have time to read it again.
Gotta go, need to spend time with Monseigneur ..
Solarpunk Action Week 2020 -- Round 2!
Hey there, space cadets! Last month’s Solarpunk Action Week took off like a barn fire and exceeded Solarpunk Action Week 2019 by easily a factor of 10, with tons of people getting food planted, learning new skills, building things, reducing waste, spreading information, taking direct action, and getting their neighborhoods and workplaces organized. So we’ll be doing a followup to coincide with springtime in parts of the southern hemisphere! Mark those calendars for September 20th-26th!
What is Solarpunk?
Solarpunk is a movement in speculative fiction, art, fashion and activism that seeks to answer and embody the question “what does a sustainable civilization look like, and how can we get there?” The aesthetics of solarpunk merge the practical with the beautiful, the well-designed with the green and wild, the bright and colorful with the earthy and solid. Solarpunk can be utopian, just optimistic, or concerned with the struggles en route to a better world — but never dystopian. As our world roils with calamity, we need solutions, not warnings. Solutions to live comfortably without fossil fuels, to equitably manage scarcity and share abundance, to be kinder to each other and to the planet we share. At once a vision of the future, a thoughtful provocation, and an achievable lifestyle.”
And what is Solarpunk Action Week?
Solarpunk Action Week is a week dedicated to taking radical environmentalist and anticapitalist action to make the world a better place. Previous Action Weeks have seen people starting gardens, learning new skills, making and repairing things, reducing waste, spreading information, getting involved in community organizing.
All you have to do participate is begin or continue with an environmentalist, anticapitalist project and talk about it in the #SolarpunkActionWeek tag; it’ll get a lot of signal boosts to connect with other people around the world doing the same.
- - -
The previous Solarpunk Action Week saw a lot of individual actions, and those were incredible to witness, but we’re at our most powerful when we come together, so your homework for the next 5 months between now and the end of September is: Get organized! If we were able to do so much as individuals back in March, just imagine what you could get done rolling into Solarpunk Action Week with a crew ready to go.
If you’re new to organizing, here are some great places to get started:
The Industrial Workers of the World (which has that good good Environmental Unionist Caucus)
Food Not Bombs
Mutual Aid Disaster Relief
Transition Initiative
Buy Nothing Project
Food Not Lawns
Can’t find anything in your area? Start something yourself!
Got 1 or 2 friends? You can start an affinity group
Guide to small-town organizing
7 steps to starting a Food Not Bombs group
Wet’suwet’en supporter toolkit
And I’m sure people will link to all sorts of other great projects and resources in the rebagels, so keep an eye on the notes!
What can I do?
So many things! You can check out the #SolarpunkActionWeek tag to see what others have done in the past for inspiration. The two dinguses organizing these events have got resource tags full of just so many things you might could do and how to get started on them, here and here respectively. And here are some other fun ideas:
Learn how to become a street medic
Learn how to repair clothes
Regrow food plants from kitchen scraps
Recycle scrap fabric into yarn
20 plants to grow indoors
Make your apartment more energy efficient
Build a beautiful and functional vertical garden out of your literal garbage
Other gardening resources
How to make or repair anything
How to organize your community and workplace
How to fight fascism
- - - - - - - - -
Get out there and invent the future, space cadets, because we have a world to win. I know y’all are gonna make me proud; y’all always do.

Last year I read fanfiction for the first time and it ruined my fucking life. I literally don’t have hobbies anymore.
I have good news, my friend. Fanfic qualifies as a hobby.
Oh thank god. Update, everyone: I have one hobby.
You can read it on a exercise bike. I have huge calves now though.
I paddled safely in the shallow waters of Buffy fan fiction about 12 years ago, gave it up for lotr online and children.
Then in April I got addicted to Lucifer, went looking for fannish stuff when it took a break, found Astolat and ao3, then have spend the last few months reading. And reading.
I’m at the point where I sometimes feel I need to write a guide to fanfic, pointing out how easy it is to get sucked from fandom to fandom by following your favourite authors.
P.s. I would link the fic to blame for my addiction, but while very funny and in character, it’s also really nsfw.

It's this one. It's amazing. Having a complete astolat reread at mo, and this is still a favourite. It's so good how the unholy glee of the character shines through!
What a fantastic poster. Not a bad film too, I suppose…
This seems like a an apt time to recommend one of my favourite ever fics
Killing Elvis - David Hines
“Summary:
Dr. Liu,
Got your final report yesterday on Project LV-426. I'm amazed. Great work all around. It's been forwarded to the Chair, our friends at the Pentagon, the Defense Appropriations Committee, and DARPA. The acid-resistant armor is something that should really catch their eye.
We're expecting some big grant money from this.
Burke
Burke,
Did you read even the executive summary of my report? There are some interesting biomaterials that we could work with, but I stressed, multiple times, that this creature is far too dangerous to even consider using in military research projects. It's aggressive, stupid, vicious, aggressive, impossible to train, and did I mention aggressive?
. . .their limbs work on hydraulic principles and operate under pressure, which is why they splurt like a popped water balloon when they get hit in those Marine camera feeds we saw. A slight wound to a limb takes them right the hell out of commission, and now your troops have to deal with an insanely aggressive and stupid xenomorphic K-9 unit that oh by the way IS BLEEDING ACID.”
It’s a modern epistolary fic, it’s smart, it’s funny. Read it!
Happy Towel Day everyone!
If I ever get a literary tattoo, it'd probably be the opening lines of this book. In troubling times it can be nice to realise how small we really are (unless you're Zaphod Beeblebrox, truly a really terrific and great guy)

