my absolute favorite thing about pliny the elder is the sheer comedic effect that results from an ancient roman who thought that there were only like 170 fish in the sea claiming that the romans knew everything about the world around them. like in one paragraph he’ll say something like ‘isn’t it astounding how much we know about the world!’ and in the next breath he’ll by like ‘and now here is a list of animals that have no blood in their body during certain times of the year’ and it never fails to kill me every time
i was talking to one of my coworkers about my trip and she asked me where i was going and i said austria and she looked at me all confused and then she said “like…austria-hungary?” and i wasn’t quite sure how to break it to her

February came with crisp mornings and bitter nights.
Kalemegdan fortress, Belgrade
The Golubats Fortress, Serbia 🏰
Besides looking like the Winterfell castle, Golubats also has a very unique name. Derived from the Serbian word “golub” meaning “dove”, the Golubats fortress is said to have “towers like doves, aiming for the skies”.
The sign of high quality is the fact the book was banned by the government. Trash literature NEVER EVER had any troubles with the law.
FARENHEIT 451 IS ON THE BANNED BOOKS LIST??? IT’S LITERALLY ABOUT THE SOCIETAL DANGERS OF BANNING/OUTLAWING/BURNING BOOKS ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME
That’s the reason it’s on the bloody list.
BECAUSE IT’S ABOUT HOW BANNING AND BURNING BOOKS IS WRONG.
The Great Gatsby: “rich people can get away with a lot of shit”
America: “hmmmm 🤔 can’t let people know that”
Invisible Man is fucking amazing as well!
BURY MY HEART AT WOUNDED KNEE NEEDS TO BE READ BY EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THE UNITED STATES

I return gifting this post. Skål.
When many people think about the Middle Ages they see it as a time when people were tortured by a wide collection of diabolical instruments. Whether it is the Pear of Anguish or the Iron Maiden, these torture devices are portrayed as medieval. The reality, however, is that many of these devices never existed in the Middle Ages.
I’m crying this is so good, quality content right here
