It's Guy Fawkes Night! In Britain, fireworks are lit, bonfires are burned and potatoes are consumed for a night of celebration on the 5th of November.

Originally, the holiday came about to celebrate the failure of a gunpowder plot in 1605 when Catholics failed to blow up Parliament, but this meaning has pretty much been lost. Traditionally an effigy of Guy Fawkes (a participant of the plot) would be burned on a bonfire, but people have taken to burning effigies of politicians and various hate-figures.