Well this goes straight into the inspiration pile for the *ballet dancer* bucky fic....
Look at these birbs
R O T U N D
Borb
Look, I can’t help it, it’s just how my brain works. I see these magnificent examples of birdhood and I am immediately reminded of this lovely piece of fanfic (sort of) fluffiness. There are birds, recovery, (and maybe a tiny bit of kinkiness)
Field Guide to Common Birds in New York City by Toft
Person of Interest, Harold/John
What if Steve Rogers were real...
These fics all place Captain America in our world, or use our history to more firmly bolster Cap as an historical figure. There’s probably a proper word for it, but I have no idea. I do like it tho.
Steve Rogers Might Wear Tights But He’s Not Your Pin Up Girl by Bucky Barnes (author unknown)
(thanks to @aquamarvel for helping me find this again after my chromebook ate it).
So many good things in this, the best being that the course is held at City College of New York, consistently a radical and forward thinking academic institution.
Steve Rogers at 100: Celebrating Captain America On Film by eleveninches, febricant, hellotailor, M_Leigh, neenya, tiggrmilk
Of course there would have been many, many films made about Captain America. This is brilliant, wonderful artwork, proper analysis, delightful interludes, Tony Stark being Tony Stark.
All the Angels and the Saints by Speranza
The work that had me completely convinced that Steve Rogers was absolutely a socialist. There’s the Spanish Civil War, Little Blue Books, pulpy sci fi, Bertrand Russell. And it’s Speranza, so obviously amazing.
AAAgh help!
My chromebook has deleted all my fanfics that I downloaded before I got the hang of book marking. I'm looking for a fic that's written as an essay by Bucky, where he's taking a history course at a community college and arguing the toss about the real Steve Grant Rogers with the lecturer. It's called something like "Captain America is not your..."
@thestuckylibrary any ideas?

Lewis
Getting into the Lewis fandom was like the first time I was offered a beetroot cake. I bit into it, expecting something soggy and unappealing, and instead found one of the most delicious things I've ever encountered.
If age difference is a squick for you (though I hasten to add, both characters are old enough and ugly enough to know what they're doing) then there's some awesome gen too.
Another Thing to Fall - Suzan Lovett
I love a solidly plotted case fic, and this is excellent. The tone is spot on, the pacing and plot tight, and there's a thoughtful, lovely friends to lovers thread that compliments the whole thing.
Gorgeousness
Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell is one of my favourite books, and this fanfiction, set post novel, just nails the tone and style. (There’s even footnotes! I love footnotes!)
Brilliant
Ransom In A Voice - kvikindi
Living in faerie comes, as must be expected, with certain risks. Jonathan Strange is surely the most likely to fall foul of them, and Mr. Norrell the most likely to take it entirely personally.
Having just seen the trailer for Good Omens, I thought I would have a look at how many stories were under this tag before the show was on. There’s been a fair few added in the last year, probably since the show (or casting?) was announced, but as someone still quite new to modern fandom I’m looking forward to seeing how (or, to be fair, if) it develops.
In the meantime I found this rather lovely story there.
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
It is now early February (I think about two months on, should have dated the first post..) and Good Omens is due in Spring.
We're now at
And this excellent outsider pov is a day old
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
It's Sunday, and, crucially, not January anymore, so I'm going to make an effort! Let's read about James Buchanan Barnes getting his groove on.
When I started this blog, I may have made some comments about creating themed recommendation posts. Now that January is over (I don't really do January, and at the end I forgive myself for that and then get on with any resolutions I've chosen. January does not count), I've finally been struck by inspiration.
Bucky Barnes Dances
I've surprised myself a little here. I thought my first stucky recs list would be recovery fics, and these are, but tangentially. They’re about Bucky dancing.
Head Over Heels by Chiyume (very E)
A friendly wager from Natasha leads to Bucky discovering parts of himself he hadn’t known he’d lost. In high heels made for dancing. Fun and frank and entertaining. There’s one quote I especially like
““Don’t tell us what you want,” Maria says. She stops in front of Bucky, and her tone suddenly goes soft as she continues, “Tell us what you need. ”
Bucky frowns at her. What he needs?
“I don’t— What do you mean?” he asks.
“To say that you want something makes it sounds selfish,” Maria clarifies. “Something material and insignificant, and that’s not what this is. This is something that you need. Something which, if you’re left without it, will make your life considerably worse, right?”“
(erm, possibly not your cup of tea if you don’t like cross dressing)
Captain America's Finds His Fella
Told from the point of view of a chorus girl in Captain America’s revue, this whole series is utterly adorable. You’ll need tissues (and a toothbrush to prevent rot from the fluff). Ballet Dancer Bucky may be my favourite.
I have had an appalling 36 hours.
So I am reading for comfort and cheering up. And when I need that, I go to Astolat.
It’s definitely been a two fic day.
Cursed - Astolat
E
The Witcher
It starts quite dark and ends fluffy. Which you wouldn’t expect from Witcher perhaps.
Reconcilable Differences
E
Smallville, Superman, Teen Titans
Ohhhh god I love this sooooooooooooooooo much. It’s in my top ten five fan fics of all time. It’s in my top 20 of anything I’ve ever read. And I’ve read a lot. Many, many, lots.
IT MAKES ME VERY HAPPY. I mean it’s all going wonderfully, lab engineered superteen trying to find his place in the world and then there’s this bit with World of Warcraft that just adds a sparkler to the top of the cake. (Tries desperately not to give away any spoilers)
