Summary: Dean’s died and come back he can’t even remember how many times, but he’s never felt alive like this.
They got Cas back three months ago today, and Dean wakes up the same way as usual: tangled in at least two of Cas’ limbs and his own fear that this is all a dream. Also as usual, Cas is still asleep, so Dean gently disentangles himself, piles the blankets up around Cas like he’s a nesting bird, and groggily heads to the bathroom. Dean’s lower back pain will have to be proof enough that he’s conscious.
Sam is out running, the masochist, and it’s quiet in the bunker this early. It’s later than Dean usually sleeps, but still barely 7, so he puts on his robe and shuffles to the kitchen to start a pot of coffee. He uses the fancy stuff Sam gets when he goes out of town for his health nut groceries. Dean made fun of him for it, but then Cas lit up like a firework the first time he tried it, so now it’s the only kind they buy. It’s not just molecules anymore because Cas is human now, again; it was the only way they could get him out of the Empty, but he says he doesn’t mind. Actually, he said he was joyful, that to go through human life with Dean was all he could’ve hoped for, plus a bunch of other terrifyingly romantic things that Dean definitely doesn’t deserve and still can’t fully process, so that conversation ended with Dean manfully not-crying, Cas apologizing, and both of them clinging to each other like life rafts. It’s a work in progress.

So, Dean got the job.
He likes the work. Likes being one of the guys who actually drives a stickshift on the regular, ‘cause everyone else who works at the shop is about twenty, meaning they’re all kids with automatics saving up for Teslas. Likes working with his hands and knowing what he’s doing.
As always, Amy just says, “Uh huh,” once he starts in on his rant, says, “You gonna stop jerkin’ yourself off anytime soon, old man?”
“Shut up,” Dean says, without any bite to it ‘cause he likes Amy. He crawls back under the crappy Ford some asshole totaled three days ago and works.
When he comes out from under the car, Amy’s got some classic tunes on the radio. She says it’s for his benefit but Dean knows she’s a Zepp fan as much as he is. A line from Bitter Creek — you know there ain’t no cause to weep at Bitter Creek — hits Dean right in the chest, ‘cause it makes him think of Cas.
He thinks of him smiling to this song. He remembers playing it for him, one of Dad’s tapes, the two of them idling out near the Colorado border just for the hell of it. Wide open country out there, miles and miles and miles of flat land, and Cas sitting on the roof of the car, the tallest thing in sight.
Dean had just looked at him. Sitting right there in the dying sunlight. He’d just looked at him, Christ, feeling so goddamn lonely because Dean’s never been good at keeping people around and Cas was the worst of the whole goddamn bunch. But Cas had been smiling. We’re gonna hit the road one last time, sang Don Henley, and Cas had smiled.

Dean doesn’t mention his husband a lot. Mostly, he slips out a few words here and there when something seems to remind him of Cas. In the months following that fateful sushi-and-hot-dog lunch, she learns that he had bright blue eyes (following a job replacing a Ford’s high-beams with LED ones that could burn your eyes out), loved honey (after Amy talked about taking Nat to the farmer’s market), and dressed like an accountant (after a Men’s Warehouse opened up across the street from the garage).
All in all, not even enough to make a Guess Who? profile, but more than Dean had said before.
Amy’s manning the front desk when Dean gets in that morning, too focused on filling out a work order to notice him at first. She tosses out a “G’morning, Dean,” eyes on the computer in front of her. When she hears his locker open but doesn’t get a cheeky “Morning, Ames,” in return, she looks over, eyes meeting hollow ones, like Dean hasn’t slept in a few days. That’s not even the worst of it: rather than a leather jacket or thick flannel, he’s shoved himself into a musty trench coat, the lapels hanging loosely around his neck.
“Dean?” She asks, turning fully to him. “Are you okay?”
He swallows, shakes a little. “I – um, I need to take some time off,” he says, hands fisted by his side.

“Cause it sure as shit wasn’t Sam, Sam’s whole deal is he likes to buy me vegetables cause he thinks one day I’m magically gonna eat them.”
“Oh.” Cas looks vaguely disappointed. Dean isn’t sure why and is about to ask when he looks back down at his book. “Well. Plants like it when you sing to them.”
“Cas, I ain’t singing to greenery.”
The thing is, Dean does water it, though. He’s still not singing to it- you’ve gotta draw the line somewhere- but he follows Cas’s schedule, cause, well, it was a gift from Cas. Cas rarely gives gifts, although he seems endeared by the concept.

Dean smiled as he entered the bunker’s library to hear the familiar sounds of Cas knitting, the steady rhythmic soundtrack to every single morning. In his hands he held a pair of mugs, and the scent of coffee curled up into the air, exotifying the musty scent of old books and dust-thick shelves. Dean had splashed out last time he went to the store, and bought a special Colombian blend.
Dean, Castiel, and Sam have lived happily in the bunker together for a while, when they happen upon an old abandoned house. It doesn't look promising at first, but with some love and hard work - and some paint fights, from Dean and Cas - it starts to look like somewhere they could stay: a permanent home, with light through the windows and herbs in the kitchen.
