#3 - Planning a lonely Eid

My parents are going to be abroad for Eid. So are my sisters and brothers. Basically everyone’s gone to the homeland to spend Eid together. But me and my stupid job had to ruin the family plans. I’ll be here, having the loneliest Eid in the history of Eids. What am I going to do that day? Pray, work, sleep. Hoping next year will be beter inshAllah.

Or I could always quit my job and get outta here. But that might be a little extreme.

#2 - Staying friends with the one that got married

As I aged into my twenties, I noticed something happening to my social circle. It was like my girls naturally divided into two groups:

- Those that get married.

- Those that don’t.

And I often feel like you can’t stay friends if one person has already been on the other side for too long.

I had this really good friend, a great girl, the super funny type of girl that nails sarcasm on a whole other level. The girl that would dye her hair in a bright red color when she felt like it and make the boys turn their heads from miles away. She and I would have dinner, laugh for hours about the crazy guys that stalked her and then come home and call to discuss it some more.

And then she got married and everything changed.

She married a decent guy, at least I think he is. To me, he seemed boring, but I didn’t have to live with him so who was I to judge? Then her personality changed. She got boring too. She took a boring job near the place he and his family live, in a boring town, in a boring house with a boring car in front of it. I barely saw her anymore, but I understood that once she was married, her priorities changed. Hanging with the girls was no longer something she did. And when we had dinner, it wasn’t the same anymore. There were no more stories, she had nothing to tell. And I couldn’t share anything, because everything felt so unimportant compared to her married, grown-up life.

And then we stopped talking. I still like her pictures on Instagram. She got a beautiful baby boy, and I’m so happy for her. But we just ran out of things to talk about.

I don’t know if the unmarried ones can stay friends with the married folks. I just don’t have married girls I talk to anymore. Or are they all just talking to each other and leaving me behind?

#1 - I know it’s hot, now get outta here.

This day was already too long and if one more person asks if I’m hot, I’m gonna go crazy. Every hijabi knows this struggle during a high-temperature Summer. You walk past a café, you see people sitting on that sunny terrace, and their looks. “Oh look at that poor covered girl, we can barely see her skin, she must be melting under all those layers...” Well, OBVIOUSLY I AM. But you looking at me and giving me the sad eyes or the judgy eyes, isn’t helping. On the contrary, it makes me angry which isn’t good to cool off either. And non-Muslim saying these kind of things is stupid, but you know what’s worse? Muslim guys judging you for what you are not covering! They’ll be like: “Ok so I can kinda see a part of your upper-low ankle, so why? It’s hot so God doesn’t exist anymore?!” Bro, who are you? Mind your own hijab and leave me the fuck alone.

Hello, people of Tumblr. I hope you like what I have to say.

Or maybe you don’t have to. I’m gonna do it anyway. Because it’s too much to keep inside and I have no time to actually write it all down. I got a lot on my plate, so many things to say. But why don’t I introduce myself first?

I’m a 20-something hijabi, living the Big City Life. No need to know my exact age and place I live I think, maybe I’ll share it later. What’s important about me is that:

- I’m a Muslim woman with Arab roots, living in a Western country.

- I have a job. A stressful one, but it pays the bills so I can’t complain, right? (I’m lying, I complain all the time, sorry)

- I fall in love A LOT. It’s one of my biggest weaknesses, every time a guy just looks at me with that 😏 look, I’m planning a wedding.

- I don’t have a lot of friends, just a couple of really close ones. But I’ll tell you about them later too.

- I have a lot of different identities to deal with, so at times I feel like superwoman. Or like a fraud. Either way, it comes with challenges.

I’ll write every day. Because I just need to. If nobody reads my stories, that’s fine too. Just need to get it all of my chest I guess. There’s so much we should talk about and we never do because it’s too personal/awkward/taboo/whatever. I’m gonna share everything, uncensored. So I hope you’ll enjoy what’s coming. I know I will.
