Saw several people angrily responding to this one & all I can say is she’s 100% right
The most basic, intractable fact about mental illnesses is that you simply cannot willpower your way out of them. The only exceptions to this rule are the ones I have, which continue to disable me due to lack of determination and other grave personal flaws
tl;dr: all "algorithmically" pushed stuff on a newsfeed is mostly ads. nothing that's really surprising form this vulture article, but it is dismal and makes me grateful for one website where you only see things from people you follow WITHOUT horrible short-form video content
What if every viral song, movie, meme, influencer, and celebrity drama in recent memory was the result of a stealth marketing campaign?

(some guy on the internet voice) it's so unrealistic and forced when women win fights against men in stories. of course, when a young boy defeats a huge man I'm cheering and screaming because it is so badass, and when a frail old man defeats a cocky young warrior I feel nothing but satisfaction. I love these power fantasies about easily dispatching people who underestimate you, a thing I desire despite the fact that I will likely never have the skill to achieve it in real life, but I'm pretty sure women don't have that same desire, and even if they do, they shouldn't get to see it in media. because it's so unrealistic, you see. I mean I'm smart enough to know I can't take down a big man in a fight but the women, you know, they'll get ideas. I could probably do it if I trained hard enough, but the women??? for some reason I can't see it happening, and who can say why that is.
After 13 years of this, it's still funny to me that detailing a full mental breakdown on tumblr is standard fare, but posting a nice selfie is a fraught decision.
this is the correct way around and every other social media site is wrong

i don't care what anyone says i love it when a historical novel slides in a historical figure all casual. every single time i am pointing yelling screaming cheering like YOU!!!!! I KNOW YOU!!!!!! FROM HISTORY
book: they ordered their drinks at ye olde tavern and there was a guy there. and he said sup i'm william but you can call me will...... shakespeare......
me: omg it's william. of shakespeare fame
book: he was scribbling with his quill pen mumbling to himself "hmm what if there was a play.... but it was WITHIN the play..."
me: omg hamlet.........................
pythagoras making a cameo in a novel about vampires in ancient greece or whatever: oh didn't see you there...... i was busy thinking about my theorem #mytheorem
me: no way....... just like when he said that in real life.......
girlhood this girlhood that. woman you are 26
I got a message about how this is supposedly mean. I am holding your hand when I say that refusing womanhood and clinging onto girlhood will not save you from the realities of adulthood. I am not saying you are not young. 26 is incredibly young. you are free to love the concepts and media associated with girlhood but there is much to love about womanhood that you are not seeing. there is something to be said for being free of the shackles of girlhood and childhood. you are an autonomous being. you have power over your life and the paths you will take. it is easier to see the paths when you start taking yourself seriously instead of waiting for others to do so. no one is saying you have to be serious. womanhood is joy too. a different shade of yellow
#search obsessively for pockets of autonomy in life and seize them!
Hormone hype is out of control.
Claiming that the menstrual cycle is mystical and powerful might sound feminist. But teaching women that they should naturally feel erratic at virtually every point in their cycle could lead women to downplay—and miss out on treatment for—actual mood or hormonal disorders. The attitude also has social consequences. Denigrating hormonal birth control when access to abortion is restricted could leave more women with unwanted pregnancies; it dovetails with some pronatalists’ argument that women should dedicate themselves to motherhood and the conservative push for women to embrace traditional gender roles. [...] Urging women to “balance” their hormones “naturally” perpetuates an insidious, age-old idea that women are especially close to nature and God. “There’s a long tradition of linking women to nature, men to culture,” Helen King, a historian and the author of Immaculate Forms, told me in an email. “In Ancient Greek medicine, women’s flesh was seen as more absorbent, as resembling a fleece, whereas men’s flesh was like a fabric garment. Women were closer to the natural product, the raw materials, men were superior as the finished product.”
I think one of the funniest abortion stances I've heard was from my parents neighbor. He's a like, hard-core libertarian viking larper guy who is very tall and very fat and very bald.
He believes a fetus is human with a soul, but also its "basically attacking the woman's body" so if she wants to get rid of it, that's "basically self-defense". He compared it to shooting a home invader. So he supports abortion not as healthcare, but as killing a baby in self-defense
