hellooo i need some childhood best friends james & marlene headcanons pls 😭

THIS I CAN DO YAY modernish context i guess?? it's pretty ambigous

they grow up like relatively close to each other and i think their parents know each other to begin with (marlene with a nice relationship with her parents context obviously)

it's like. book style childhood friends. running in and out of each other's gardens and houses with scraped knees and handfuls of toy cars and rocks and broken bits of chalk

drawing on the pavement and outlining each other in red and white like those MISSING BODY outlines

and it doesn't really stop

like there's never a point where they drift apart, even if things change sometimes

they're six years old and play fighting with sticks, grass stained knees and floppy hats

then they're eight years old and determined to start a band with monty's old acoustic guitar and a couple marracas. they never get too far, but there are some videos of them singing ABBA on a camera somewhere

then they turn ten and marlene is teaching james how to double bounce on the trampoline

and then they're thirteen sitting on the same bit of grass in james's front garden that they always have and marlene is saying she thinks she likes girls instead of boys, maybe. james says he thinks he might like boys as well as girls

two summers later he helps her bleach her hair for the first time in the bathroom sink and she pierces his ears for him

none of it matters

i don't think it ever changed, is what i'm saying?? they never out grew oneanother and they never drifted apart

effie teaches marlene how to ride a bike. marlene's mum teaches james how to tie a necktie.

marlene teaches james how to change the oil on a car and james teaches her how to cook

they have toothbrushes at eachother's houses and shared shirts that marlene keeps cutting the fucking arms off. they were workout buddies when marlene went through a gym phase

when school finishes they go on a gap year together!! they go to greece, where marlene refuses to put on suncream and gets burnt to hell and back, and greece, where james almost breaks a marble carving. all the way to australia, at one point, where james falls off a surf board and gets mistaken by marlene's grandparents for her boyfriend

the best friends ever !!
