A loner, Grace lives in his shabby bachelor pad in the upper floors of his modest San Francisco apartment. He keeps largely to himself, is single, has no pets, and is rather few in friends -- though that isn't to say he has any difficulty making them.
Despite his penchant for berating himself in a comical fashion, Grace is often more reasonable with those around him. Indeed, he is a favorite among the student cohort, his amiable and light humor in addition to his genuine interest in his students' academic progress making him difficult to dislike.
However, he has tempered his life in many ways, largely in his career and his personal life, running from research and all deep connection. After ostracizing himself in spectacularly humiliating fashion from his scientific peers, Grace has taken to living more quietly especially in regards to his professional opinions/insights. This, of course, rather dampens his spark in life for always has he been a curious and intellectually voracious soul, his head forever in the clouds and his focus often geared to questions and mind-turning queries. This inquisitiveness of his has often put a strain on his relationships, those who dare to venture close often pinning him as 'flighty' or 'spacey', his mental seemingly too-tunneled on the abstract.
𝐎𝐂𝐂𝐔𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 & 𝐇𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘.
Doctoral Scientist in Molecular Biology. Before he was ostracized by the scientific community, Grace was a researcher and scientist who needled in on the possibility of life beyond Earth. This led him to doggedly pursue the publishing of a thesis that rejected the belief that all life needed water, becoming an absolute laughing stock amongst his peers.
8th Grade Science Teacher. Teaching at Grover Cleveland Middle School, Grace is a very overqualified science teacher. But at least the kids love him -- hooray!
Project Hail Mary Scientist and Astronaut. Approached by Eva Stratt, leader of Project Hail Mary, Grace unwittingly finds himself playing her second-in-command to find an an answer to the Astrophage problem -- that is, the organism eating away at not just their sun, but thousands beyond their own, threatening life on Earth and abroad. Though he melded into his role as scientist for the group well enough, he was more than beyond reluctant to board the spacecraft that would take them to the Tau Ceti system, a journey that would take 12 light-years to complete. The trip was always designed to be one-way -- that is, those aboard would have enough fuel to reach their destination and send their research back to Earth, but they themselves would die in space. Horrified, Grace opposed emphatically to boarding the vessel, and as a consequence, was restrained and forcibly induced into a coma. When he comes to, it is alone on the Hail Mary spacecraft, his memory in pieces, fuzzy like cotton and candy-fizz around the edges. In time, he comes to realize that he alone must find a way to destroy the sunkiller and save humanity and all life as they know it -- that is, before he comes across some extraterrestrial help through Rocky, an unlikely friend.
