James being jealous of Barty and Regulus' friendship (and former relationship) just makes so much sense.

He knows he can never beat what they had with each other. Sure, he's stable, he loves Regulus, he's a good boyfriend but he's not Barty. He couldn't imagine treating Regulus the way Barty had, screaming matches, sex instead of talking, Barty was Regulus' first everything.

And I think, James' insecurity actually leads him into becoming Barty a little, completely unintentionally, he's definitely more possessive, more prone to being pissed off, to claim Regulus in front of ppl. He doesn't even notice Regulus becoming more invested in James than he ever was before.
