I think I know how to marry the two main ideas behind Ralsei's drink scene in chapter 5, that Blue and Pink are both the colors of the Trans Flag, and the colors of Kris' Dark World sprite.
Kris is non-binary, but they still present themselves in several ways typically associated with specific genders with their dark world outfits. Susie even makes the comment to Kris: "... It is kinda cool. You can wear anything." Ralsei also makes a comment on this concept during the climbing wall dress scene: "I suppose the only difference is how you present yourself..."
So, I think the colors match both things because Ralsei's desire to try new gender presentations is directly inspired (and/or encouraged) by Kris. He's looking at the drink for so long because he wants what Kris has.
Pinches my nose. Okay. I'll go ahead and say it.
We don't have a definitive gender for Ralsei. We just don't. I love transfem ralsei. I love bigender ralsei. I love nonbinary ralsei. I am also seeing a concerning amount of transfem ralsei lovers bashing on bigender and nonbinary Ralsei lovers. The assumption seems to be that anyone who isn't a stark believer in transfem Ralsei is transmisogynistic.
Those people are definitely out there. However, hello, I am a bigender person. I am currently headcanoning Ralsei as bigender because that matters to me. There are various people headcanoning Ralsei as nonbinary because it matters to them. We are free to do that because we don't have a definitive gender for Ralsei. We know they currently identify with he/him but we all have VERY due reason to believe that will change by the end of the game. All we really know is they seem to be very attracted to feminine expression but aren't comfortable with taking it yet. That is an experience common for transfems; it is not unique to transfems.
I am not headcanoning Ralsei as bigender as a copout or because I don't think they could be transfem. I headcanon them as bigender because it's a possibility, and I really would love to have rep of my own. Don't lump me in with the fucking bigots. The only rep that ANY of us have right now is the hints to Ralsei's gender dysphoria. Love them for the character they are, headcanon whatever you want
Let people have their fun and then when the ACTUAL bigots roll in with their bullshit, we jump them! Because to them, guess what? A bigender person, a transfem, and a nonbinary person are all one lonnnng slur
grossed is such a weird way to describe how much a movie makes. how much did this movie yucky
I have a theory about the Shadow Mantle/Crystals and what Seam is going to make with them. It's very speculative, but fuck it, why not.
I've seen a couple people pose an idea that this item Seam forges would allow Ralsei to come to the Light World. And that would be awesome! But that got me thinking, wouldn't something like that be a big deal for the residents of Castle Town? Assuming that this item allows ANY darkner to survive in the Light World, who else might take major notice to this item?
First to come to mind was Spamton, who talked about reaching "Heaven" using Kris' soul, which I believe was heavily implying this exact thing, going to the Light World. So my next list of people to check would be the other secret bosses. And boy, that gets interesting.
Seam confirms the nature of Shadow Crystals to be shards of broken dreams, more or less. And that makes sense, because their holders have broken dreams associated with them, right? Spamton used to be a big shot, Gerson used to be alive, Jevil has lost all his old friends, Mad Mew Mew hasn't had a chance to live as her true self, and the Knight being associated with fear and sadness more or less makes sense that they'd be made of the stuff.
Except all of that is a bit off.
So, what if their broken dreams are something else, within the context of the crystals? Crystals...that could take them to the Light World...
Mad Mew Mew sure is getting the chance to live as herself now that she has an able darkner body instead of just a doll, and is likely to come to Castle Town. But she can't leave. No one she knows will ever see her like this. This hasn't come up in game yet because she hasn't used the crystal.
Gerson is back, but his son, students, church members, and everyone else won't get to see or talk to him, even though he is alive and old again! This again didn't come up in game because he also refused to use the Shadow Crystal.
But Spamton and Jevil did.
Spamton going to the Light World, where no one from his past would be, would be his ultimate second chance. That means he'd be far away from both the people that rejected him, and maybe even the army of Image_Friends who may or may not be hunting him. Using the crystal gave him proof somehow that a darkner could leave the dark world, although he specifically focused on using Kris as his vessel to do so.
Jevil is a little harder to parse on this issue, but one of his opening lines comments how he's lonely in his little freedom, and he just wished to play a game, the "game" he plays with our party. And he also says: "Then after you, I can play with everyone else too." Jevil could simply be referring to the people in his dark world again, but considering his knowledge of some future events, namely the mention of Queen and his prophesy of Hell's Roar, it might be more reasonable to assume he's not referring just to them. We also don't necessarily have him with us after the fight, if you pacified him, but considering it makes him so tired he goes to sleep for 100 years, he might not have a say in the matter. And if you defeat him with fighting, he SPECIFICALLY requests to come with you. Thirdly, he has a personal connection to Seam, who is the one forging the item from the crystals and the mantle, so it's possible Jevil knows what item is possible if the party pursues it; he would just be biding his time until the right moment to take it.
Finally, there's the Knight. There's a theory going around that the Knight is not a specific person, but the manifestation of every person's dream about Dess that was broken after her disappearance. And considering the crystal is obtained from breaking off a piece of the sword itself, rather than it being gifted to you, this would fit. The people in hometown want Dess to return to them, in the Light World of course, so this too would fit the dreams of the other 4 crystal holders. Although, this combination makes this reasoning heavy speculation, as I mentioned at the start.
