I wanted to make the extreme end of the "Squishy Mage" cliche so i made a Slime Girl Wizard.

Cue was a pet gelatinous cube for a young wizard in training and the wizard would feed it her old notes, small magic crystals, roommates textbooks when she was mad, and failed but harmless potion experiments... and then one day a whole ass slimegirl with knowledge of the arcane popped out of the tank she was kept in.

Trying to get a few more hours of sleep has failed me BUT I started thinking about D&D and why I hate combat in it so much and I think it comes down to Nothing Interesting Happens.

Because the first combat encounter we had in the campaign thats on hiatus rn was actually Fun. Some goblins were attacking the town we were in and for my turn I decided to be tricksy and used mage hand to grab a fish to distract the goblins with thus make things more interesting then just Hitting/Shooting/Blasting them. But almost every other fight i can remember save.... 2? Its been Hit/Shoot/Blast. I get so bored and I dont want to stay at the table and by the time it gets to me I dont care anymore.

I was chatting with our DM a bit bc hes subbing in for a player of a different game soon and was showing me the setting specific races and subclasses and I realized I should respec my wizard to be Alchemy based, because it works well for her narratively and, as I was laying here thinking about it more, i think it would add a lot of the Interest I'm looking for in fights.

Not every fight is going to have an intricate map to navigate or manipulate, a lot of our fights are traveling on the road fights. So! If i start mixing potions and chucking them and make environmental hazards, thats interesting! Now we gotta think about where to move and put things and who is caught in what etc. Plus narratively having a Potion for Everything is really funny.

There is no feminist way to participate in toxic masculinity, and mocking people for having fragile masculinity is toxic masculinity, point blank period. Its fundamentally patriarchal.

The idea that "having fragile masculinity" is inherently a personality defect or moral failing is patriarchal. So much of this kind of bullshit is people taking fundamentally patriarchal ideas of manhood (for example, that men being vulnerable is a defect or moral failing) and defining it around slightly more feminist values.

Like, the only thing that is different from bog standard patriarchy here is the inclusion of "macho." But like, the idea that there are "fragile" men who fail to be "real men" with unshakeable firm masculinity, and they also secretly have small penises and are biologically less manly compared to "real men" whose real manhood can be located in their large penises... babe that's just toxic masculinity. The same "macho" shit you hate those men for, you yourself engage in, just a little to the left.

Fragile masculinity is not a moral failing, and it doesn't intrinsically make someone a worse person. And tbh I think talking about "fragile masculinity" like this is kind of disgustingly individualistic, and doesn't do much to encourage conversation about how patriarchy constructs manhood and masculinity as tools of control and oppression (what some feminists might call misandry).

I did not work at an open intake shelter. I worked at a very well funded limited-intake shelter.

But i am a huge supporter of open intake shelters and their staff. They do extremely vital and often heartbreaking work while getting shit on by lots of people. I will defend them and what they do to my dog breath.

I don't know often animals have to be euthanized for space. It's going to vary based on time of year, shelter size, funding, foster programs, etc.

The numbers of frenchies and doodles entering the shelters is definitely starting to increase, so all these indiscriminate breeders going for the next greatest trend are actively contributing to that happening though.

Quick reminders while we are on the subject:

They provide an evaluation and medical care to every animal.

They're often where no-kills get their animals to start with! This helps with overcrowding.

They're often where no-kills take animals that need euthanization.

They take animals from the public, which no-kills frequently do not.

They prevent immense suffering because they will euthanize animals that are dying or pose a risk to humans.

Overcrowding drives euthanasia of adoptable animals. If you are in the US, spay/neuter voucher programs are the single most successful and cost-effective intervention for overcrowding. If you want to keep animals out of open-intake shelters, look up and support those programs.

Support and speak up in defense of open-intake shelters and their workers!
