one of my favorite things about history is how interconnected it all is, how when you zoom out from the perspective of hindsight the butterfly effect becomes clear. it’s honestly gorgeous
I think it’s funny how Mormon God was like “look polygamy is super important and I am telling you my followers to practice it even in the face of persecution” and then 40 years later Congress said Utah wouldn’t be given statehood as long as the LDS practiced polygamy and Mormon God was like “Ok tell everyone I changed my mind”
I just really like the idea that Mormon God like, basically caved into pressure from the federal government
I love this take, lol. Fun fact this is my focus for my B.S. History degree. The “state” of Deseret (Utah before it was Utah) actually thought about to petitioning for statehood under popular sovereignty, which would allow polygamy. Long story short, the president James Buchanan sent a 1/4 of the US standing Army to Utah to put down the “white-Indians” (aka Mormons). This war was a victory for the LDS church, however, it also caused the Mountain Meadows Massacre so not a true victory. The reason why the Latter-day Saints stopped practicing polygamy was (at least my thesis argument) was due to race! The church was viewed as non-white for many reasons including polygamy. To be seen as more white the Latter-Day Saints went through a rebrand, taking away their traditional beliefs in their religion.
