[ your pain in all my veins ]
part 34
soulmate au, where you feel the pain of your soulmate
For Tony Stark, this morning begins so well that at first it is even difficult for him to believe it. In truth, Tony has lost this calm that every new day should bring. He has already forgotten what it feels like. Therefore, this morning he is experiencing an extraordinary inspiration, drinking his usual portion of invigorating coffee. He leads a spontaneous dialogue with Pepper and enjoys pacification.
Tony looks at his bride, but his thoughts are far away, deeply buried in another person who seemed lost, but still there. Tony cannot say that he stopped trying to find Stephen, but his efforts are so vain that he simply lost all desire for it. It is for this reason that it is easier for him to think of Pepper than of Stephen.
Tony Stark realizes that be with Pepper Potts, is one of the most correct things he has done in his life. He loves her very much. He wants a family with her. He convinces himself of this, remembering that this pain and this feeling of sadness, that vibrating in his connection with a soulmate, is not at all important.
He gets used to not noticing these influxes of feelings, collects all the seeds of happiness from Pepper and really believes that he deserves all of this, because, no matter how hard he tries, he cannot find Stephen, so all these feelings are simply unnecessary and empty.
Maybe, if Tony known for sure what awaits him, he would decide not to go on this damn jog in Central Park, but he doesn’t know and therefore he starts a conversation with Pepper about children, even if he knew in advance what he will hear in response. Her point of view does not change, it always means the same thing, but Tony is already accustomed and does not hear her reproaches. He turns it into ridiculous jokes, and again making it clear to her that she cannot change his lifestyle. In response, he also receives the usual veiled refusal, and they seem not to notice that they hardly finding a compromise.
The taste of her hygienic lipstick on his lips is sugary, but pleasant. Tony would not even refuse to try it again, but he does not have time - the bright golden sparks dazzle his eyes, forming into a huge circle from which his soulmate steps towards them.
“Tony Stark. I’m Doctor Stephen Strange. I need you to come with me.”
A wild cold rushes through Tony’s body, and it seems like he was back in Siberia, lying on a cold, dank stone floor. The sensation of light waves of heat, as then, rolls along the tips of his fingers, and Tony thinks his connection with Stephen is like a sheaf of these golden sparks. When Tony looks at the sorcerer, everything inside him is trembles, and Stark suppresses this feeling in himself. The damn Stephen Strange, whom Tony had been looking for so long and who himself had easily found Tony. Stephen Strange, who now talk some sort of nonsense about saving the world.
Tony quickly looks back at Pepper, suddenly realizing that he does not want her to know how close this person is to him. And that is why he turns Stephen down with light phrases, while eagerly glances at him. And for some reason, he does not doubt that Pepper already knows everything: that she guessed because she was never stupid, and that she grabbed his shoulder with her fingers, not only because she understands that this is their future, which should to be saved again by her fiancé, but also by the fact that the initials of the name of this sorcerer are clearly similar to the initials on Tony’s wrist.
And then Bruce appears from this bright portal, and it seems that everything is falling apart with small stones. He looks almost dead, and Tony feels his heart break in his chest, his thoughts jump over each other as he nods at Stephen and strokes Bruce on the back.
Tony is not sure that Pepper says anything before he enters the portal. He simply does not remember what was happening at that moment, because everything seemed to have covered with fog. He felt only a lump approaching his throat. The morning began so well, but now it was going to hell.
Tony looks at Stephen out of the corner of his eye and suddenly realizes that if it were not for the impending end of the world, they would never have met. They would have remained strangers.