So, if the 5 shadow crystal bosses really are all related to the same hope of going to the Light World, then an item that manifests those desires makes a lot of sense. And any secret boss who is present in Castle Town would be very interested in getting their hands on that item as soon as it was forged. I think if you try to give such an item to Ralsei, these bosses aren't going to let you do that if they have any say in the matter.
And that's when we're going to have to fight all 3 of them at once :) The ultimate ass-kicking from Jevil, Spamton, and Mad Mew Mew.
Ok this is just "that would be cool" territory. But I do like the idea of fighting for the right to take Ralsei to the Light World. It would be an opportunity for him to feel special and loved by his friends again in contrast to how he thinks about himself. Or, it could be the opportunity for the player to choose someone else if they wanted? I'm sure if we were given such a choice, everyone would be constantly talking about their preferred pick.
I've been thinking about the post-chapter 5 discourse around Susie's relationship with the dark world - where the (more or less) obvious theme prediction is that centering her life around escapism so much will be very unhealthy for her - and I have an alternative theory on this idea now.
My theory is that actually, toby fox is trying to frame this situation as a GOOD thing.
It's very easy to look at her literally living in the dark world and be afraid that it's a trap or is going to backfire, but today this situation reminded me of real-life situations that are analogous to hers: online fandoms*.
*(this theory might also work for other types of communities but stick with me)
There are so many stories of people who talk about their fandom being their lifeline, about making friends, having something giving their life meaning and happiness, improving them as people, and sometimes literally saving their life. As soon as Susie entered the dark world, she was given the chance to make friends and have something to really make her happy for once, and she has been improving as a person (and a lot of it was simply just giving her a proper chance)! Her literally living there seems like an analogy to how these people cling to their fandoms as their lifeline, pouring every spare moment they have into it, and it gets them to a BETTER place as a result, despite the fears of going too far; it seems quite often, that this simply doesn't end up being the case.
There's also further similarities between these dark worlds and online spaces. There are so many people out there in the world that we never get to see, never would get to talk to or even fathom that they exist, other than a vague feeling of the world being a big place with a lot of people in it. But when we enter an online community, those people suddenly come to life for us. We all get a name and an avatar, giving us form, and share an experience together that we enjoy, our dark worlds. Often some of those communities we close for good, but sometimes we keep some of the friends we made while still in them...our recruits? :) And then we find new fandoms and start the whole thing over again, just like Kris opening new dark worlds that hold new adventures and new friends. Toby hard-pushing the idea that the Darkners are real people and not just "objects" really makes a lot of sense in this context too. To some people, the internet is just a screen, but we know we are talking to real people, even if it looks a little different.
Susie living in the school dark world is giving her a home where she had none, friends when she struggled with making any, and a chance to be the better person a part of her already wanted to be, even when no one else in her "real" life saw her as anything worthwhile. Sure, she still has another life she has to maintain, and dark world food doesn't actually keep you full, but she has OTHER needs that ARE being met. And I'm sure many of us can relate.
While I was writing this out, I realized that this might have some big implications about Ralsei as well, so this is a separate post for that.
Ralsei seems to embody all of the criticisms that often get thrown at people who spend a lot of time in online spaces (to varying degrees of validity). A lot of his self esteem and views on other darkners reflect the criticism that people online aren't your real friends, like "Darkners in the light world are just objects" and a few other things I couldn't remember enough to paraphrase here. Also, his insistence on Susie (and Kris) finishing homework being a priority over the dark world, and how opening all these new dark fountains is "very very bad" is very similar to the criticism that we surely have better things to do than waste time on the internet.
There's probably more I can't remember right now. But maybe this could be a clue as to Ralsei's darkner identity (the "impossibility"). Like, what if this was someone who never thought they'd get into online spaces but found themselves there anyway? What if those fears he expresses are the boundaries such a person would set for themselves because they don't want to get too sucked in to their new pastime? What if the scene with the dress is them finally changing their username and pfp to something other than their name and a selfie lol (yes this scene can also be trans these things can be multiple things at once)
What if they're the prince alone in deepest dark, because they didn't think they'd fit in anywhere, so they didn't even try until a couple friends found them?
Maybe that's too easy. But it's interesting.

my mother, right after giving birth: and now... you owe me one. you will spend the rest of your life paying it back. stop crying its annoying me.
I know this is just for humor, but I wanted to share what finally got me to stop feeling obligated to my parents.
I asked myself: Do my pets owe me anything?
My answer was an immediate and emphatic “no.” Because I chose to take on the responsibility of their care. They didn’t choose this. They didn’t ask to be adopted. Therefore I owe them.
So it’s my responsibility to give them the best life I possibly can. To educate myself on their care and give them the best care I know to provide.
It’s my responsibility to learn how they communicate needs, boundaries, fears, and wants. It’s my responsibility to learn their signals.
It’s my responsibility to let them go peacefully at the end of their lives, rather than try to keep them alive in a suffering state just because I don’t want to say goodbye.
I can hope that they’ll love me, and give me affection, and want to be around me, but if they don’t? If they’re angry or standoffish or reactive, if they’re not receptive to my affections—that’s okay. They don’t owe me anything. They’re still a responsibility that I chose, and I’m not going to try to make them love me.
Why is it any different for me, as a child of my parents? I didn’t ask to be born. I didn’t ask them to go through with the pregnancy and birth. They chose that.
And when my parents chose to reproduce, they took on a duty of care no less than what I have with my pets.
It was not just humor, it was to display precisely how stupid their behaviour is! And thank you for this nuanced and well thought-out comment, I love it.
